Paleoreconstruction Of Organic Carbon Inputs To An Oxbow Lake In The Mississippi River Watershed: Effects Of Dam Construction And Land Use Change On Regional Inputs, Thomas S. Bianchi, Valier Galy, Brad E. Rosenheim, Michael Shields, Xingqian Cui, Peter Van Metre

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We use a dated sediment core from Lake Whittington (USA) in the lower Mississippi River to reconstruct linkages in the carbon cycling and fluvial sediment dynamics over the past 80 years. Organic carbon (OC) sources were characterized using bulk (δ13C, ramped pyrolysis-oxidation (PyrOx) 14C, δ15N, and TN:OC ratios) and compound-specific (lignin phenols and fatty acids, including δ13C and 14C of the fatty acids) analyses. Damming of the Missouri River in the 1950s, other hydrological modifications to the river, and soil conservation measures resulted in reduced net OC export, in spite of increasing …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Petaling Jaya is a Malaysian city in the Petaling district of Selangor, over the past few years it has witnessed a dramatic growth in terms of population size and geographical importance. This has led to constant congestions throughout the city. A significant reduction in the annual cost of road accidents, congestion, energy consumption and pollution in the city can be obtained by implementing a modal shift from private vehicles to public transport. Urban transportation problems are highlighted in this study as well the factors that influence the use of private and public transportation. A survey was carried out on users …

A Hominin Femur With Archaic Affinities From The Late Pleistocene Of Southwest China, Darren Curnoe, Xueping Ji, Wu Liu

KIP Articles

The number of Late Pleistocene hominin species and the timing of their extinction are issues receiving renewed attention following genomic evidence for interbreeding between the ancestors of some living humans and archaic taxa. Yet, major gaps in the fossil record and uncertainties surrounding the age of key fossils have meant that these questions remain poorly understood. Here we describe and compare a highly unusual femur from Late Pleistocene sediments at Maludong (Yunnan), Southwest China, recovered along with cranial remains that exhibit a mixture of anatomically modern human and archaic traits. Our studies show that the Maludong femur has affinities to …

Long-Term Distribution Patterns Of Chlorophyll-A Concentration In China’S Largest Freshwater Lake: Meris Full-Resolution Observations With A Practical Approach, Lian Feng, Chuanmin Hu, Xingxing Han, Xiaoling Chen, Lin Qi

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A new empirical Chl-a algorithm has been developed and validated for the largest freshwater lake of China (Poyang Lake) using a normalized green-red difference index (NGRDI), where the uncertainty was estimated to be <45% for Chl-a ranging between 1.3 and 10.5 mg·m−3. The combined approach of using the NGRDI algorithm and atmospherically-corrected Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) data showed an advantage over other popular approaches. The algorithm was then applied to 325 carefully-selected MERIS full-resolution (300-m) scenes between 2003 and 2012, with pixels of extreme turbidity (NGRDI < 0.06, corresponding to >~25 mg·L−1 total suspended sediments or TSS) masked. The long-term Chl-a distribution showed significant spatial gradient and temporal variability, …

Luminescence Dating Of Fluvial Deposits In The Rock Shelter Of Cueva Antón, Spain, Burow Christoph, Martin Kehl, Alexandra Hilgers

KIP Articles

The fluvial sediments at Cueva Antón, a Middle Palaeolithic rock shelter located in the valley of the River Mula (Southeast Spain), produced abundant lithic assemblages of Mousterian affinities. Radiocarbon dates are available for the upper part of the archaeological succession, while for the middle to lower parts chronometric data have been missing. Here we present luminescence dating results for these parts of the succession. Quartz OSL on small aliquots and single grain measurements yield ages ranging from 69 ± 7 ka to 82 ± 8 ka with a weighted mean of 72 ± 4 ka for sub-complexes AS2 to AS5. …

Nuevas Excavaciones En Cueva Del Medio. Procesos De Formación De La Cueva Y Avances En Los Estudios De Interacción Entre Cazadores-Recolectores Y Fauna Extinta (Pleistoceno Final, Patagonia Meridional), Fabiana M. Martin, Dominique Todisco, Joël Rodet

KIP Articles

New studies at Cueva del Medio, Ultima Esperanza, Chile, are presented. Some of the main cave formation and sediment accumulation processes were identified. New excavations indicated that extinct fauna was using the cave at least since 14,000 radiocarbon years BP. Human occupations at the end of the Pleistocene were confirmed with new findings and radiocarbon dates. The importance of extinct fauna in the human subsistence was less important than previously sustained.

Disparities In Temporal And Geographic Patterns Of Declining Heart Disease Mortality By Race And Sex In The United States, Adam S. Vaughan, Harrison Quick, Elizabeth B. Pathak, Michael R. Kramer, Michele Casper

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Background: Examining small‐area differences in the strength of declining heart disease mortality by race and sex provides important context for current racial and geographic disparities and identifies localities that could benefit from targeted interventions. We identified and described temporal trends in declining county‐level heart disease mortality by race, sex, and geography between 1973 and 2010.

