Construction Of A Late Pleistocene Paleothermometer Based On Amino Acid Racemization In Fossil Succinea Shells, Richard Ayres Walther Sep 2004

Construction Of A Late Pleistocene Paleothermometer Based On Amino Acid Racemization In Fossil Succinea Shells, Richard Ayres Walther

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Racemization kinetics of amino acids, determined for the commonly occurring fossil gastropod Succinea, facilitates the ability to construct an accurate and precise paleothermometer to estimate paleotemperatures over specific time intervals during the last 150,000 years in parts of Central Europe. Racemization within the carbonate shell of Succcinea is induced at high temperatures over increasing intervals of time in the laboratory and measured for aspartic acid (asp), glutamic acid (glu), valine (val), and phenylalanine (phe), by reverse-phase liquid chromatography.

The activation energy (Ea), frequency factor (A), and forward rate constant (k1) of the Arrhenius equation are determined from …

Hydrogeology Of The Sistema Huautla Karst Groundwater Basin Association For Mexican Cave Studies Bulletin, Vol. 9, 2002, James H. Smith Jr.

KIP Articles

Sistema Huautla, in 2002 the world’s seventh deepest cave, at 1,475 meters, is one of the most complex vertical drainage systems in the world. The focus of this research was to study the geology, karst hydrology, and speleology of the Sistema Huautla cave system. Literature review and subsequent field mapping identified the geologic formations and tectonic structures that Sistema Huautla and tributary caves are developed within. Structural geology studies within the aquifer indicate that base-level conduits in the mapped portion of the aquifer are formed along a major normal fault system called the Sistema Huautla Fault. Conduits in other sections …

The Scalloping Phenomenon And Its Significance In Flowassisted-Corrosion., Villien Benoit, Y. Zheng, D. H. Lister

KIP Articles

The recently observed Flow-Assisted Corrosion (FAC) of CANDU outlet feeders is associated with a texturing of the corroding surface, called "scalloping", that imparts the appearance of orange peel. To study the evolution of erosion and dissolution patterns contributing to scalloping and to derive the link with corrosion, experiments on the dissolution of pipes made of plaster of Paris (CaSO4.½H2O) are being carried out. Flow-Assisted Corrosion is a significant problem with carbon steel components handling rapidly moving water or water/steam mixtures in the power generating industry. The mechanism of FAC in outlet feeders of CANDU reactors can be described in terms …

"Hades" - A Remarkable Cave On Oldoinyo Lengai In The East African Rift Valley, Gordon J. Davies

International Journal of Speleology

Oldoinyo Lengai is the world’s only active carbonatite volcano, situated in northern Tanzania within the Eastern Rift Valley, al 2.751 degrees S, 35.902 degrees E. It forms an isolated symmetrical cone at the southern end of Lake Natron, with a summit elevation of 2,890 m (9,480 ft). Periodic eruptions of ash and lava have been recorded since about 1880, and with increasing precision during this century since 1904. In 1990 a routine expedition to monitor activity levels at the summit led to the discovery of a remarkable cave located in the crater floor, filled with numerous long delicate pale yellow …

Some Tests Of Wet Tropospheric Calibration For The Casa Uno Global Positioning System Experiment, Timothy H. Dixon, S. Kornreich Wolf Mar 1990

Some Tests Of Wet Tropospheric Calibration For The Casa Uno Global Positioning System Experiment, Timothy H. Dixon, S. Kornreich Wolf

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Wet tropospheric path delay can be a major error source for Global Positioning System (GPS) geodetic experiments. We investigate strategies for minimizing this error using data from CASA Uno, the first major GPS experiment in Central and South America, where wet path delays may be both high and variable. We compared wet path delay calibration using water vapor radiometers (WVRs) and residual delay estimation, with strategies where the entire wet path delay is estimated stochastically without prior calibration, using data from a 270 km test baseline in Costa Rica. Both approaches yield centimeter-level baseline repeatability and similar tropospheric estimates, suggesting …

Hydrology And Water Quality Of The Edwards Aquifer Associated With Barton Springs In The Austin Area, Texas, Raymond M. Slade Jr., Michael E. Dorsey, Sheree L. Stewart Jan 1986

Hydrology And Water Quality Of The Edwards Aquifer Associated With Barton Springs In The Austin Area, Texas, Raymond M. Slade Jr., Michael E. Dorsey, Sheree L. Stewart

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Urban development over the Edwards aquifer in the Austin, Texas, area has caused concerns about the availability and quality of water in the aquifer. The study area, the Edwards aquifer that discharges to Barton Springs, includes parts of Travis and Hays Counties and extends from the city of Kyle to the Colorado River. A large part of the aquifer lies within the Austin metropolitan area one of the fastest growing areas in the Nation. As of 1985, only about 30,000 people used water from the aquifer, however, according to recent official city of Austin population projections, about 86,000 more people …

Origination Of Stone Forests In China, Lin Hua Song Jan 1986

Origination Of Stone Forests In China, Lin Hua Song

International Journal of Speleology

The stone forests are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical climatic areas. The stone forests may be divided into hilltop stone forest, hill slope stone forest and the stone forest in the depressions or valleys. The conditions for stone forest development should be (1) thick and pure limestone, (2) gentle dipping of limestone formation, generally less than 15°, (3) a lot of vertical joint and fissure networks, (4) the soil covering on the limestone surface inhomogeneous, thick in the fissures and thin on the rock top surface, and (5) the soil should be wet and contain rich organic materials …
