Taking Pleasure In Distinction: Unlocking Specialty Coffee Preference, Ondrej Mitas, Danny D. Han, Belle Struijer, Lotte Willems, Thomas H. Chatwick
Journal of Global Business Insights
Specialty coffee, comprising a tenth of the global coffee trade, is distinguished by its strict quality requirements and traceable origins. The diverse flavor profiles of specialty coffee raise demands on providers to serve individual taste preferences. Prior research has not sufficiently explored how to predict customer preferences for specific flavor profiles or how these preferences influence behavioral intentions such as revisiting or recommending a café. This study hypothesized that customer involvement, the extrinsic factors of coffee experience, and culinary risk-taking would predict flavor preference, which would in turn affect behavioral intentions. In an experiment involving 47 participants, individuals tasted and …

Examining Employees Under Stress By Pandemic, Hurricane, And Bridge Closure, Hilmi A. Atadil, Alison J. Green, Nestor M. Arguea
Journal of Global Business Insights
As researchers, recognizing and capturing once-in-a-lifetime events in real-time is essential. The researchers felt compelled to document the impacts of the natural disasters, pandemics, and bridge closures that directly affected the geographical area in which they lived. These sequential crises touched countless lives in the region. Most critically, disseminating and recording these rapid developments has been vital so that others may learn from this time when faced with similar situations. It is the duty of researchers immersed in such extraordinary circumstances to acknowledge and examine the implications in the moment, given the singularity of living through consecutive disasters of this …

Examination Of The Delphi Method For Establishing A Quantitative Literacy Framework In Undergraduate Mathematics Course, Emily Elrod, Joo Young Park
Examination Of The Delphi Method For Establishing A Quantitative Literacy Framework In Undergraduate Mathematics Course, Emily Elrod, Joo Young Park
Numeracy
The increased relevancy and importance of quantitative literacy (QL) have called for educational reform in undergraduate mathematics course offerings. However, lack of clear guidelines has led to wide variability in the content and outcomes of math courses meant to address QL. Therefore, having an expert consensus regarding content and outcomes for an undergraduate mathematics course focusing on QL would advance the quantitative literacy initiative in higher education. The authors propose the Delphi Method to aid in developing a framework based on expert opinions. The authors explain the Method and suggest the result of this process should yield a research-based framework …

Florida has emerged in recent years as a breeding ground for a new generation of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The state has introduced 10 anti-LGBTQ+ laws so far in 2023, touching on issues such as bathroom access, healthcare, and education. This paper analyzes the experiences of queer and transgender people living in Florida to ask: How do LGBTQ+ people in Florida cope phenomenologically with rising anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination? Drawing on data from 22 interviews with LGBTQ+ people situated in and around Florida in 2023, this paper captures a distinct political moment for the people that I spoke with, as anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments continue to …
Androgen Drives Melanoma Invasiveness And Metastatic Spread By Inducing Tumorigenic Fucosylation, Qian Liu
Androgen Drives Melanoma Invasiveness And Metastatic Spread By Inducing Tumorigenic Fucosylation, Qian Liu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Melanoma incidence and mortality rates are historically higher for men than women, with an estimated ~47% more new cases and twice the lethality in men in the US in 2023. Consistent with these discrepancies, emerging studies have highlighted the tumorigenic role of the male sex hormone androgen and its receptor (AR) in promoting melanoma aggressiveness. However, underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms and their precise pathological contributions are not well-defined. We recently discovered a sex-associated disparity in melanoma fucosylation, the post-translational modification of proteins with the dietary sugar L-fucose. Fucosylation, the conjugation of fucose moieties onto different glycan linkages on target …

(Daphne, 62)
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is one of many chronic illnesses considered to be “invisible.” Once the onset of symptoms occurs, the illness can drastically change the dynamic of an individual's life in ways that may not be noticeable to others, even before a chronic illness diagnosis. I discuss how these individuals experience the liminal period of developing symptoms and seeking a diagnosis. Furthermore, I discuss vignettes that exemplifies the occurrence of a liminal state while looking at the current for-profit set-up of healthcare in the United States. Utilizing …

Elucidating The Role Of The Tumor Suppressor Gene Rna-Binding Motif 5 (Rbm5) In Models Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Kara L. Snyder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide health burden that causes death and disability. Clinical management of TBI involves guideline-based protocols to limit secondary brain injury but there remains an unmet need for therapeutics to target neuroprotection and to improve cognitive outcomes in patients. This dissertation concerns the examination of RNA binding motif 5 (RBM5) as a potential therapeutic gene target to promote neuroprotection in models of TBI. RBM5 is a potent pro-death tumor suppressor gene in cancer. We hypothesized that it also promotes cell death in neurons in the brain and therefore its inhibition would decrease neuropathology following CNS …

Horizontal Economic Inequality And Mass Atrocity Risk: A Large-Sample Empirical Inquiry, Charles H. Anderton, Roxane A. Anderton
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Our research question is: Does inter-group horizontal economic inequality elevate state-perpetrated mass atrocity risk? Theoretical perspectives in genocide studies show how economic and other forms of discrimination against ethnic or religious groups can elevate the risk of government violence against them. Among the approximately five dozen large-sample empirical studies of mass atrocity risk, only a few consider the effects of economic discrimination. Moreover, no large-sample empirical studies, to the best of our knowledge, test hypotheses related to how inter-group horizontal economic inequalities (as distinct from vertical economic inequalities based on GINI coefficients or quantile income or wealth measures) affect mass …

As disclosed herein, β-arrestin1 and β-arrestin2 levels are highly elevated in brains of FTLD-tau patients suggesting that both β-arrestin1 and β-arrestin2 are elevated in the brains of patients with AD and FLTD. The current work also shows that when β-arrestin2 is overexpressed, tau levels become elevated. The data indicate that β-arrestin2 reduces tau clearance by impairing p62-mediated autophagy, a role carried out by the oligomerized form of β-arrestin2. Therefore, disclosed herein are β-arrestin oligomerization inhibitors that can be used to prevent β-arrestin oligomerization and therefore the accumulation of tau in cells, i.e. tauopathy. Also disclosed are methods of treating a …