Methods and Results: Using a Bayesian hierarchical model, we estimated age‐adjusted mortality with diseases of the heart listed as the underlying cause for 3099 counties. County‐level percentage declines were calculated by race and sex for 3 time periods (1973–1985, 1986–1997, 1998–2010). Strong declines were statistically …

Fossil Population Structure And Mortality Analysis Of The Cave Bears From Urşilor Cave, North-Western Romania, Marius Robu

KIP Articles

Research in cave bear palaeobiology focusing on population structure and mortality analysis may improve our understanding regarding the ecology of this species which vanished at the end of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3, prior to Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), if assessed populations are large enough. Such population is available in Urşilor Cave, from north-western Romania, known as one of the most rich and complex European MIS3 cave bear sites. From the palaeontological excavation, situated at the lower level of the cave (= Scientific Reserve), more than 210 cave bear isolated lower molars, 160 mandibles and almost 180 canines were extracted …

Muckraking And C.O.B.Y (Cry Of Black Youth): Uncovering A History Of Organizing In Belle Glade, Raymond A. Hamilton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines a local activist group in the rural town of Belle Glade, Florida during the late 1960s and early 1970s. This research falls in line with many New Black Power studies. These New Black Power studies challenge existing notions of the Black Power and Civil Rights eras and their relationship to one another. It challenges the time frames, geography and ideology of both of the eras. This case study of a the group in Belle Glade is not the first to examine the similarities of the Black Power and Civil Rights eras, where many groups who affiliated with …

Documenting Perceived Effectiveness Of Community-Based Health Promotion Coalitions: A Grounded Theory Approach, Alyssa Brooke Mayer Jan 2015

Documenting Perceived Effectiveness Of Community-Based Health Promotion Coalitions: A Grounded Theory Approach, Alyssa Brooke Mayer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Community coalitions with public health-related missions are formal, semi-permanent, action-oriented partnerships comprised of community members, representatives of government agencies, policymakers, and academic partners. Despite their potential to promote sustainable change, coalitions have had mixed success in effecting long-term improvements in community health. There is a need to assist them in developing strategies for improving and sustaining their functionality. The purpose of this study was to improve understanding of the elements of coalition success and sustainability that are vital to health-related community-based participatory research.

Methods: Although the literature describes coalition functions for effecting sustainable programs and policies, most research reports …

Ecological Sanitation In Uganda: Promotion Through Demonstration Facilities And Potential For Ascaris Reduction By Free Ammonia Inactivation Using Stored Urine, John Thomas Trimmer Jan 2015

Ecological Sanitation In Uganda: Promotion Through Demonstration Facilities And Potential For Ascaris Reduction By Free Ammonia Inactivation Using Stored Urine, John Thomas Trimmer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As Uganda works to transform itself into an industrialized, middle-income country in the coming decades, the country is faced with a number of problematic trends that could hinder this transition. High population growth and urbanization are quickly forcing small towns to deal with issues of limited space and the aesthetic conditions within sanitation systems, while declining soil fertility in surrounding rural areas calls into question the future nutritional security of the growing population. Ecological Sanitation (Eco-San) systems, which are designed to recover nutrients from human excreta, may help to address these trends.

Improved sanitation coverage in Uganda is currently estimated …

The purpose of this thesis was to identify the different patterns of food consumption across space and time at Liangchengzhen, a Longshan (ca. 2600-1900 B.C.) site located in Shandong Province, China. The primary hypothesis of the research contended that evidence of increasing social inequality with respect to food consumption would be found from early to late phases at Liangchengzhen. In addition, rice and meat from mammals, especially pigs, were hypothesized as the most likely types of prestigious foods for daily and ritual activities. Fish and marine foods in general were hypothesized to be foods that average households could obtain since …

A Composite Spatial Model Incorporating Groundwater Vulnerability And Environmental Disturbance To Guide Land Management, Johanna L. Kovarik Jan 2015

A Composite Spatial Model Incorporating Groundwater Vulnerability And Environmental Disturbance To Guide Land Management, Johanna L. Kovarik

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research has long recognized and studied the dynamics of groundwater processes. More recently, groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs) are being recognized for their diversity and vulnerability to anthropogenic impact. Groundwater in karst landscapes presents a distinctive situation where flow through the subsurface often moves rapidly on the scale of days and weeks as opposed to years or millennia in other systems. This distinctive situation of karst systems and their vulnerability to human impacts necessitate an integrated and multifaceted approach for the management of these important resources. However, development of such an approach is complicated by the difficulty of obtaining detailed data …

Glaciological Applications Of Terrestrial Radar Interferometry, Denis Voytenko Jan 2015

Glaciological Applications Of Terrestrial Radar Interferometry, Denis Voytenko

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Terrestrial Radar Interferometry (TRI) is a relatively new ground-based technique that combines the precision and spatial resolution of satellite interferometry with the temporal resolution of GPS. Although TRI has been applied to a variety of fields including bridge and landslide monitoring, it is ideal for studies of the highly-dynamic terminal zones of marine-terminating glaciers, some of which are known to have variable velocities related to calving and/or ocean-forced melting. My TRI instrument is the Gamma Portable Radar Interferometer, which operates at 17.2 GHz (1.74 cm wavelength), has two receiving antennas for DEM (digital elevation model) generation, and images the scenes …

Armenian Crafts In The Ottoman Empire: Cultural Exchange And Armenian Identity, Nora Emma Khatcherian Jan 2015

Armenian Crafts In The Ottoman Empire: Cultural Exchange And Armenian Identity, Nora Emma Khatcherian

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Current studies on Armenian identity trace Armenian identity to specific historical events, such as the adoption of Christianity and the creation of the Armenian alphabet. These studies, and the importance they place on Armenian independence, ignore the experience of people who lived under foreign domination, yet still considered themselves to be Armenian, such as those living in the Ottoman Empire. The millet system of the Ottoman Empire sorted Armenians into a distinct group, much like current researchers’ conceptions of Armenian identity as essential. This thesis argues that crafts produced and reproduced identity for Armenians within the millet system. The genocide …
