Large-Scale And High-Resolution 3-D Cave Mapping By Terrestrial Laser Scanning: A Case Study Of The Domica Cave, Slovakia, Michal Gallay, Ján Kaňuk, Zdenko Hochmuth, John D. Meneely, Jaroslav Hofierka, Vladimír Sedlák Aug 2015

Large-Scale And High-Resolution 3-D Cave Mapping By Terrestrial Laser Scanning: A Case Study Of The Domica Cave, Slovakia, Michal Gallay, Ján Kaňuk, Zdenko Hochmuth, John D. Meneely, Jaroslav Hofierka, Vladimír Sedlák

International Journal of Speleology

Mapping and modelling the complicated geometry of caves is a challenging task that has traditionally been undertaken by tacheometric surveying methods. These methods are excellent for capturing the general shape of a cave system but they are not suitable for high-speed, high-resolution mapping of complex surfaces found in this environment. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technologies can acquire millions of points represented by 3-D coordinates, at very high spatial densities on complex multifaceted surfaces within minutes. In the last few years, advances in measurement speed, reduction in size / cost and increased portability of this technology has revolutionised the collection of …

Efficacy Of Visual Surveys For White-Nose Syndrome At Bat Hibernacula, A. F. Janicki, W. F. Frick, A. M. Kilpatrick Jul 2015

Efficacy Of Visual Surveys For White-Nose Syndrome At Bat Hibernacula, A. F. Janicki, W. F. Frick, A. M. Kilpatrick

KIP Articles

White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) is an epizootic disease in hibernating bats caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. Surveillance for P. destructans at bat hibernacula consists primarily of visual surveys of bats, collection of potentially infected bats, and submission of these bats for laboratory testing. Cryptic infections (bats that are infected but display no visual signs of fungus) could lead to the mischaracterization of the infection status of a site and the inadvertent spread of P. destructans. We determined the efficacy of visual detection of P. destructans by examining visual signs and molecular detection of P. destructans on 928 bats of six …

Underground Fieldwork – A Cultural And Social History Of Cave Cartography And Surveying Instruments In The 19th And At The Beginning Of The 20th Century, Johannes Mattes Jul 2015

Underground Fieldwork – A Cultural And Social History Of Cave Cartography And Surveying Instruments In The 19th And At The Beginning Of The 20th Century, Johannes Mattes

International Journal of Speleology

At the turn of the 20th century, the practical examination of caves went through a radical change. Governmental organizations and private clubs were founded in an attempt to establish speleology as an independent academic subject. In contrast to earlier cave visitors, travelers began entering underground areas and attributing the names of “explorers” or “researchers” to themselves. Fieldwork—especially cave surveying and cartography—became common practice in speleology and such work provided important clues on speleogenesis, which was a controversial issue in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the fact that speleologists began separating themselves from ordinary …

The Math You Need, When You Need It (Tmyn): Leveling The Playing Field, Jennifer M. Wenner, Eric M. D. Baer Jul 2015

The Math You Need, When You Need It (Tmyn): Leveling The Playing Field, Jennifer M. Wenner, Eric M. D. Baer

Numeracy

The Math You Need, When You Need It (TMYN) is a set of online tutorials designed to help students develop and review mathematical skills that are applied in undergraduate geoscience courses. We present results of a three-year study of more than 4000 students in 106 geoscience courses at a variety of post-secondary schools who were assigned TMYN tutorials as supplemental mathematics instruction. Changes in student scores from pre- to post-test suggest that the support provided by programs such as TMYN can begin to reduce the gap between mathematically well-prepared and underprepared students; in essence, TMYN levels the quantitative playing field …

La Balouta Exhumed Karst: A Roman Gold-Mine-Derived Landscape Within The Las Médulas Unesco World Heritage Site (Spain), José M. Redondo-Vega, Eduardo Alonso-Herrero, Javier Santos-González, Rosa B. González-Gutiérrez, Amelia Gómez-Villar Jul 2015

La Balouta Exhumed Karst: A Roman Gold-Mine-Derived Landscape Within The Las Médulas Unesco World Heritage Site (Spain), José M. Redondo-Vega, Eduardo Alonso-Herrero, Javier Santos-González, Rosa B. González-Gutiérrez, Amelia Gómez-Villar

