The Impact Of Weather On Bus Ridership In Pierce County, Washington, Victor W. Stover, Edward D. Mccormack Mar 2012

The Impact Of Weather On Bus Ridership In Pierce County, Washington, Victor W. Stover, Edward D. Mccormack

Journal of Public Transportation

A factor that influences transit ridership but has not received much attention from researchers is weather. This paper examines the effects of weather on bus ridership in Pierce County, Washington, for the years 2006–2008. Separate ordinary least squares regression models were estimated for each season, as weather conditions may have different effects depending on the time of year. Four weather variables were considered: wind, temperature, rain, and snow. High winds negatively affected ridership in winter, spring, and autumn. Cold temperatures led to decreases in ridership in winter. Rain negatively affected ridership in all four seasons, and snow was associated with …

The Potential Role Of Flexible Transport Services In Enhancing Rural Public Transport Provision, Nagendra R. Velaga, John D. Nelson, Steve D. Wright, John H. Farrington Mar 2012

The Potential Role Of Flexible Transport Services In Enhancing Rural Public Transport Provision, Nagendra R. Velaga, John D. Nelson, Steve D. Wright, John H. Farrington

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper explores the existing context of public transport provision in rural and remote areas illustrated with experience from Scotland. A critical review of existing Flexible Transport Services (FTS) in rural areas is provided and illustrated with selected case studies, with the objective of identifying the extent to which FTS can enhance the public transport offer. Findings confirm that FTS offers considerable potential to contribute to and support the public transport system in rural areas; however, the paper also identifies the many challenges in successful development or enhancement of FTS in rural areas.

Tales Of Empire: Orientalism In Nineteenth-Century Children's Literature, Brittany Renee Griffin Feb 2012

Tales Of Empire: Orientalism In Nineteenth-Century Children's Literature, Brittany Renee Griffin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Children's literature often does not hold the same weight in the studies of a culture as its big brother, the novel. However, as children's literature is written by adults, to convey information which is important for a child to learn in order to be a functioning member of that society, it can be analyzed in the same way novels are, to provide insight into the broad sweeping issues that concerned the adults of that era. Nineteenth-century British children's literature in particular reveals the deep-seated preoccupation the British Empire had with its eastern colonies, and shows how England's relationship to those …

Sedimentary Succesion Of The Lower Cretaceous Deposits From The North-Western Part Of Pădurea Craiului (Apuseni Mountains, Romania), Daniel F. Lazar, Ioan I. Bucur, Ioan Cociuba, Emanoil Sasaran Feb 2012

Sedimentary Succesion Of The Lower Cretaceous Deposits From The North-Western Part Of Pădurea Craiului (Apuseni Mountains, Romania), Daniel F. Lazar, Ioan I. Bucur, Ioan Cociuba, Emanoil Sasaran

Studia UBB Geologia

Within the general succession of the Lower Cretaceous deposits from the Vârciorog-Dobreşti area (Pădurea Craiului Mountains), carbonate and terrigenous deposits were identified. The limestones were assigned to two distinctive lithostratigraphic units: the Valea Măgurii and Vârciorog formations. Based on the orbitolinids Palorbitolina lenticularis and Mesorbitolina texana their ages are assigned to the early Aptian, and respectively late Aptian–Albian. The terrigenous facies mainly include fine grained deposits (clays, siltites, marls) and, to a lesser extent, coarser ones (glauconitic sandstones and conglomerates), and they are attributed to the Ecleja and Vârciorog formations. The marls of the Ecleja Formation have been observed in …

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence Jan 2012

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cemeteries are microcosms of society bound together in sacred spaces. As manifestations of social mores, cemeteries allow anthropologists to obtain information on social development and structure. Where noninvasive study is mandated, crucial methods of interpretation include studies of landscape design, floral incorporation, grave marker design and development, and grave mementos. This thesis discusses these and other methods as they are used to infer group mores. It also indicates how information acquired from methods can be adversely affected by outside influences, such as vandalism, weathering, and replotting. This thesis adds to known methods of cemetery research another unbiased, noninvasive tool that …

Using Gis To Enhance Programs Serving Emancipated Youth Leaving Foster Care, Catherine Batsche, Steven Reader Jan 2012

Using Gis To Enhance Programs Serving Emancipated Youth Leaving Foster Care, Catherine Batsche, Steven Reader

Dean's Office Publications

This article describes a GIS prototype designed to assist with the identification and evaluation of housing that is affordable, safe, and effective in supporting the educational goals and parental status of youth transitioning from foster care following emancipation. Spatial analysis was used to identify rental properties based on three inclusion criteria (affordability, proximity to public transportation, and proximity to grocery stores), three exclusion criteria (areas of high crime, prostitution, and sexual predator residence), and three suitability criteria (proximity to health care, mental health care, and youth serving organizations). The results were applied to four different scenarios to test the utility …

Holocene High Floods On The Planina Polje, Classical Dinaric Karst, Slovenia, Uroš Stepišnik, Mateja Ferk, Luka Černuta

KIP Articles

The Planina Polje is located in the northwestern part of Notranjsko Podolje, Slovenia. Annual floods cover the flattened floor of the polje at elevation 445 m a.s.l. and reach the depth of approximately 8 meters. Loamy sediments which were found on surface and subsurface features from the inflow part of Planina Polje up to the elevations of about 495 m a.s.l., indirectly show that floods in the past must have been much more extensive than the recent ones. Radiocarbon dating of flowstone layer from such extreme floods appeared around 5,706 t +- 49 BP. The time frame of the flood …

