A Connected Life: Functional Communication, Social Participation, And Real-World Outcomes In Chronic Post-Stroke Aphasia, Lauren Marie Hammond
A Connected Life: Functional Communication, Social Participation, And Real-World Outcomes In Chronic Post-Stroke Aphasia, Lauren Marie Hammond
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines functional communication in persons with chronic post-stroke aphasia (PWA), with a focus on how communication ability is conceptualized, measured, and related to real-world participation. While traditional aphasia assessments primarily measure impairment-level language abilities, they often fail to capture the contextual, multimodal, and interactive nature of communication as it occurs in everyday life. Addressing this gap, the present work investigates functional communication from multiple perspectives, including measurement approaches, assessment development, and real-world communication outcomes.
Aim 1 presents a scoping review of functional communication assessments used in aphasia research and clinical practice. Studies were reviewed to identify formal and …
Politics And Intergenerational Conflict: Investigating The Impact Of Affective Polarization On Well-Being In The Vietnamese American Community, Van Phan
Theses and Dissertations
Vietnamese Americans are more likely than other Asian subgroups to identify as Republican. Despite this, Asian American youth, including Vietnamese Americans, still overwhelmingly identify with the Democratic Party. While political orientation could be a source of intergenerational conflict between Asian American generational groups, few studies assess these issues. The present study is an exploratory, hypothesis-generating study investigating the effect of affective polarization in politics on the relationship between intergenerational conflict and well-being for first-and-second-generation Vietnamese Americans. Results showed that affective polarization did act as a moderator for intergenerational conflict on perceived stress for both first-and-second-generation Vietnamese Americans. Specifically, Vietnamese Americans …
Assessing Hereditary Cancer Risk And Genetic Counseling Knowledge And Interest In Appalachian Kentuckians, Ashton Farmer
Assessing Hereditary Cancer Risk And Genetic Counseling Knowledge And Interest In Appalachian Kentuckians, Ashton Farmer
Theses and Dissertations
Appalachian Kentucky has the highest cancer incidence in the United States and about 5-10% of all cancer has a hereditary cause. Despite this, there are no board- certified genetic counselors located in the area, and few genomic studies have been done in this population. This study aimed to define Appalachian Kentuckians’ interest in cancer genetic counseling and knowledge of cancer risk factors. An original online survey including multiple choice, Likert scale, and open response items was utilized to assess interest in pursuing cancer genetic counseling and how knowledge of cancer causes impacts interest in cancer genetic counseling. Quantum Spin-Like Behavior Of Elastic Guided Waves: Quantized Geometric Phase For Nde And Shm, Md Ebrahim Khalil Bhuiyan
Quantum Spin-Like Behavior Of Elastic Guided Waves: Quantized Geometric Phase For Nde And Shm, Md Ebrahim Khalil Bhuiyan
Theses and Dissertations
Ultrasonic guided waves are widely used in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) for detecting defects and damage in engineering materials and structures. Conventional diagnostic features, such as attenuation of wave amplitude, shifts in time-of-flight, and frequency variations are widely used for damage identification. However, these metrics are inherently sensitive to environmental and operational variations, including temperature, pressure, humidity, sensor coupling conditions, boundary constraints, and external loading. Such sensitivities introduce significant uncertainty in signal interpretation, often obscuring damage-related signatures. Recent advances in wave physics have revealed that elastic guided waves exhibit intrinsic spin angular momentum (SAM), arising from …
Targeting Endothelial Dysfunction In Capillary Malformations: Mechanistic Insights And Adjunct Therapeutic Strategies, Mackenzie Azuero
Targeting Endothelial Dysfunction In Capillary Malformations: Mechanistic Insights And Adjunct Therapeutic Strategies, Mackenzie Azuero
Theses and Dissertations
