The Hominin Sites And Paleolakes Drilling Project: Inferring The Environmental Context Of Human Evolution From Eastern African Rift Lake Deposits, Jonathan Wynn, J. N. Wilson

The role that climate and environmental history may have played in influencing human evolution has been the focus of considerable interest and controversy among paleoanthropologists for decades. Prior attempts to understand the environmental history side of this equation have centered around the study of outcrop sediments and fossils adjacent to where fossil hominins (ancestors or close relatives of modern humans) are found, or from the study of deep sea drill cores. However, outcrop sediments are often highly weathered and thus are unsuitable for some types of paleoclimatic records, and deep sea core records come from long distances away from the …

Online Learning Guidelines and Reports
Universities are offering more and more classes online. But students don't always have all the tools and information they need to succeed. A robust support infrastructure exists for face-to-face students, but those studying at a distance -- particularly in fully-online programs -- don't always have access to the same resources. This was the case the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, an independently-accredited part of the USF System. We decided to figure out how we could bridge this gap. Our goal was to design and build a custom, web-based solution. We believe the product we have prototyped -- and the …

Modeling Food Security, Energy, And Climate And Cultural Impacts Of A Process: The Case Study Of Shea Butter In Sub-Saharan Africa, Colleen Claire Naughton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Millions of people in the world, particularly women and people in sub-Saharan Africa, suffer from hunger and poverty. Three of the major 2015-2030 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to eliminate hunger through food security and sustainable agriculture, eradicate poverty, and achieve gender equality through women’s empowerment. Shea trees and their associated fruit and butter can play a major role in each of these three SDGs for women and their families throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Shea trees are located over a wide expanse stretching more than 5,000 kilometers across over eighteen countries in sub-Saharan Africa. These trees produce fruit that …

Predicting Genocide And Mass Atrocities, Ernesto Verdeja
Predicting Genocide And Mass Atrocities, Ernesto Verdeja
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article examines several current risk assessment and early warning models to predict genocide and mass atrocities. Risk assessment (RA) concerns a country’s long-term structural conditions (regime type, state-led discrimination, etc.) that determine overall risk for atrocities. Early warning (EW) focuses on short/midterm dynamics that can serve as triggers. The article evaluates contemporary RA and EW forecast modeling, and asks: How well can we predict mass atrocities and genocide? What are the strengths and limitations to current predictive modeling? Part I examines several quantitative (statistical) RA models and identifies several strengths and limitations in current research. Part II investigates a …

Dangerous Speech And Dangerous Ideology: An Integrated Model For Monitoring And Prevention, Jonathan Leader Maynard, Susan Benesch
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
There is considerable agreement amongst scholars and international actors that ideologies and speech play a critical role in the path of escalation towards mass atrocity crimes. Speech features prominently in the jurisprudence of the U.N. war crimes tribunal for Rwanda, for example, and in historical accounts of the months and years preceding many other genocides. Nonetheless, this is one of the most underdeveloped components of genocide and atrocity prevention, in both theory and practice. This paper draws together the authors’ independent past work on dangerous speech and the ideological dynamics of mass atrocities by offering a new integrated model to …

Digital Commons @ USF Publications
In fall 2011, the Academic Resources Unit of the University of South Florida (USF) Library officially launched Scholar Commons, an institutional repository (IR) intended to serve as a virtual showcase for USF’s research and creative energies. Scholar Commons, which can be accessed at: http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/, provides digital preservation and free open access (OA) to scholarly works produced by the USF Community. Our vision is to become a vehicle to drive research communication across academic disciplines.
Through our dedication to and outreach of scholarly communications, we have generated many positive outcomes. This report chronicles our initiatives during the 2014/2015 fiscal year …

A Decade Of Modern Cave Surveying With Terrestrial Laser Scanning: A Review Of Sensors, Method And Application Development, Idrees Mohammed Oludare, Biswajeet Pradhan
International Journal of Speleology
During the last decade, the need to survey and model caves or caverns in their correct three-dimensional geometry has increased due to two major competing motivations. One is the emergence of medium and long range terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technology that can collect high point density with unprecedented accuracy and speed, and two, the expanding sphere of multidisciplinary research in understanding the origin and development of cave, called speleogenesis. Accurate surveying of caves has always been fundamental to understanding their origin and processes that lead to their current state and as well provide tools and information to predict future. Several …

Effect Of Gender, Ethnicity And Age Of Patient On Size Of Teeth And Overall Health Of Teeth: An Analysis Of Panoramic X-Rays, Alexandra Dubinina
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The objective of this study was to measure and evaluate the size of human teeth among 22 subjects of different age groups, gender and ethnicity. Additionally, the effect of age, gender and ethnicity on the type of dental procedure was investigated. The study was performed by analyzing the panoramic X-Rays of each subject, which were provided by Dr. J. Timothy Doerner. The statistical analysis was completed by using JMP 12 analytical data statistics software. In the study, we found that gender affects the size of teeth and the number and type of dental procedure done. Likewise, there was a significant …

Migration, Labor Scarcity, And Deforestation In Honduran Cattle Country, David C. Griffith, Raquel Isaula, Pedro Torres, Manuel Villa Cruz
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Large scale labor migration from Olancho, Honduras to the United States, accelerated after 1998, when Hurricane Mitch devastated the region and resulted in the United States offering Temporary Protective Status (TPS) to affected Hondurans. As growing numbers left for the United States, the loss of productive youth to migration and the development of new local economic opportunities combined to create shortages of labor available for traditional uses of local natural resources in rural communities. Remittances from abroad and sentimental factors also contributed to the erosion of local labor supplies, leading some rural producers to phase back on mixed crop-and-livestock strategies …
