Secure Reconfigurable Computing Paradigms For The Next Generation Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning Applications, Brooks Olney
Secure Reconfigurable Computing Paradigms For The Next Generation Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning Applications, Brooks Olney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been popular tools for data analysis at the edge, particularly through complex deep and convolutional neural networks (DNNs/CNNs), which can learn to parameterize a function given a labeled dataset. Indeed, these technologies have enabled significant progress across a wide range of fields and are becoming ubiquitous. However, training the best model for an application and subsequently using them to evaluate data in real-time requires an immense amount of computational power. Typically, ``smart" sensors at the edge rely on the cloud to accelerate this computation due to power and compute …

Training Parents Via Telehealth To Teach Manding To Children With Asd To Replace Problem Behavior, Sukarah Almulhim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study assessed the effectiveness of using Behavioral Skills Training (BST) for parent training to implement functional behavior training and video modeling via a telehealth platform designed to increase manding abilities and to decrease problem behaviors with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). With eight participants, this study used a multiple-baseline design across subjects (four parents and four children with ASD). The research was divided into three phases: parent training, baseline, and intervention. BST was administered remotely from the United States through synchronous video conferencing with families in different countries in the Middle East. All parents were able to learn …
Turmoil In The Workforce: Introduction Of The Nomadic Employee, Catrina Hopkins
Turmoil In The Workforce: Introduction Of The Nomadic Employee, Catrina Hopkins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study is designed to define a “nomadic employee,” a figure who has emerged in the ever-changing labor force, and to define what drives these workers to move between companies within a short period of time (generally within a 12-month period). These nomadic employees are driving higher turnover rates and causing rising onboarding costs. Relationships between employees and their employers have changed drastically in recent decades. Business concepts have evolved, and, thus, so have employee motivations. With the introduction of the millennial generation into the workforce and the emergence of the technology revolution, workforces have transformed, again establishing the …
Attention-Grabbing Tactics On Social Media, Arjun Kadian
Attention-Grabbing Tactics On Social Media, Arjun Kadian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
News posts are popular among social media users. Since news reading is critical for both social media platforms and news providers, the use of attention-grabbing tactics, such as hyperbole and expressed emotional arousal, is commonplace to increase news readership. However, there is scant empirical evidence to explain the impact of attention-grabbing tactics on social media users’ reading intentions and behavior in social media. Therefore, I first explore how and why the use of hyperbolic statements in news headlines influences users’ interest and intention to read the news. Drawing on expectation violation theory, I propose competing hypotheses. I conducted three experiments …
Identifying Contributors To Disproportionality: The Influence Of Perception On Student Social, Emotional, And Academic Behavior Ratings, Chelsea Salvatore
Identifying Contributors To Disproportionality: The Influence Of Perception On Student Social, Emotional, And Academic Behavior Ratings, Chelsea Salvatore
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Successful implementation of the MTSS framework involves equitable assessment and decision-making. This calls for researchers to investigate the processes utilized to identify students for early behavioral support, such as multi-informant universal social-emotional behavioral screening. The current study aimed to investigate this by first examining the usability of the Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Subscale (SAEBRS) and the student self-report version (mySAEBRS) across Black and White students in grades seven through nine. After examining these tools for measurement invariance, the trifactor model was employed with race as a predictor variable to examine the mean difference of Black and White students’ scores …
Standing Her Ground: Legal Constraints On Women Who Have Been Victims Of Violence, Janae E. Thomas
Standing Her Ground: Legal Constraints On Women Who Have Been Victims Of Violence, Janae E. Thomas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Women who have been the victim of violence have always been at a disadvantage under the laws in the United States because these laws stem from a patriarchal, sexist, heteronormative, and racist ideology under which this country was founded. Self- defense laws have shown to be no different and serve as a constraint to women who attempt to protect themselves at the hands of an abuser. This dissertation focuses on women who have been the victim of violence at the hands of an abuser to show that the law is not doing an adequate job of protecting them. It accomplishes …
Intimate Conversations: A Mixed-Methods Study Of African American Father-Adolescent Sexual Risk Communication, Shanda A. Vereen
Intimate Conversations: A Mixed-Methods Study Of African American Father-Adolescent Sexual Risk Communication, Shanda A. Vereen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Approximately 50% of African American (AA) high school students are sexually active and a large proportion of sexually active AA students report engaging in sexual risk behaviors such as not using condoms at last intercourse. Consequently, AA adolescents in the United States experience outcomes of risky sexual behaviors at high rates. Evidence shows parents have an effect on shaping adolescent attitudes, values, and beliefs regarding sex through sexual risk communication (SRC). Although parent-adolescent SRC is associated with reductions in sexual risk behaviors among AA adolescents, research has primarily focused on mothers. While parents acknowledge that SRC is traditionally viewed …
Prepare For, Respond To, Recover, And Learn From Disasters: Using Data-Driven Methods To Model And Understand Disaster Resilience, Jinwen Xu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Community resilience reflects the ability of human communities to prepare for, respond to, recover, and learn from disastrous events. Community resilience carries different meanings in different phases of disaster management (i.e., preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation). With the emergence of new geospatial data sources, human activities now can be captured through social media, mobile signals, and nighttime illuminations, which makes it possible to describe the conditions among various communities before, during, and after disasters. Therefore, this dissertation explored the use of different types of geospatial data sources (social media, nighttime light remote sensing, land-use data, and census survey data) during …

