Language Choice And Global Learning Networks: The Pitfall Of Lingua Franca Approaches To Classroom Telecomputing, Dennis Sayers
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
How can other languages be used in conjunction with English to further intercultural and multilingual learning when teachers and students participate in computer-based global learning networks? Two portraits are presented of multilingual activities in the Orillas and I*EARN learning networks, and are discussed as examples of the principal modalities of communication employed in networking projects between distant classes. ...

Brave New Reductionism: Tqm As Ethnocentrism, Dionysios Dennis
Brave New Reductionism: Tqm As Ethnocentrism, Dionysios Dennis
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
At century's end, practices at institutions of higher education are regularly subjected to a numbing array of stresses. Under the umbrella of fiscal austerity, intensified regimes of surveillance, in the form of corporatist management philosophies such as Total Quality Management (TQM), have been widely imposed. TQM proponents now advocate the total managementof human thought and identity. In a blatantly econometric and ethnocentric discourse where human variability is a "virus" to be "eliminated" under a war metaphor, nothing less than the future of independent intellectual work is at stake. This essay primarily explores how the theoretical roots and contemporary tropes of …

Hydrobiological Monitoring Program - Summary Report For The Lower Peace River And Charlotte Harbor, Environmental Quality Laboratory, Inc.
Reports
Unlike previous Long-Term Hydrobiological Monitoring Summary Reports, this document has been subdivided into three separate subsections to facilitate the reader in reviewing the large number of Tables and Figures contained within the overall text.
As required under the most recent Peace River Water Supply Facility WUP Permit (#2010420.01), this document summarizes and extends the findings reported previously regarding phytoplankton primary production and community structure at four salinity zones within the Lower Peace River and Upper Charlotte Harbor between 1983 and 1993. In addition, the taxonomic composition and structure of phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages from samples collected, between 1988 and 1993, …

Introduction To Insect Behavioral Ecology : The Good, The Bad, And The Beautiful: Non-Indigenous Species In Florida. Invasive Adventive Insects And Other Organisms In Florida, J H. Frank, Earl D. Mccoy
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
An excessive proportion of adventive (=“non-indigenous”) species in a community has been called “biological pollution.” Proportions of adventive species of fishes, amphibia, reptiles, birds and mammals in southern Florida range from 16% to more than 42%. In Florida as a whole, the proportion of adventive plants is about 26%, but of insects is only about 8%. Almost all of the vertebrates were introduced as captive pets, but escaped or were released into the wild, and established breeding populations; few arrived as immigrants (= “of their own volition”). Almost all of the plants also were introduced, a few arrived as immigrants …

Seagrass And Caulerpa Monitoring In Hillsborough Bay Sixth Annual Report, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers
Reports
This is the sixth annual report to FDER to satisfy the requirements set forth in specific condition #14 of FDER construction permit DO29-1845321B.
The City of Tampa, Bay Study Group (BSG), has monitored the effects of sewage pollution abatement in Hillsborough Bay since 1976. Within the last decade, water quality improvements and evidence of minor seagrass revegetation in Hillsborough Bay prompted the BSG to initiate a seagrass study to compliment other programs assessing the environmental status of Hillsborough Bay.