International Journal of Speleology

The La Balouta Valley, located in the extreme SW region of the Las Médulas Natural Monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site (León, Spain), is one of the largest gold-mining sites developed by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago when excavating a thick series of red Miocene sediments in the area. The main determining feature of the La Balouta Valley, especially if we compare it with the Sil River Valley of which it is a tributary, is its status of a non-functional valley. It is a dry paleo-valley with a flat bottom and is characterized by limited surface water runoff …

Construction And Destruction Of Mont Pelée Volcano: Volumes And Rates Constrained From A Geomorphological Model Of Evolution, Aurélie Germa, Pierre Lahitte, Xavier Quidelleur

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This study presents long‐term volumes and construction rates for the Mont Conil‐Mont Pelée volcano and rate estimates at which volcanic activity creates relief. An algorithm, ShapeVolc, is used to numerically model topographic surfaces. Volcano morphology is analyzed using current digital elevation model in combination with mapped geology to produce 10 paleotopographies at the end of four constructional stages and three destructional events. Volumes of each constructional stage were estimated at about 35.2 km3, 26.2 km3, 8.3 km3, and 2.5 km3 for a total cumulative erupted volume of 72.2 km3. We estimate …

A Milk And Ochre Paint Mixture Used 49,000 Years Ago At Sibudu, South Africa, Paola Villa, Luca Pollarolo, Ilaria Degano

KIP Articles

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, proteomic and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) analyses of residue on a stone flake from a 49,000 year-old layer of Sibudu (South Africa) indicate a mixture of ochre and casein from milk, likely obtained by killing a lactating wild bovid. Ochre powder production and use are documented in Middle Stone Age South African sites but until now there has been no evidence of the use of milk as a binder. Our analyses show that this ochre-based mixture was neither a hafting adhesive nor a residue left after treating animal skins, but a liquid mixture …

A Large-Scale Simulation Model To Assess Karstic Groundwater Recharge Over Europe And The Mediterranean, A. Hartmann, T. Gleeson, R. Rosolem Jun 2015

A Large-Scale Simulation Model To Assess Karstic Groundwater Recharge Over Europe And The Mediterranean, A. Hartmann, T. Gleeson, R. Rosolem

KIP Articles

Karst develops through the dissolution of carbonate rock and is a major source of groundwater contributing up to half of the total drinking water supply in some European countries. Previous approaches to model future water availability in Europe are either too-small scale or do not incorporate karst processes, i.e. preferential flow paths. This study presents the first simulations of groundwater recharge in all karst regions in Europe with a parsimonious karst hydrology model. A novel parameter confinement strategy combines a priori information with recharge-related observations (actual evapotranspiration and soil moisture) at locations across Europe while explicitly identifying uncertainty in the …

Translations Of Climate Change: Perspectives From A Florida Suburb, Christopher Noel Metzger Jun 2015

Translations Of Climate Change: Perspectives From A Florida Suburb, Christopher Noel Metzger

Suburban Sustainability

A disconnect exists between the scientific knowledge of global climate change, arguably the most important issue of our time, and the publics’ interpretations and acceptance of that knowledge. Without broad-based public support for mitigation policies and adaption strategies, irreversible climate “tipping points” could be breached, according to some of the most prominent climate scientists, over the course of the next few decades. This study examines why the preponderance of scientific evidence surrounding climate change has not produced a sea change in public perceptions of the climate change problem consistent with the dire projections of climate science. This cognitive disjuncture is …

Geographical Applications Of Performance Measures For Transit Network Directness, Young-Jae Lee, Jung Yoon Choi, Jeong Whon Yu, Keechoo Choi Jun 2015

Geographical Applications Of Performance Measures For Transit Network Directness, Young-Jae Lee, Jung Yoon Choi, Jeong Whon Yu, Keechoo Choi

Journal of Public Transportation

This research developed a geographical presentation method to show which areas of the city need to be improved in terms of the directness of transit service using two measures, Degree of Competitiveness and Degree of Circuity, which were developed in the first author’s previous research. In this research, the directness of transit networks in five cities in Korea was analyzed and compared as an example and demonstrated geographically. The results show that although more populated cities are likely to provide more direct transit service than less populated cities, population density affects the transit network directness more. Also, this research showed …

A European Model For Public Transport Authorities In Small And Medium Urban Areas, Steve Wright Jun 2015