Please Don’T Label Me: An Examination Of Black-Owned Labels And How A Positive Consumer Activism Movement May Have A Negative Outcome, Khalia C. Jenkins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Covid-19 crisis that began in 2020 brought to light many societal issues as people had time to sit and reflect. One of these issues is the systemic injustices against African Americans, which were highlighted after the death of George Floyd. This event re-ignited the Black Lives Matter movement amongst U.S. citizens of all races and within corporations. While some companies pledged to donate to various Black causes, others opted to empower Black businesses economically by supporting the Buy-Black Movement. One of the ways they are accomplishing this goal is by adding a Black-owned label to products and businesses. While …
Data-Driven Learning Algorithm Via Densely-Defined Multiplication Operators And Occupation Kernels., John Kyei
Data-Driven Learning Algorithm Via Densely-Defined Multiplication Operators And Occupation Kernels., John Kyei
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Consider a nonautonomous nonlinear evolution $\dot{x}=f(x,t,\mu)$, where the vector $x(t) \in \mathbb{R}^n$ represents the state of the dynamical system at time $t$, $\mu$ contains system parameters, and $f(\cdot)$ represents a dynamic constraint. In most practical applications, the nonlinear dynamic constraint $f$ is unknown analytically. The problem of approximating $f$ directly from data measurements generated by the system is a main goal of this manuscript. In the postulates of the Nonlinear Autoregressive (NAR) framework, we show that the problem of approximating $f$ can be studied through symbols of densely defined multiplication operators over a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS). In this …

Considerations For Curricular Reform In Undergraduate Chemistry: Cooperative Adoption Factors, Modeling Social Influence, And Focusing On Specific Populations, Jacob D. Mcalpin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will go through the details of three projects highlighting considerations for curricular reforms in undergraduate chemistry. Improving the teaching of chemistry is facilitated by considering the problem from multiple directions, namely, faculty and students. In addition to the multiple perspectives, this dissertation also seeks to bring new methodologies into the spotlight to improve the toolbox for other chemistry or discipline-based education researchers. Additionally, this dissertation has shown in several locations how focusing in on subgroups within populations can reveal findings that would not have been apparent from a global average of the population. The three project describes in …

Saudi Parents As Advocates For Their Young Children With Disabilities: Reflections On The Journey, Sadeem A. Alolayan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although special education advocates have played an essential role in obtaining rights for individuals with disabilities, there is still much unknown about their motivations, challenges, roles, and the meaning they made from their experiences. Research into Saudi parent advocates of children with disabilities and their complex daily life issues have seldom been investigated, with rare studies that focus solely on Saudi early intervention services needs and supports. This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of Saudi parents of children with developmental disabilities who are special education advocates in their communities. One of the goals of this study was to …
Karl Marx On Human Flourishing And Proletarian Ethics, Sam Badger
Karl Marx On Human Flourishing And Proletarian Ethics, Sam Badger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will show that Marx’s philosophy contains a notion of human “second nature” centered on the activity of labor with a corresponding class-centered theory of flourishing and emancipation. This notion shares important similarities with that of Aristotle but also differs in significant ways. Second nature for Marx is created and habituated through education and social labor. Moreover, human nature is molded into different forms as history progresses and modes and means of production change. In a class society everyone becomes is alienated from their nature in a way that inhibits their flourishing. This contrasts with an emancipated society, where …
Evaluating Foot-Drop Interventions For Multiple Sclerosis Using A Multimodal System, Laura Marie Byrnes-Blanco
Evaluating Foot-Drop Interventions For Multiple Sclerosis Using A Multimodal System, Laura Marie Byrnes-Blanco
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores how multimodal walking impacts quantitative and qualitative aspects of gait for persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) experiencing foot-drop. Foot-drop can dramatically impede mobility and clinicians routinely prescribe ankle-foot-orthosis (AFO) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices to alleviate its impacts on daily life. However, little is known about how these devices affect pwMS while traversing environments with real-world complexity. To explore this topic, an interventional, parallel assigned study was conducted. A realistic nature pathway containing changes in floor pitch, audiovisual stimulation, and during-trial tasks (for dual-tasking) was generated in an immersive virtual reality system called CAREN: Computer Assisted …