The Good, The Bad, And The Garbage : The Making Of Modern Florida Solid Waste Policy, Andrew David Fairbanks Jan 2012

The Good, The Bad, And The Garbage : The Making Of Modern Florida Solid Waste Policy, Andrew David Fairbanks

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

In 2008, Florida enacted its Energy, Climate Change, and Economic Security Act (2008 Energy Act). Among its provisions was a new goal to recycle 75 percent of municipal solid waste, the highest statewide recycling goal in the U.S. at that time. Florida's previous goal was 30 percent, set by its Solid Waste Management Act in 1988. The 2008 Energy Act also modified how the state calculates its recycling rate by specifying that “any solid waste used for the production of renewable energy” would be counted. The 2008 Energy Act directed the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to develop a plan …

George Snow Hill: A Wpa Artist And His Contributions To Florida And Tampa Bay, Diane M. Craig

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Artist and muralist George Snow Hill was St. Petersburg’s only known link to the Work Progress Administration’s Federal Arts Project, an innovative program that paid citizens to creatively chronicle 1930s America. Perhaps Florida’s most prolific New Deal muralist, Hill, and his many works, have remained virtually unknown to most Floridians, and to many in his adopted city. Undoubtedly defined by a charge of visual racism in 1966, Hill’s cultural contributions to the St. Petersburg’s art community have drifted into obscurity. Through a review of his work, especially his murals in Pinellas County, ephemera that included personal correspondence, and newspaper clippings, …

Local Institutions For Subsistence Harvesting In Western Alaska: Assessing Their Adaptive Role In The Context Of Global Change, Colin Thor West, Connor Ross Jan 2012

Local Institutions For Subsistence Harvesting In Western Alaska: Assessing Their Adaptive Role In The Context Of Global Change, Colin Thor West, Connor Ross

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article identifies key types of local institutions rural Alaska Native communities use to manage subsistence resources such as fish, game, and edible plants. Local institutions are the informal rules and norms communities use to manage these and other natural resources. Other scholars have mostly discussed them in the context of how they help subsistence users cope with ecological fluctuations in the abundance of certain species. The study presented here discusses them within a larger context of social and economic change. These local institutions were identified based on personal interviews with 62 active subsistence users in six different Yup’ik communities …

Closet Crusaders : The Johns Committee And Homophobia, 1956-1965, James Anthony Schnur

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

John Howard's anthology, published by New York University Press in 1997, offered one of the first substantial monographs that examined the history of gays and lesbians in the American South. Chapters examined various time periods and geographical regions. Schnur's chapter focused on the Florida Legislative Investigation Committee, also known as the Johns Committee. This interim committee of the state legislature conducted a number of witch hunts that targeted perceived communists, socialists, advocates of integration, and homosexuals. This chapter was edited and revised from Schnur's 1995 M.A. thesis in history at the University of South Florida.

Speleothem Laminae Counting And Growth Rate, Corey Wilson Jan 2012

Speleothem Laminae Counting And Growth Rate, Corey Wilson

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The goal of this project is to determine if there is a correlation between annual laminae in speleothems and Uranium dating. To do this, we counted laminae using high-resolution images and calculated a line of the best fit for the resulting data. We found that our data could supplement Uranium dating, but unless more data is obtained, laminae counting gives relatively imprecise age and growth rate estimates.

Tourism, Persistence, And Change: Sherpa Spirituality And Place In Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) National Park And Buffer Zone, Nepal, Jeremy Spoon

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Ecotourism and cultural tourism are emerging as vehicles for many of the world’s indigenous peoples to integrate into the global market economy. The ecological knowledge and understanding of these societies may in turn be affected by these nascent industries. As part of shifting human-environment relationships, tourism can influence place-based spirituality. In this manuscript, I describe research on how tourism affected Khumbu Sherpa place-based spiritual values in Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park and Buffer Zone, Nepal. As Tibetan Buddhists, the Sherpa embodied dual overlapping conceptions of sacred landscape that connected people to place in some environmentally sustainable ways. Since the 1960s, …

Crossing International And Research Boundaries: From Subject To Author For An Authentic Refugee Portrait, Jasenka Besic, J. Lynn Mcbrien

School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

Scholars in training, including qualitative researchers, are often cautioned about their relationship to their research participants with the notion that “getting too close” can distort findings. However, with many participants, especially those with whom issues of trust are problematic due to their personal experiences, researchers cannot gain rich data without creating an authentic and close relationship. In this longitudinal study, a female Bosnian youth and an academic researcher grapple with issues of trust, friendship, and research in an effort to determine ways to create valid research findings over years of relationship building.

Identifying The Link Between Lineament And Cave Passage Trends To Comprehend Fractures Continuity And Influence On The Kinta Valley Karst System, Solomon Kassa, Bernard Pierson, Weng S. Chow, Jasmi B. Ab. Talib Jan 2012

Identifying The Link Between Lineament And Cave Passage Trends To Comprehend Fractures Continuity And Influence On The Kinta Valley Karst System, Solomon Kassa, Bernard Pierson, Weng S. Chow, Jasmi B. Ab. Talib

International Journal of Speleology

The Kinta Valley karst landscape is characterised by residual limestone hills scattered all over the valley. The aim of this study is to ascertain the link between lineament and cave passage orientations, and to identify the main fracture controlling the karst features. To achieve that, standard cave surveying and direct lineament extraction techniques, from a 2.5m resolution spot image, were employed. Six trends of lineaments were obtained from the remnant limestone hills, and their main orientation appears to be in the NNW-SSE. Similarly, various caves were surveyed and mapped; their passage orientation analyses reveal that NNW-SSE is the prominent direction. …