Port-wine stains (PWS), clinically classified as capillary malformations (CM), are congenital vascular anomalies characterized by abnormally dilated dermal capillaries that persist throughout life and may progressively darken and thicken with age. Pulsed dye laser (PDL) therapy remains the clinical standard of care for PWS; however, complete lesion clearance is uncommon and many patients experience incomplete or temporary responses. Increasing evidence suggests that endothelial survival and vascular remodeling following laser exposure may contribute to lesion persistence and recurrence, highlighting the need for adjunct therapeutic strategies that target the underlying cellular mechanisms of vascular recovery. This thesis investigates endothelial dysfunction and therapeutic …
Recollection Of The Archaic Psyche: A Comparative Study Of Viacheslav Ivanov’S Realistic Symbolism And Carl Gustav Jung’S Analytical Psychology, Jack Wilson Dedmondt
Recollection Of The Archaic Psyche: A Comparative Study Of Viacheslav Ivanov’S Realistic Symbolism And Carl Gustav Jung’S Analytical Psychology, Jack Wilson Dedmondt
Theses and Dissertations
While nominally appearing disparate in their construction, the theoretical systems pioneered by Russian Symbolist poet Viacheslav Ivanov and Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung operate under parallel hermeneutics of inference concerning the symbolic comprehension of reality. This dichotomy is drawn between an immediate (conscious) stratum of sensible reality of Apollonian, concrete, individual, and intelligible forms, and a transcendent (unconscious) stratum of Dionysian, associative, collective, and nominally unintelligible forms. In the present investigation, we aim to identify the proximity between Jungian analytical psychology and Ivanov’s “Realistic Symbolism” in order to provide the groundwork for future application of Jungian methodologies as an interpretive …
Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of Dopaminergic Reward Pathways Across The Adult Lifespan, Julia Cardarelli
Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of Dopaminergic Reward Pathways Across The Adult Lifespan, Julia Cardarelli
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the effect of age on three major dopaminergic reward pathways using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Resting state imaging refers to low-frequency brain connectivity in the absence of task demands or directed thought patterns. The pathways included in this thesis are as follows: the nigrostriatal, mesolimbic, and mesocortical pathways. These pathways rely on dopamine and are known for a variety of functions, most notably regulating responses to rewarding and aversive stimuli. This analysis compared the connectivity between key regions of interest, where transmission originates in the midbrain and substantia nigra, and terminates in the orbitofrontal cortex, …
Caribbean Movements In Alejo Carpentier’S Écue-Yamba-Ó And Maryse Condé’S Traversée De La Mangrove, Gisselle Lopez
Caribbean Movements In Alejo Carpentier’S Écue-Yamba-Ó And Maryse Condé’S Traversée De La Mangrove, Gisselle Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
One of the broad questions this essay examines is how literature represents Caribbean cultural identity. This essay continues the conversation of how Caribbean cultures are formed, depicted, and defined in twentieth-century literature, specifically, in Alejo Carpentier’s Écue-Yamba-Ó and Maryse Condé’s Traversée de la mangrove. Although the novels are published within about fifty years from one another, both writers consider the question of what Caribbean cultural identity may look like. Carpentier’s Écue-Yamba-Ó follows the life of Menegildo, an Afro-Cuban man who works in the sugar plantations, who ends up killing a Haitian man. In his first novel, Carpentier writes from a …
Factorized Electron-Nuclear Dynamics: Theory Development And Implementation, Julian Stetzler
Factorized Electron-Nuclear Dynamics: Theory Development And Implementation, Julian Stetzler
Theses and Dissertations
In the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation, nuclei are treated as classical particles. The theoretical and computational approaches that go beyond it are impractical for all but the smallest chemical systems. However, such methods are necessary to simulate many photochemical and biological processes. This thesis discusses two important topics of research in this feld: frst, improving electronic structure theory to efciently describe quantum nuclei; second, developing a scalable quantum dynamics method, the factorized electron-nuclear dynamics (FENDy).
