Supporting Community-Oriented Educational Change: Case And Analysis, Linda Mabry, Laura Ettinger

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

A study of a federally funded program to develop and implement community-oriented social studies curricula and curriculum-based assessments grounds cautions for educational change initiatives. In this case, despite the project director's stated intent to support teachers' desire for instruction regarding local culture and history, top-down support for classroom-level change evidenced insensitivity. The U.S. Military As An Informational Environment, Eric C. Jones Jan 1999

The U.S. Military As An Informational Environment, Eric C. Jones

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The historical development of military organization in the United States has been strongly influenced by the desire to make more precise information available to decision-makers at appropriate levels in the chain of command for national security and warfare. By placing the U.S. military in national and international contexts, this paper proposes that its historical development results from the complex informational needs critical to the political-economic evolution of the State. Specifically, technology, strategy, chain of command and battlefield tactics increasingly require improvements in information quantity, quality and analysis.

Book, Race, Religion, And Ethnicity In Disaster Recovery, 1986, Robert C. Bolin, Patricia A. Bolton

Natural Hazards Center Collection

"This study grows out of work that each of the authors have previously done on the dynamics, in various social contexts, of family recovery from disasters. In those earlier studies, the importance of ethnicity and race was left largely unexplored. Our previous research did note the importance of culture, age, and social class as determinants of patterns of aid utilization. To that mix of social variables we now add race and ethnicity (and/or religious affiliation) as additional pieces in the puzzle of family recovery."
