Cultural Theory And Acceptance-Based Security Strategies For Humanitarian Aid Workers, Adam K. Childs
Cultural Theory And Acceptance-Based Security Strategies For Humanitarian Aid Workers, Adam K. Childs
Journal of Strategic Security
Humanitarian aid agencies have relied primarily on acceptance as their primary risk, or security, management strategy for well over a decade. Evidence suggests, however, that this strategy has become ineffective, as the number of targeted attacks against humanitarian aid workers has been steadily increasing over the past two decades. Despite the urgency of the situation, aid agencies have struggled to effectively implement new strategies and still rely primarily on acceptance as a mitigating strategy. This article examines the limitations of acceptance as practiced by humanitarian aid agencies as a strategy against targeted attacks and the challenges in adopting new strategies. …
Iranian Democratization Part I: A Historical Case Study Of The Iranian Green Movement, Victor H. Sundquist
Iranian Democratization Part I: A Historical Case Study Of The Iranian Green Movement, Victor H. Sundquist
Journal of Strategic Security
The 2009 Iranian Presidential Elections represented one of the most contentious displays of the evolving Iranian democracy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that led to the removal of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi – the nation’s last shah. This tumultuous political event not only exposed a growing rift between the political and religious ruling elite in that country; it also led to the emergence of an opposition movement that would later be known as the Green Revolution. Viewed through a Western political lens, this revolution represented yet another opportunity for the demise of the ruling Iranian Islamic Regime. Recently, some scholars …

The Impact Of Hiawatha Light Rail On Commercial And Industrial Property Values In Minneapolis, Kate Ko, Xinyu (Jason) Cao
The Impact Of Hiawatha Light Rail On Commercial And Industrial Property Values In Minneapolis, Kate Ko, Xinyu (Jason) Cao
Journal of Public Transportation
The impact of proximity to transit on property values has become a key question in the debate on the relationships between public infrastructure investment and economic development. The focus has been on value captured by residential properties, with far fewer studies examining non-residential properties. Furthermore, few studies differentiate the effect of rail access and the effect of access to major interactions that later become station sites, and even fewer addressed the gradient of the accessibility effect. Based on the economic theory of firm location choice, this study develops hedonic pricing models to assess the value-added of the Hiawatha LRT on …
Lesson 9: 16th Century Spain In The New World- The Guale Rebellion, Alexander Vidal
Lesson 9: 16th Century Spain In The New World- The Guale Rebellion, Alexander Vidal
Hispanic Heritage of Florida Conference 2012
When thinking about the Spanish exploration and colonization of the New World, one tends to visualize images of conquistadors waging war and triumphing over Native Americans. However, the Spanish also tried another approach of dealing with the indigenous peoples by converting them to Catholicism, a policy and program that was not always successful.

Students' Perceptions On Issues Related To Globalization At A Four-Year Community College In Florida, Vickie Hall Stevens
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to survey community college students in order to evaluate their perceptions of the awareness and significance of global-mindedness or worldview of interconnectedness to the global community. The sample of participants included students at a 4-year community college in Florida. The results can be valuable and informative as a needs assessment in curriculum reforms to provide more globally minded courses and programs; consequently, better prepare graduates to compete in the global job market.

National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013
Welcome Cave and Karst Managers, Explorers, and Scientists!
On behalf of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, US Forest Service, and the Organizing Committee, we’re delighted to be your hosts for the 20th National Cave and Karst Management Symposium (NCKMS).
Our theme this year, A Changing Climate, reflects the many changes currently affecting cave and karst management. But change has always been a constant. This conference series began in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1975, as the National Cave Management Symposium. There was considerable diversity in that meeting’s topics. All were based in …

Home Gardens As Transported Landscapes: Ethnobotanical Encounters With Southeast Asian- American Horticulturists, Lauren A. Munim
Home Gardens As Transported Landscapes: Ethnobotanical Encounters With Southeast Asian- American Horticulturists, Lauren A. Munim
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
This research examines the belief systems, knowledge base and practice of Southeast Asian-Americans residing on the West Coast of Florida. The importance of traditional ecological knowledge in the cultivation of home gardens as relocated venues for cultural preservation of migrant horticulturalists is illustrated. Data collection methods include: participant observations, semi-structured interviews, geospatial mapping, and identification of key food and medicinal plant species. Home gardens serve as reconstructed landscapes for immigrant populations by stimulating cultural preservation of plants used in traditional healing, thus space providing a venue for the intergenerational transfer of traditional knowledge. Transported landscapes require traditional ecological knowledge regarding …
The Big Watermelon: A Cultural History Of Florida's Brooksville Ridge, Douglas E. Ponticos
The Big Watermelon: A Cultural History Of Florida's Brooksville Ridge, Douglas E. Ponticos
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
The Brooksville Ridge has long been the dominant cultural landscape of westcentral Florida. Though rarely used as a cultural designation today, the region’s landscapes continue to unify a people. More than simply an environmental or geologic region, the Brooksville Ridge was born in a period of colonialism and exuberant extraction for distant markets. Before the Ridge, west-central Florida landscapes, such as Amasura and Withlacoochee, were defined predominantly by local and regional needs. This thesis uses a number of primary and secondary documents to trace the changing cultural landscapes of west-central Florida, from pre-Columbian and Seminole landscapes to the rise of …
Gardening As Ethnographic Research: Volunteering As A Means For Community Access, Andrew Flachs
Gardening As Ethnographic Research: Volunteering As A Means For Community Access, Andrew Flachs
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
This paper shows the ways that ethnographers can develop a more effective qualitative understanding of community gardens by volunteering as gardeners. It explains how volunteering helps gain access to different facets of the garden community. Ultimately, it shows that volunteering can provide an anthropological perspective on the idea, prevalent in the literature, that many people join community gardens only for the economic benefits.

Penetration Of Uv-Visible Solar Radiation In The Global Oceans: Insights From Ocean Color Remote Sensing, Zhongping Lee, Chuanmin Hu, Shaoling Shang, Keping Du, Marlon Lewis, Robert Arnone, Robert Brewin
Penetration Of Uv-Visible Solar Radiation In The Global Oceans: Insights From Ocean Color Remote Sensing, Zhongping Lee, Chuanmin Hu, Shaoling Shang, Keping Du, Marlon Lewis, Robert Arnone, Robert Brewin
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Penetration of solar radiation in the ocean is determined by the attenuation coefficient (Kd(λ)). Following radiative transfer theory, Kd is a function of angular distribution of incident light and water's absorption and backscattering coefficients. Because these optical products are now generated routinely from satellite measurements, it is logical to evolve the empirical Kd to a semianalytical Kd that is not only spectrally flexible, but also the sun-angle effect is accounted for explicitly. Here, the semianalytical model developed in Lee et al. (2005b) is revised to account for the shift of phase …

Using Isotopes Of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Species And Water To Separate Sources Of Recharge In A Cave Spring, Northwestern Arkansas, Usa, Katherine J. Knierim, Erik Pollock, Phillip D. Hays
KIP Articles
Blowing Spring Cave in northwestern Arkansas is representative of cave systems in the karst of the Ozark Plateaus, and stable isotopes of water (δ18O and δ2H) and inorganic carbon (δ13C) were used to quantify soil-water, bedrock-matrix water, and precipitation contributions to cave-spring flow during storm events to understand controls on cave water quality. Water samples from recharge-zone soils and the cave were collected from March to May 2012 to implement a multicomponent hydrograph separation approach using δ18O and δ2H of water and dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13C–DIC). During baseflow, median δ2H and δ18O compositions were –41.6‰ and –6.2‰ for soil water …