A European Model For Public Transport Authorities In Small And Medium Urban Areas, Steve Wright

Journal of Public Transportation

Public Transport Authorities (PTAs) are well-established in large urban areas. These dedicated authorities act in the public interest to ensure that a well-functioning, integrated transport system operates within their territory. Within Europe, economic pressures and changes in regulation to encourage more competition are providing the catalyst for municipalities/authorities of all sizes to review the structure under which transport is managed and provided in their jurisdictions and to consider the suitability of establishing a PTA. Based on findings from case studies in eight small and medium urban areas across seven European countries, it is clear that although user needs remain at …

A Scientometric Analysis Of Public Transport Research, Leonard Heilig, Stefan Voß

Journal of Public Transportation

Public transport research involves a lot of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research applying methods, techniques, and technologies to investigate, regulate, and advance public transport. The importance of research in this area has led to a huge amount of publications in recent years. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive scientometric analysis of related literature published in 2009–2013 to empirically explore the consistence, focus areas, and key contributors of public transport research from a meta-perspective, providing novel insights into publication patterns, major topics, research impact, and productivity by focusing on short-term developments. As such, the results of this study provide a novel …

Countering Insurgency And The Myth Of “The Cause”, Daniel G. Cox, Alex Ryan Jun 2015

Countering Insurgency And The Myth Of “The Cause”, Daniel G. Cox, Alex Ryan

Journal of Strategic Security

It is possible for an insurgency to develop from a single cause, for the insurgents to identify and communicate this unifying cause to the population, and for the insurgents to remain steadfastly focused even as counterinsurgents undermine their organization and redress the cause. But often the case that there is no single cause, that popular support is mobilized by appealing to multiple motivations, and that by the time counterinsurgents resolve the initial grievance, the insurgency has found alternative justifications to mobilize popular support. Since insurgent leadership is often competent and adaptive, it would be wise to consider the latter scenario …

Geographically Isolated Wetlands: Rethinking A Misnomer, David M. Mushet, Aram J. K. Calhoun, Laurie C. Alexander, Matthew J. Cohen, Edward S. Dekeyser, Laurie Fowler, Charles R. Lane, Mark C. Rains, Susan C. Walls

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We explore the category “geographically isolated wetlands” (GIWs; i.e., wetlands completely surrounded by uplands at the local scale) as used in the wetland sciences. As currently used, the GIW category (1) hampers scientific efforts by obscuring important hydrological and ecological differences among multiple wetland functional types, (2) aggregates wetlands in a manner not reflective of regulatory and management information needs, (3) implies wetlands so described are in some way “isolated,” an often incorrect implication, (4) is inconsistent with more broadly used and accepted concepts of “geographic isolation,” and (5) has injected unnecessary confusion into scientific investigations and discussions. Instead, we …

Calculus: The Board Game, Nicholas C. Mazza Apr 2015

Calculus: The Board Game, Nicholas C. Mazza

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This thesis explores the creation and evolution of an original calculus board game. To chart the evolution of the game, participant feedback was gathered over multiple developmental game phases. To see how well the board game could teach calculus, pre and post test data was gathered during later game development phases to see if individual participants showed any improvements in their abilities to solve calculus problems. The results showed minor improvements in calculus abilities regardless of prior calculus knowledge. Further game testing needs to be done to fully evaluate the effectiveness of this calculus board game.

Longitudinal Profile And Sediment Mobility As Geomorphic Tools To Interpret The History Of A Fluviokarst Stream System, John Woodside, Eric Wade Peterson, Toby Dogwiler Apr 2015

Longitudinal Profile And Sediment Mobility As Geomorphic Tools To Interpret The History Of A Fluviokarst Stream System, John Woodside, Eric Wade Peterson, Toby Dogwiler

International Journal of Speleology

The complex drainage systems within karst settings can result in atypical longitudinal profiles. Features, such as cave entrances, can be expressed as anomalous ‘bumps’ in the longitudinal profile of a stream if downcutting has continued upstream of the area in which the water is pirated to the subsurface. Horn Hollow, a fluviokarst valley located in Carter Caves State Park Resort in northeastern Kentucky, was examined for these types of features. The objectives of this study were to determine if sediment mobility can be used as a proxy for anomalous areas along the profile of the valley and if detailed cross-sections …