Following the BO approximation, the electronic structure of molecules is routinely examined for static arrangements of point nuclei, which is a highly useful premise but not …

Millimeter Wave Channel Modeling In Shipboard Environments, Patrick Morris
Millimeter Wave Channel Modeling In Shipboard Environments, Patrick Morris
Theses and Dissertations
The millimeter wave (mmWave) band has been increasingly studied in recent years due to the saturation of other common frequency bands and the need for higher data rates for current and future communications systems. In this thesis, we quantify key channel parameters for mmWave channels in several environments, including an office setting, an indoor corridor, outdoor areas near a large building, and two shipboard environments. Using a center frequency of 30.5 GHz and signal bandwidth of 500 MHz, we quantify path loss and delay dispersion. The shipboard environments are a focus due to their novelty. Measurements were made using a …
An Examination Of Gendered Experiences In Undergraduate Engineering Education With Emphasis On Participation, Validation, And Persistence, Madison Lynn Burlett
An Examination Of Gendered Experiences In Undergraduate Engineering Education With Emphasis On Participation, Validation, And Persistence, Madison Lynn Burlett
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates gendered experiences in undergraduate engineering education, with particular attention to academic validation, participation, and belonging. While prior research suggests disparities in retention and representation, these patterns are often examined through quantitative metrics such as grades, self-efficacy, or survey- based perceptions. Such approaches can provide limited insight into how students interpret and navigate engineering environments in practice. This study adds to the existing body of research by examining students’ lived academic experiences through qualitative analysis.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with undergraduate engineering students across multiple disciplines and academic levels. Interviews elicited detailed accounts of how students approached academic …
A Vision-Language Model Framework For Geographically And Environmentally Informed Soundscape Assessment, Pengyu Chen
A Vision-Language Model Framework For Geographically And Environmentally Informed Soundscape Assessment, Pengyu Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Sound environments shape how people experience urban spaces, yet conventional noise monitoring relies on isolated sensors that lack semantic context and spatial scalability. This study explores whether Vision-Language Models (VLMs) can infer acoustic conditions directly from street-view imagery, offering a scalable alternative to dense sensor networks. This thesis focuses on three tasks: (1) identifying visible sound sources (vehicles, pedestrians, water features); (2) predicting sound pressure levels (SPL) in decibels; and (3) classifying sound type into Natural, Mechanical, or Human categories. I collected 200 field samples across 11 cities using mobile phones and decibel meters, producing aligned image-spectrogram-dB triplets spanning diverse …
Soil Macroinvertebrate Biodiversity Patterns In Congaree National Park And The Role Of Dna Barcoding, Sharon Ann Kendrick
Soil Macroinvertebrate Biodiversity Patterns In Congaree National Park And The Role Of Dna Barcoding, Sharon Ann Kendrick
Theses and Dissertations
Soil and leaf-litter invertebrates are important components of terrestrial biodiversity and contribute to key ecosystem processes such as decomposition, nutrient cycling, and soil formation. Despite their ecological importance, these communities remain difficult to document because many taxa are small, cryptic, or challenging to identify using morphology alone. This study examined patterns of soil macroinvertebrate biodiversity across habitats within Congaree National Park while also evaluating the usefulness of DNA barcoding for documenting taxonomic diversity. Sampling was conducted at 39 sites between September 2022 and October 2024 across upland, bottomland, and bluff habitats. Macroinvertebrates were collected separately from leaf litter and soil …
“Why, Marcus, So She Is”: An Examination Of The Father/Daughter Relationship In Shakespeare’S ‘Titus Andronicus’, Anna Elizabeth Cunningham
“Why, Marcus, So She Is”: An Examination Of The Father/Daughter Relationship In Shakespeare’S ‘Titus Andronicus’, Anna Elizabeth Cunningham
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is concerned with the father/daughter relationship between Titus and Lavinia in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. Scholarship on this relationship is sparse, and chapter two discusses the context that it is typically understood within, namely the father/daughter chastity pattern—in which fathers jealously protect their acquiescent daughters’ chastity from violation, ending in the daughter’s death. It is asserted that Titus and Lavinia fall outside of this pattern. Chapter three examines Titus and Lavinia’s relationship before her assault, asserting that Titus assumes the role of Roman first and father second, which guides his treatment of all his children. Lavinia is connected to …
The Graduate Piano Student With Adhd: Learning And Practicing With Ongoing Challenges In Executive Function, Molly Alyse Thomas
The Graduate Piano Student With Adhd: Learning And Practicing With Ongoing Challenges In Executive Function, Molly Alyse Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in the United States. According to the DSM-5-TR, ADHD is characterized by inappropriate levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is widely considered a disorder for children and adolescents, however, there is a growing number of adults receiving an ADHD diagnosis in adulthood. Because of this later diagnosis, it is unlikely that adults with ADHD have developed effective coping strategies for management of daily responsibilities. While ADHD symptoms create challenges for individuals with ADHD, deficits in Executive Functioning (EF) are one of the foremost contributors to issues with personal, …
We Pass It On”: The Information Journey Of Black Single Mothers With Terminal Degrees – A Soundtrack Of Struggles, Successes, And Resilience, Kiera O'Shea
Theses and Dissertations
Historically, Black single mothers have played pivotal roles in their families and communities, often navigating societal systems that were not designed to include them. Systemic barriers including unemployment, wage inequality, educational inequity, and mass incarceration have contributed to a disproportionate number of Black children being raised in single-parent households, compounding the challenges Black women face when pursuing higher education. And yet Black single mothers with terminal degrees keep going — not simply despite those barriers, but through them, around them, and beyond them.
