"The 'Report to Dr. John Fothergill,' by William Bartram (1739-1823), recounts the naturalist’s adventure through the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, which he related back to his London patron. Fothergill funded Bartram to explore the pre-Revolutionary South in order to gather and artistically document specimens. During this period, Bartram drew animals and plants, while also collecting “nondescript” (undescribed) flowers and seeds, and Fothergill related information about how to properly package and ship the parcels overseas. The front of the binding on this manuscript further call Christ into mind. Pressed into the leather are six images of animals, including a lion, peacock, pelican, and grifffin. The griffin and lion act as direct symbols of Christ as savior and the Resurrection. The peacock and pelican allude more indirectly to Christ through legend.

The leaf begins the Prophesy of Ezekiel. A decorated initial "E" begins the prologue. The historiated initial "E," depicting Ezekiel sleeping with the vision of the four heads of the beasts above him, begins the incipit. The inclusion of halos above each beast's head points to Christian interpretation of the animals of the tetramorph as the four evangelists.

The Epistle of James stresses that faith must be backed by action. The Epistle of James emphasizes the practicalities of exercising Christianity. A hybrid with an animal head, mouth open and ears pointed straight back, resides in the initial "A" that opens the prologue to the Epistle. James stands in front of a building in the shape of a tower in the opening initial "P." This historiated initial is one of the tallest among the Bible 'A' illustrations, stretching down 34 lines of text.
