Hurricane Preparedness Of Community-Dwelling Dementia Caregivers In South Florida, Janelle J. Christensen Mar 2012

Hurricane Preparedness Of Community-Dwelling Dementia Caregivers In South Florida, Janelle J. Christensen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is to explore how informal caregivers for people with dementia (PWD), who are community dwelling (i.e., not in nursing homes), prepare and plan for disasters. The research site is a particularly hurricane-prone region of Florida, second only to New Orleans in its vulnerability. An underlying assumption of this research is that caregivers for PWD have to plan and anticipate problems that are unique to their role. The rationale for the study described here is that disaster planning and mitigation save lives (Tengs et al. 1995), but there is little or no literature on disaster planning …

Renegotiating Identities, Cultures And Histories: Oppositional Looking In Shelley Niro's "This Land Is Mime Land", Jennifer Danielle Mccall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My master's thesis explores the photographic series "This Land is Mime Land," which Shelley Niro made in 1992. Despite this work's complex form and structure, there are currently no sustained studies of this series alone, or books solely dedicated to Niro's art. Instead, "Mime Land" is often discussed in compilations that address a number of Native artists, Western feminist practices, or multiple works in Niro's oeuvre. My thesis fills this gap, as I closely investigate how "Mime Land" asks the viewer to look at visual culture, histories and Niro herself. Bell hooks's definition of the "oppositional gaze" - meaning a …

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence Jan 2012

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cemeteries are microcosms of society bound together in sacred spaces. As manifestations of social mores, cemeteries allow anthropologists to obtain information on social development and structure. Where noninvasive study is mandated, crucial methods of interpretation include studies of landscape design, floral incorporation, grave marker design and development, and grave mementos. This thesis discusses these and other methods as they are used to infer group mores. It also indicates how information acquired from methods can be adversely affected by outside influences, such as vandalism, weathering, and replotting. This thesis adds to known methods of cemetery research another unbiased, noninvasive tool that …

Modeling Livestock's Contribution To The Duration Of The Village Farming Lifeway In Pre-State Societies, Brandon M. Gabler Jan 2012

Modeling Livestock's Contribution To The Duration Of The Village Farming Lifeway In Pre-State Societies, Brandon M. Gabler

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This study expands previous research by Carol Raish (1992) on duration and stability of village farming societies in which she argued that the presence of domesticated livestock enhances the stability of pre-state farming societies. The study uses methods developed by Lewis Binford in Constructing Frames of Reference (2001) and contributes to the growing modeling literature using environmental frames of reference to understand archaeological sequences. The 16 archaeological sequences in Raish’s study and standardized environmental variables are used to generate regression equations to project duration, while discriminant function equations are used to project presence or absence of domesticated animals for a …

Local Institutions For Subsistence Harvesting In Western Alaska: Assessing Their Adaptive Role In The Context Of Global Change, Colin Thor West, Connor Ross Jan 2012

Local Institutions For Subsistence Harvesting In Western Alaska: Assessing Their Adaptive Role In The Context Of Global Change, Colin Thor West, Connor Ross

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article identifies key types of local institutions rural Alaska Native communities use to manage subsistence resources such as fish, game, and edible plants. Local institutions are the informal rules and norms communities use to manage these and other natural resources. Other scholars have mostly discussed them in the context of how they help subsistence users cope with ecological fluctuations in the abundance of certain species. The study presented here discusses them within a larger context of social and economic change. These local institutions were identified based on personal interviews with 62 active subsistence users in six different Yup’ik communities …

Population Change In And Around Protected Areas, Lucas Joppa Jan 2012

Population Change In And Around Protected Areas, Lucas Joppa

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Two global analyses of human population growth near protected areas seek to go beyond case studies to generalize the impact human populations have on nearby protected areas and rural development. Answering these questions is important for both human welfare and biodiversity conservation. However, as author of one of those studies, I would argue that human migrations operate at multiple spatial and temporal scales, ensuring that any hope for a globally coherent signal is premature at best or misdirected at worst.

Traditional Native American Foods: Stories From Northern Plains Elders, Sarah E. Colby, Leander R. Mcdonald, Greg Adkison Jan 2012

Traditional Native American Foods: Stories From Northern Plains Elders, Sarah E. Colby, Leander R. Mcdonald, Greg Adkison

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

An understanding of traditional Native American food patterns is needed to develop efforts for decreasing chronic disease that include traditional Native American foods in culturally relevant ways. Via oral history-focused in-depth interviews, I explored traditional food and dietary practices among Native American Elders in the Northern Plains. In addition to staple foods discussed, five primary themes included hunger, sharing, gathering, medicine, and religion. Barriers to use of Native foods primarily concerned knowledge, convenience and availability.

