Spatial Distribution Patterns Of Mistletoe (Antidaphne Viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae, And Phoradendron Undulatum: Viscaceae) On Psidium Guajava (Mrytaceae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Matthew Greenfield Dec 2003

Spatial Distribution Patterns Of Mistletoe (Antidaphne Viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae, And Phoradendron Undulatum: Viscaceae) On Psidium Guajava (Mrytaceae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Matthew Greenfield

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Spatial distributions of mistletoe are noticeably clustered but unexamined in Monteverde, Costa Rica. To better understand their spatial structure, I examined the dispersion of two species of epiphytic mistletoe (Antidaphne viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae and Phoradendron undulatum: Viscaceae) within and between host trees. Six sites on one hill in Cañitas, Costa Rica were surveyed for data relating to dispersion structure (nearest neighbor distance and frequency within host trees). Additional study was done on the spatial dispersion on the host tree Psidium guajava, and it was found to have clustered dispersions. Indices of dispersion and tests comparing observed results to Poisson distributions showed …

Effects Of Tree Buttresses On Nutrient Availability And Macroinvertebrate Species Richness, December 2003, Alyson P. Mack Dec 2003

Effects Of Tree Buttresses On Nutrient Availability And Macroinvertebrate Species Richness, December 2003, Alyson P. Mack

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study tested the hypothesis that buttress microhabitats collect more leaf litter and have greater macroinvertebrate species richness, thereby increasing the leaf decomposition rate and providing more nutrient rich soil for the tree. Leaf litter deposition and decomposition rates, soil fertility (pH, [N], [P], |K]), and macroinvertebrate species richness (S, Smarg) were compared between microhabitats in buttressed and nonbuttressed trees and open areas in the lower montane cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. Results showed no significant difference between microhabitat types for soil pH levels (Kruskall-Wallis test, H= 3.188), soil [N] (Kruskall-Wallis test, H= 3.388), soil [P] (Kruskall-Wallis test, H= …

Frequency Distributions Of Escherichia Coli Subtypes In Various Fecal Sources Over Time And Geographical Space: Application To Bacterial Source Tracking Methods, Matthew A. Anderson Nov 2003

Frequency Distributions Of Escherichia Coli Subtypes In Various Fecal Sources Over Time And Geographical Space: Application To Bacterial Source Tracking Methods, Matthew A. Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Bacterial source tracking (BST) methods often involve the use of phenotypic or genotypic fingerprinting techniques to compare indicator bacteria such as Escherichia coli isolated from unknown sources against a library of fingerprints from indicator bacteria found in the feces of various known source animals. The predictive capability of a library is based in part on how well the library isolates reflect the true population diversity of indicator bacteria that can potentially impact a water body. The purpose of this study was to compare the behavior of E. coli population structures in the feces of humans, beef cattle and horses across …

Special Collections and University Archives Legacy Finding Aids: All Items

George Kell Reid, Jr., a longtime Florida resident, inspired many students to enter the field of marine biology. For over two decades, he taught students at Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College). This collection of research articles, unpublished seminar papers, and notes record Reid's strong interest in the limnology of Lake Maggiore and marine life in Boca Ciega Bay and other estuarine environments along the Pinellas peninsula. These materials, donated in March 2003 by Dr. John G. Schwede, contain no access restrictions.

Population Structure Of The Gopher Tortise (Gopherus Polyphemus) In Florida, Using Microsatellites, Tonia S. Schwartz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) population sizes have drastically declined in the past 100 years. Much of this decline has been attributed to past human predation, to habitat loss from human development, and potentially to the recently discovered upper respiratory tract disease. An understanding of the genetic structure among populations is critical for the long-term success of relocation and other management strategies. This research focuses on the development of a suite of genetic markers and the answers they provided to questions concerning present day population genetics and its use in management. In addition, this study provides inference on historical …

An Examination Of Modulation Of Feeding Behavior In The Nurse Shark Ginglymostoma Cirratum (Bonaterre 1788), Michael Matott Apr 2003

An Examination Of Modulation Of Feeding Behavior In The Nurse Shark Ginglymostoma Cirratum (Bonaterre 1788), Michael Matott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The ability of an organism to modulate its feeding behavior is an important focus of feeding ecology studies. Modulation is the ability to distinctly and consistently alter a behavior to accommodate different stimuli. The goal of this study was to examine the ability of the nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum to modulate its food capture behavior with different sizes and types of food items. This was carried out through kinematic and electromyographic analysis.

Eight sub-adult specimens of G. cirratum were filmed feeding on two different food types (squid and fish) and sizes (gape size and larger than gape size). Filming consisted …

Factors Affecting Arthropod Loads On Nectivorous Phyllostomatidae, September 2002, Jason Majewski Sep 2002

Factors Affecting Arthropod Loads On Nectivorous Phyllostomatidae, September 2002, Jason Majewski

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Bats are known to host a wide range of both parasitic and non-parasitic arthropods on or around the pelage and wing membranes. The purpose of this study is to assess these macro and microscopic arthropod communities living on nectivorous bats, in an attempt to find patterns of arthropod load frequencies between sexes and among species. Bats were mist-netted at the Monteverde Hummingbird Gallery, for seven nights, with a total of 86 individuals examined from six different species. Macroparasites were counted and recorded; microparasites were then extracted from the bat by means of Scotch tape and aspiration. Analysis of Variance showed …
