Restriction Or Resistance? French Colonial Educational Development In Cambodia, Thomas Clayton Dec 1995

Restriction Or Resistance? French Colonial Educational Development In Cambodia, Thomas Clayton

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

By 1944, after eight decades of French colonial control, only a small percentage of eligible students in Cambodia attended French schools. Several scholars argue on the basis of such evidence that the French purposefully restricted education for Cambodians in order first to achieve and then to maintain power in the colony. This article examines educational development in Cambodia during the French colonial period and concludes that the lack of Cambodian educational participation stemmed from Cambodian resistance, rather than French planning. French educational reforms sought to understand Cambodian resistance, to overcome it, and to draw Cambodians into schools dedicated to the …

Integrative Paths To The Past: Paleoanthropological Advances, Pamela R. Willoughby

KIP Articles

F. Clark Howell retired from the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley in 1991. At Berkeley, and earlier while at the University of Chicago, he was responsible for training a number of specialists in human biocultural evolution, or palaeoanthropology. In fact, Howell is credited with developing the concept of palaeoanthropology (and defining the term itself); he certainly created the framework for this integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to human evolution. For his retirement, former students and colleagues collaborated to produce this volume. Some of the papers were presented at a one day symposium reviewing the highlights of Howell's career along …

Getting A Grip On The Good Life: Essay Review Of Alan Deyoung's The Life And Death Of A Rural American High School: Farewell Little Nanawha, Craig Howley, Paul Theobald

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Alan DeYoung's story of the circumstances surrounding the birth, growth, and death of a high school in rural West Virginia is an intellectual contribution of the first order. And Farewell Little Kanawha is certainly one of the best stories to be told by an educational researcher in recent decades. Its strength derives in large measure from DeYoung's deftness in crossing disciplinary borders. The interplay of economics, sociology, history (both oral and documentary), anthropology, and biography render this story far more compelling than most educational research. ...

My Own Drum : Activist Women Remember The 1960s And 1970s, Gina Vivinetto Jan 1995

My Own Drum : Activist Women Remember The 1960s And 1970s, Gina Vivinetto

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Being a woman in the 1960s and 1970s must have been an extraordinary thing. The times were turbulent, filled with chaos and change. The globe pulsed with mayhem and newness. Women were grappling with an emerging feminist movement, getting their heads together, figuring out where they stood on issues like the Equal Rights Amendment, the Pill, and Roe v. Wade, trying to liberate themselves, men, everybody. Race relations were being seen for what they were: strained, fake, embittered. Women were making connections between racism and sexism, pointing an accusatory finger at something called a "patriarchy."

A Community-Based Public Transportation Needs Assessment For Sun City Center, Florida, Jennifer A. Hardin Dec 1994

A Community-Based Public Transportation Needs Assessment For Sun City Center, Florida, Jennifer A. Hardin

CUTR Research Reports

Many retirement communities are located outside of metropolitan areas. Their locations complicate the issue of providing public transportation services to their residents. Sun City Center is an unincorporated retirement community 16 miles outside of Tampa, Florida. A community-based needs assessment was conducted to provide the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HARTline) and the community of Sun City Center with information regarding the perceived public transportation needs that exist in this retirement community.

The three objectives of this community-based needs assessment were: (1) to assess the perceived transportation needs of the local residents; (2) to facilitate greater communication and coordination among …
