Using Digital Twins To Protect Biomanufacturing From Cyberattacks, Brenden Fraser-Hevlin, Alec W. Schuler, B. Arda Gozen, Bernard J. Van Wie
Using Digital Twins To Protect Biomanufacturing From Cyberattacks, Brenden Fraser-Hevlin, Alec W. Schuler, B. Arda Gozen, Bernard J. Van Wie
Military Cyber Affairs
Understanding of the intersection of cyber vulnerabilities and bioprocess regulation is critical with the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning in manufacturing. We detail a case study in which we model cyberattacks on network-mediated signals from a novel bioreactor, where it is important to control medium feed rates to maintain cell proliferation. We use a digital twin counterpart reactor to compare glucose and oxygen sensor signals from the bioreactor to predictions from a kinetic growth model, allowing discernment of faulty sensors from hacked signals. Our results demonstrate a successful biomanufacturing cyberattack detection system based on fundamental process control principles.

Characterizing Advanced Persistent Threats Through The Lens Of Cyber Attack Flows, Logan Zeien, Caleb Chang, Ltc Ekzhin Ear, Dr. Shouhuai Xu
Military Cyber Affairs
Effective cyber defense must build upon a deep understanding of real-world cyberattacks to guide the design and deployment of appropriate defensive measures against current and future attacks. In this abridged paper (of which the full paper is available online), we present important concepts for understanding Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), our methodology to characterize APTs through the lens of attack flows, and a detailed case study of APT28 that demonstrates our method’s viability to draw useful insights. This paper makes three technical contributions. First, we propose a novel method of constructing attack flows to describe APTs. This abstraction allows technical audiences, …

Deep learning finds rich applications in the tactical domain by learning from diverse data sources and performing difficult tasks to support mission-critical applications. However, deep learning models are susceptible to various attacks and exploits. In this paper, we first discuss application areas of deep learning in the tactical domain. Next, we present adversarial machine learning as an emerging attack vector and discuss the impact of adversarial attacks on the deep learning performance. Finally, we discuss potential defense methods that can be applied against these attacks.
Good Medicine Vs. The Gender Binary: An Analysis Of Existing Research On The Effects Of Gender-Normalizing Care For Intersex Patients To Determine The Research Gaps That Must Be Filled In Order To Create Inclusive Clinical Guidelines For All Intersex People, Aimee R. Etheridge
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
This thesis examines the medical treatment of intersex individuals through a public health and critical gender theory lens, evaluating whether current gender-normalizing interventions are evidence-based healthcare practices or reflections of the institutionalized gender binary in Western medicine. The study reviews existing literature on intersex prevalence, contemporary standards of care, the physical and psychological consequences of gender-normalizing surgeries and hormone therapies, and the decision-making processes that guide treatment for intersex children. Findings indicate that many interventions, including genital surgeries and gonadectomies performed during infancy or early childhood, often occur before patients can provide informed consent and may result in long-term complications …
Exploring E-Bikes In The Era Of Electrification: Toward A More Sustainable And Equitable Transportation System, Ipek Nese Sener, Laura Higgins, Kyuhyun Lee
Exploring E-Bikes In The Era Of Electrification: Toward A More Sustainable And Equitable Transportation System, Ipek Nese Sener, Laura Higgins, Kyuhyun Lee
Research Reports
While increasing electrification is vital, additional steps are necessary to maximize its benefits in terms of reducing congestion and promoting sustainable, accessible, and equitable transportation for all. E-bikes, operating at speeds faster than pedal-only bicycles and requiring less physical effort to ride, have the potential to offer transportation alternatives to a diverse range of users. However, many individuals who could benefit from e-bikes face barriers to accessing or using this mode of transportation. In this context, the primary objective of this study is to enhance our understanding of the barriers, concerns, and needs associated with e-bikes. Recognizing that such understanding …

Performing Presidential Age: "It's About How Old Your Ideas Are", Valerie Barnes Lipscomb
English Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
During a February surprise appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, President Joe Biden whipped out his trademark aviator sunglasses and traded quips with Meyers about a supposed conspiracy with Taylor Swift, much to the delight of the younger live audience. The next day, reviews were mixed about whether the president was trying too hard or did in fact manage to look hipper. To look younger. While US presidential nominees have been consciously performing their campaigns for decades, during this cycle, considering age as a performance has been especially prominent. Commentators and critics have specifically addressed the careful staging of …
Understanding Bicycle Signal Operations And Leading Bicycle Interval (Lbi) Implementations, Yaye Keita, Shubhankar Shindgikar
Understanding Bicycle Signal Operations And Leading Bicycle Interval (Lbi) Implementations, Yaye Keita, Shubhankar Shindgikar
CUTR Internal Grant Research Program
Bikes are among the sustainable modes of transportation and bicycling can help decrease congestion, reduce emissions, and enhance health. Due to their numerous benefits, they are currently one of the promoted modes in the United States. Yet, bicyclists are vulnerable roadway users and are subject to safety concerns. The safety challenges faced by bicyclists are more evident when looking at serious crashes. Although only 1.9% of total crashes are bicycle related, bicycle crashes account for 5.6% of fatal crashes (Alluri et al., 2017).
For years, Florida has had the largest number of bicyclist fatalities in the nation. As a result, …
Locating, Characterizing, And Comparing Submerged Precontact Site Hubbard Spring To Other Submerged Spring Sites Throughout Florida, Madison Day
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The rise of sea level over the past 20,000 years has led to the submersion of nearly half of Florida’s original land mass, causing freshwater springs hypothesized to have been a gathering spot for prehistoric people to become submerged. As the water rose, humans lost touch with their ancestors’ ways of life and migratory patterns. In recent years, however, interests in the potential significant cultural, archeological, and paleontological resources at submerged spring sites on the West Florida Shelf have spiked among geo-archeologists, historical experts, biologists, and geologists.
The goal of the WF2305 research cruise aboard the R/V Western Flyer was …

Spectral Properties Of Wetlands In Michigan Using Remote Sensing To Identify And Classify Wetlands In Roscommon County, Michigan, Kolin Williamson
Spectral Properties Of Wetlands In Michigan Using Remote Sensing To Identify And Classify Wetlands In Roscommon County, Michigan, Kolin Williamson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Biological, geological, and physical. These are only a handful of the many environmental aspects that wetlands functions maintain and protect. Unfortunately, wetlands within the United States have been razed at an alarming rate. The State of Michigan has not gone through this unscathed either, loosing over 1000 acres of wetland a year. One of the most important tools to prevent this destruction are the maps and programs that show where these essential ecosystems are located. The current, federally-created maps and imaging software in use by environmental consultants and contractors may not be up to date which can pose challenges for …
