Gnsi Decision Brief: Nuclear Weapons On The Battlefield: Arriving Sooner Rather Than Later?, Tad Schnaufer Ii
GNSI Decision Briefs
Imagine a Russian Colonel receiving an order from Moscow to deploy a tactical nuclear weapon (TNW) on the Ukrainian frontline. His next order – “Nuke ‘em” – rapidly changes the battlespace and in fact, the world. Since the inception of nuclear weapons in 1945, the threat of nuclear war has loomed over the globe. J. R. Oppenheimer, after the first successful test of an atomic bomb, recalled the Hindi scripture Bhagavad Gita: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." The power of nuclear weapons, along with the possibility of their use has only escalated since then. Starting in …

The Role Of Recreation In Preventing Delinquency And Misdemeanor In Children, Fidel Toker, Hatice Guclu Nergiz
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
The active role of recreation should be considered in the solution of social problems. In the elimination of the psychological and environmental causes of juvenile delinquency, the prevention of crime before it is committed must be taken as the basis rather than post-criminal rehabilitation (with recreational rehabilitation). For this purpose, researches showing that the tendency of crime and violence decrease with recreational activities were compiled by document analysis method. A wide literature search was made with appropriate keywords and these studies were interpreted with published statistical data. As a result of the research, it was found that the relationship between …

Predictive Modeling Of Cave Entrance Locations: Relationships Between Surface And Subsurface Morphology, William Blitch, Adia R. Sovie, Benjamin W. Tobin
International Journal of Speleology
Cave entrances directly connect the surface and subsurface geomorphology in karst landscapes. Understanding the spatial distribution of these features can help identify areas on the landscape that are critical to flow in the karst groundwater system. Sinkholes and springs are major locations of inflow and outflow from the groundwater system, respectively, however not all sinkholes and springs are equally connected to the main conduit system. Predicting where on the landscape zones of high connectivity exist is a challenge because cave entrances are difficult to detect and imperfectly documented. Wildlife research has a similar issue of understanding the complexities of where …

Role Of Short Interspersed Nuclear Elements (Sines) Of Maternally Imprinted Microrna Clusters In Hemochorial Placental Antiviral Immunity, Ishani Wickramage
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of hemochorial placentas in which the fetal trophoblast is bathed in maternal blood has vastly improved fetal development and survival in primates and rodents, due to the enhanced efficiency of nutrient, gas and waste exchange between the mother and the fetus. However, the extensive contact between the fetal tissues and maternal blood in these placentas also poses an increased risk of vertical transmission of pathogens such as viruses from the mother to the fetus. In response to this selection pressure, hemochorial placentas have evolved robust defense mechanisms to protect the immunologically naive fetus. Unlike somatic cells that require …

Modern medicine’s ability to treat a wide array of diseases is due mainly to the development of small-molecule drug discovery. Thousands of years of traditional medicines have been dwarfed in less than a hundred years. In addition, drug discovery has becoming a more consistent process with the introduction of the clinical trials process as well.Plasmodium is a genus of tropical parasites that have the potential to wreak havoc on billions of people globally. Current methods of drug discovery aimed at defeating these parasites require expensive assays that use radioactive material. By using an alkyne-labeled agent instead of a tritium-labeled agent, …

Around the turn of the century, as the United States increased its military presence in the Middle East in what was widely known as the War on Terror, computer games were also rising in popularity. Military inspired narratives and settings are very common in video games, especially in the genre known as the first person shooter – characterized by a single player, first person point of view. Alexander Galloway provides a vocabulary for understanding the video game, and the first person shooter in particular, derived from the framework of game studies. Scholarship around video games usually either seeks to affirm …
Exposure Characteristics Of Environmental Chemicals By Life Stages, Nisha Vijayakumar
Exposure Characteristics Of Environmental Chemicals By Life Stages, Nisha Vijayakumar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Environmental chemicals are ubiquitous and can contribute to human exposure. These exposures can result in long-term health consequences if they occur in early life. However, exposures to environmental chemicals are not evenly distributed throughout childhood. As a result, there exists variation in the levels of chemical exposure depending on the developmental stages, pathways of exposure, and broader systemic factors. However, in early life, limited research exists on exposures to environmental chemicals, particularly phthalates, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In addition, environmental exposures to phthalates, pesticides, and PAHs, considering life stages, have not been fully explored. Hence it is imperative …

Meta-Analysis Of United States Seabird Populations Based On Ocean Biodiversity Information System (Obis) Records (1965–2018), Savannah Hartman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the distribution of organisms is an important priority for society as we live through ecosystem transformations that threaten the well-being of all organisms. I have approached the dynamic and complex issue of studying biodiversity by using open-access seabird data collected along the Americas since the 1960s. I explained how these data have changed over time and space, how certain species populations could have shifted over time, and possible correlations between this potential geographic change and select environmental variables.
In Chapter 2 I evaluated the suitability of the open-access data archive Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) for supporting detailed inquiry …

Aotearoa New Zealand, The Forcible Transfer Of Tamariki And Rangatahi Māori, And The Royal Commission On Abuse In Care, David B. Macdonald
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article investigates to what extent the forcible transfer of tamariki and rangatahi Māori (Indigenous children and youth) in Aotearoa New Zealand can be considered genocide. First, I begin by exploring contemporary genocide theory as it relates to dolus eventualis in settler colonial contexts, before engaging with precedents for recognizing Indigenous genocides established by truth commissions in Canada (2015; 2019) and Australia (1997). I then explore the history around Indigenous child removal in Aotearoa from the onset of colonization to the present day, attentive to ways in which the UN Convention can apply to the forced removal of Māori children. …