Relationship Between Demographic Characteristics And Internship Participation Of Senior Undergraduate International Students, Timothy W. Gjini
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The United States higher education institutions’ mission is to support students' academic success and career development goals by preparing them to become globally competent citizens and workforce-ready graduates. With student workforce preparation at the core of their mission, there is concern that colleges and universities are not adequately investing in international students’ engagement in career-preparation practices (e.g., internships). As such, this quantitative, secondary-data study explored the relationship between senior international students’ demographic characteristics, the institutional environment (type and classification), and their internship participation behavior. Key variables were identified from three complementary theoretical strands, including Astin’s Input-Environment-Output (I-E-O) Model (1988, 1993a, …

Transformative Psychedelic Experiences At Music Events: Using Subjective Experience To Explore Chemosocial Assemblages Of Culture, Gabrielle R. Lehigh
Transformative Psychedelic Experiences At Music Events: Using Subjective Experience To Explore Chemosocial Assemblages Of Culture, Gabrielle R. Lehigh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Clinical interest in psychedelic treatments in the United States started in the 1950s, but anti-drug policy and anti-social sentiments quickly thwarted future research. The last decade has renewed clinical interest in using psychedelics to treat a diversity of mental health ailments. While these studies provide essential protocols, treatments, and therapy models for patients, they are limited in understanding the role of the contextual elements that influence psychedelic experiences and outcomes. This project examines how people use psychedelic substances outside medical settings by studying transformative psychedelic experiences at music events. This inquiry into psychedelic use utilizes an integrated framework of chemoethnography …
A Human-In-The-Loop Robot Grasping System With Grasp Quality Refinement, Tian Tan
A Human-In-The-Loop Robot Grasping System With Grasp Quality Refinement, Tian Tan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation is to develop a grasping system for assistive robots that can help people with disabilities and the elderly to perform tasks of daily living. In developing this robot grasping system, we maximize its reliability, accuracy, and autonomy. High reliability and accuracy are required for robots to perform tasks around human users and to safely interact with objects that might be fragile or have contents that could spill. High autonomy is desired as users with disabilities are usually not dexterous enough to directly operate the robot. In this dissertation, a human-in-the-loop (HitL) robot grasping system is …
The Local Neurologies Of Substance Use Triggers, Breanne I. Casper
The Local Neurologies Of Substance Use Triggers, Breanne I. Casper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Substance use triggers are largely understood to be embedded in drug use contexts and to be a major precipitator of relapse. Yet, the relationship between triggers and future instances of drug use is not quite clear– particularly in understanding the nuances of when triggers are “triggering” and when they are not. Additionally, there is little ethnographic work that explores how individuals interact with triggers in contexts related to substance use, particularly during periods of active use. This project employs ethnographic and survey research methods to interrogate substance use triggers in the harm reduction context. In doing so, it answers the …
A Forward Genetic Screen Identifies Genes Involved In Gametocyte Development Of The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum., Jyotsna Chawla
A Forward Genetic Screen Identifies Genes Involved In Gametocyte Development Of The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum., Jyotsna Chawla
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Transmission of the deadly malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum from human to mosquito is achieved by specialized intraerythrocytic sexual forms called gametocytes. Circulating in the vertebrate host, relatively few intraerythrocytic gametocytes are picked up during a bloodmeal to continue sexual development in the mosquito vector. Human-to-vector transmission thus represents an infection bottleneck in the parasite's life cycle for therapeutic interventions to prevent malaria. Though the crucial regulatory mechanisms leading to gametocyte commitment have recently come to light, networks of genes that control sexual development remain to be elucidated. Here, we report a forward genetic approach to identify genes associated with gametocyte …
Why Science Can't Prevent Climate Change: Philosophical Approaches To Creating Societal Shifts, Charlotte Britt