This study investigated the information behavior of Black single mothers with terminal degrees, examining how they figured …

Examining Marine Fungal Nitrous Oxide Production, Qintiantian Nong
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas, can be produced by microorganisms inhabiting marine environments. While bacterial denitrification is a major source of N2O, the role of marine fungi in this process remains poorly constrained. This thesis investigates the contribution of marine fungi to N2O production from salt marsh sediments, while also isolating new N2O-producing marine fungi and advancing methodological approaches for quantifying denitrification. First, we conducted experiments to quantify the fungal contribution to N2O production using salt and brackish marsh sediments collected from the North Inlet–Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in South Carolina during the summer and winter …

Contributions Toward Understanding The Weak Lefschetz Property For Two Classes Of Almost Complete Intersection Ideals, Matthew Davidson Booth
Contributions Toward Understanding The Weak Lefschetz Property For Two Classes Of Almost Complete Intersection Ideals, Matthew Davidson Booth
Theses and Dissertations
In 1980, Richard Stanley proved that Artinian monomial complete intersections enjoy the strong Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. Since his landmark result, the strong and weak Lefschetz properties (SLP and WLP) have garnered attention from an increasing number of mathematicians from an ever-broadening swath of the mathematical community. Indeed, the Lefschetz properties have been scrutinized for their relation to algebraic invariants such as Betti numbers and the Hilbert function as well as their links from commutative algebra to other branches of mathematics.
However, the Lefschetz properties are also quite subtle; the aforementioned result due to Stanely is a rather rare …

“Get Out To Vote, No Time To Stay At Home”: Grassroots Pedagogy And Political Organizing Of The Johns Island Citizenship School, Anne Elizabeth Mineri
Theses and Dissertations
The 1957 Johns Island Citizenship School emerged from the everyday actions of local leaders like Esau Jenkins, Septima Clark, and Bernice Robinson as a foundational site of grassroots pedagogy and organizing that reshaped the political landscape of the South Carolina Sea Islands. Situated within the critical years between 1957 and 1961, a formative moment in the modern Black freedom struggle, the school demonstrates how local activism laid the groundwork for broader regional and national movements. In a state where literacy tests functioned as mechanisms of disenfranchisement, learning to read and write became a direct challenge to systems of exclusion. Through …
Reading The Criminal Mind: Victorian Pseudoscience And The Fear Of Degeneration In “The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde”, Abigail Jasa Sommer
Reading The Criminal Mind: Victorian Pseudoscience And The Fear Of Degeneration In “The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde”, Abigail Jasa Sommer
Theses and Dissertations
This paper argues that Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) functions as a gothic critique of late-Victorian pseudoscience and the cultural desire to make morality legible on the body. Situating the novella amid phrenology, physiognomy, criminal anthropology, degeneration theory, and evolutionary psychology, it shows how scientific discourse circulated beyond professional institutions to shape popular assumptions about deviance, identity, and social order. Through Jekyll’s experiment and Hyde’s emergence, Stevenson stages the collapse of the “scientific gaze”: Hyde appears to confirm the period’s criminal typologies, yet his deformity remains simultaneously undeniable and indescribable, exposing the …
Rating Ai Models For Robustness Through A Causal Lens, Kausik Lakkaraju
Rating Ai Models For Robustness Through A Causal Lens, Kausik Lakkaraju
Theses and Dissertations
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems become increasingly powerful and widely accessible, trustworthiness remains a major barrier to their adoption in critical domains such as finance and healthcare. With the advent of large language models (LLMs) that can perform multiple tasks with strong empirical performance, users increasingly rely on these black-box AI services to obtain recommendations, analyze text, and support everyday decisions. However, real-world incidents and empirical studies show that these systems can be overly sensitive to small changes in input, producing outputs that shift substantially under minor perturbations. In addition, models have been reported to exhibit stereotypical behavior and systematic …