Framing Non-Whites And Producing Second-Class Citizens In France And Portugal, Bernd Reiter Jan 2012

Framing Non-Whites And Producing Second-Class Citizens In France And Portugal, Bernd Reiter

Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications

The quality of contemporary democracies hinges on the breadth and depth of the citizenship regimes on which democracy ultimately rests. This article argues that, to assess citizenship, two important dimensions are of crucial interest, namely to what extent formal citizens are able to live and practice substantive citizenship roles and, secondly, how access to citizenship rights is used by different societal groups in order to defend privilege. Having conducted a comparative case study of Portugal and France, I now argue that political elites are contributing to a framing of non-whites as foreigners and immigrants because it serves their purpose and …

Tourism, Persistence, And Change: Sherpa Spirituality And Place In Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) National Park And Buffer Zone, Nepal, Jeremy Spoon

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Ecotourism and cultural tourism are emerging as vehicles for many of the world’s indigenous peoples to integrate into the global market economy. The ecological knowledge and understanding of these societies may in turn be affected by these nascent industries. As part of shifting human-environment relationships, tourism can influence place-based spirituality. In this manuscript, I describe research on how tourism affected Khumbu Sherpa place-based spiritual values in Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park and Buffer Zone, Nepal. As Tibetan Buddhists, the Sherpa embodied dual overlapping conceptions of sacred landscape that connected people to place in some environmentally sustainable ways. Since the 1960s, …

Making Use Of Hidden Data: Towards A Database Of Weather Predictors, Karen Pennesi Jan 2012

Making Use Of Hidden Data: Towards A Database Of Weather Predictors, Karen Pennesi

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Anthropologists often have interesting and valuable data that remains ‘hidden’ because it does not fit easily into conventional academic publishing formats. This article suggests that it is worthwhile to make use of this hidden data for the benefit of other researchers and the study communities. To illustrate, the article describes initial efforts to create an online database of traditional weather prediction indicators derived from observations of the ecosystem. The database was started with descriptions of more than a thousand prediction indicators used in Northeast Brazil, which were collected as part of a survey of farmers and ‘rain prophets’. It is …

Crossing International And Research Boundaries: From Subject To Author For An Authentic Refugee Portrait, Jasenka Besic, J. Lynn Mcbrien Jan 2012

Crossing International And Research Boundaries: From Subject To Author For An Authentic Refugee Portrait, Jasenka Besic, J. Lynn Mcbrien

School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

Scholars in training, including qualitative researchers, are often cautioned about their relationship to their research participants with the notion that “getting too close” can distort findings. However, with many participants, especially those with whom issues of trust are problematic due to their personal experiences, researchers cannot gain rich data without creating an authentic and close relationship. In this longitudinal study, a female Bosnian youth and an academic researcher grapple with issues of trust, friendship, and research in an effort to determine ways to create valid research findings over years of relationship building.

“The Play’S The Thing”: Theatre As A Scholarly Meeting Ground In Age Studies, Valerie Barnes Lipscomb Jan 2012

“The Play’S The Thing”: Theatre As A Scholarly Meeting Ground In Age Studies, Valerie Barnes Lipscomb

English Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

Addressing three current critical turns in gerontology, this article proposes the theatre as a fertile ground for various theoretical angles in age studies - including the performative on and off stage, the narrative in the script and the critical questioning of age and ageism in the multiple realities of performance. Beginning from a shared site in the theatre, researchers may be able to establish greater common ground, resulting not only in multi-disciplinary efforts but also in truly interdisciplinary work. With a foundation in performance studies, this article suggests promising directions for age studies and theatre scholarship by examining three aspects …

Tzinacamoztoc, Possible Use Of A Lava Tube As A Zenithal Observatory Near Cantona Archaeological Site, Puebla, Mexico, Ramón Espinasa-Pereña, Ruth Diamant

KIP Monographs

An artificial structure was discovered under a natural skylight inside Grutas de Tzincacamóztoc, in the vicinity of the archaeological site of Cantona. The structure is made up of piled rocks, defining a pentagonal enclosure with a central mound. Detailed measurements and computer modeling allowed tracing of the sunbeam path projected on the structure and on the cave floor, particularly for dates of astronomical and/or Mesoamerican calendrical importance. This corroborates the possible prehispanic use of this site as a complex and sophisticated gnomon. Se descubrió una estructura artificial bajo un tragaluz natural en las Grutas de Tzinacamóztoc, cerca del sitio argueológico …

The El Gigante Rockshelter: Preliminary Observations On An Early To Late Holocene Occupation In Southern Honduras., Timothy E. Scheffler, Kenneth G. Hirth, George Hasemann

KIP Monographs

The El Gigante rockshelter in highland Honduras was occupied as early as 10,000 years B.P and provides information previously lacking about the earliest periods of Honduran and Central American prehistory. Three distinct cultural horizons were identified and dated at the site using conventional and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dates that correspond to the Early Archaic, the Middle Archaic, and the Formative to Classic periods. Dry conditions within the rockshelter resulted in excellent archaeological preservation across all time periods. Excavations documented a clear sequence of residential activity represented by well-defined cultural strata containing hearth and pit features as well as dense …