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
We live in a society that is consumed with consuming. An inability to escape the urge to obtain more possessions is ever-increasing. Every aspect of our lives is surrounded by product placement with the goal of creating the false narrative that you are lacking something that will if obtained, add to the value of your life and bring you a step closer to becoming the person you long to be. This never-ending necessity to spend is matched with an excruciating pull to accumulate wealth in order to feed these desires. This commodification of our every move and existence is having …
How Some Arboreal Salamanders (Genus Aneides) Jump, Glide, And Generate Lift, Christian E. Brown
How Some Arboreal Salamanders (Genus Aneides) Jump, Glide, And Generate Lift, Christian E. Brown
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The jumping and subsequent aerial behaviors of arboreal lungless salamanders (genus Aneides) had never been investigated or described. The aims of this research were to (1) compare jumping performance within the family Plethodontidae with a special focus on arboreal species from genus Aneides, (2) describe the biomechanics and kinematics of aerial behaviors after a jump or extended fall, and (3) model airflow over the morphology of the most aerially adept salamanders to investigate if they are capable of generating lift. First, I recorded salamanders jumping, locomoting vertically, dropping, and flying in a vertical wind tunnel. Then, I laser-scanned and reconstructed …
The Development Of A Behaviorally Based Mentoring Workplace Scale, Christina N. Falcon
The Development Of A Behaviorally Based Mentoring Workplace Scale, Christina N. Falcon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to contribute to the mentoring literature by providing a new tool to measure mentoring behaviors and their effectiveness from the perspective of the protégé. To accomplish this, I used the specific mentoring behaviors outlined by previous research to develop a behaviorally based measure of mentorship. The items for this new behaviorally based mentoring effectiveness scale were developed to measure the same theoretical construct as previous mentoring scales, but with the intention of capturing effective behaviors instead of broader mentoring functions. This scale was developed through three main steps: a pilot study to narrow down …
Organizations Ensuring Resilience: A Case Study Of Cortez, Florida, Karla Ariel Maddox
Organizations Ensuring Resilience: A Case Study Of Cortez, Florida, Karla Ariel Maddox
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
“Resilience” has often been defined by examining case studies in resilience failures. In contrast, this case study utilizes the oldest, still functional fishing village in Cortez, Florida to rhetorically analyze how organizational communicative practices have worked to ensure its resilience. Situating this conversation within Rhetoric proves valuable since so many attempts to define and utilize “resilience” seek to capitalize on its positive connotation but distort resilience definitions and practice. This dissertation explores three research questions: 1. “What systems and/or structures made our continued existence possible and what ideologies or goals drove their creation?” 2. “What ideologies, perceptions, and/or goals inspired …
Self-Determination And The Lived Experience Of Employed Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Abdelrahman Mohammad Alzarie
Self-Determination And The Lived Experience Of Employed Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Abdelrahman Mohammad Alzarie
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Literature reveals that self-determination is a critical predictor of employment at the post-secondary level for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). However, current research concerning self-determination in the post-secondary work of individuals with ID is scarce and primarily focused on the perspectives of parents or educators or has been driven by evaluating learning models of self-determination. Furthermore, individuals with ID were not adequately represented as participants in the current research, and their voices were not given the opportunity to be heard. Therefore, this qualitative phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experience of six Saudi employed adults with mild ID who …
Partial Characterization Of Plasmodium Falciparum Genes Implicated In Altered Artemisinin Stress Response, Caroline F. Simmons
Partial Characterization Of Plasmodium Falciparum Genes Implicated In Altered Artemisinin Stress Response, Caroline F. Simmons
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Malaria is a parasitic illness caused by the Plasmodium spp., with an estimated 247 million malaria cases reported in 2021 across 84 endemic countries. Treatment of the deadliest malaria parasite, P. falciparum, relies on artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs). However, while ACTs have greatly decreased malaria mortality, this progress is threatened due to artemisinin (ART) partial resistance and ACT failure in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. SNPs to the Kelch13 (K13) gene are a well-characterized marker for ART resistance. However, increasing evidence that resistance to ART mediated by genes not related to K13 SNPs prompts the need to characterize other novel …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
How do communities living with chronic environmental contamination cope with the social, political, and economic impacts of the contamination? This research employs a community-engaged oral history approach with participant observation and archival research to address this question. We focus on the case of Tallevast, Florida, where the local groundwater has been contaminated with chlorinated solvents for over 60 years and where cleanup is estimated to take another 100 years. In addition to concerns about health and wellness, we find that residents are also concerned about household displacement and the disruption of social networks, failed governance at the local and state …
Who Goes And Who Stays: Predicting Hurricane Evacuation For Local Neighborhoods, Shakhawat Hosen Tanim
Who Goes And Who Stays: Predicting Hurricane Evacuation For Local Neighborhoods, Shakhawat Hosen Tanim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To reduce the devastating impacts of hurricanes on people’s lives, communities, and societal infrastructures, disaster management would benefit considerably from a detailed understanding of evacuation, including the socio-demographics of the populations that evacuate, or stay, down to disaggregated geographic levels such as neighborhoods. A detailed household evacuation prediction model for local neighborhoods requires both a robust household evacuation decision model and individual household data for small geographic units. To address the first of these, this dissertation performed a statistical meta-analysis of numerous survey-based hurricane evacuation studies to establish mean effect sizes for predictors impacting the household decision. To address the …
