Resisting Resistance: Activism In/And The Political Economy Of Intercollegiate Athletics, Anthony J. Weems, Yannick Kluch
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Drawing from political economic analysis, this essay argues the structural and ideological function of college sport is to maintain hegemonic order in the face of athlete activism. Briefly outlining the political economy of college sport, the authors point to how this political economy actively constrains athlete activism as a counter-hegemonic challenge. The authors discuss implications in the context of scholarly activism and call for a more radical, integrative orientation to research and teaching in relation to sporting activism(s). In doing so, this essay argues there is potential to challenge hegemonic structures that minimize agency and ultimately reshape the political economy …
Mandated Parent Education: Applications, Impacts, And Future Directions, Cheri Shapiro, Crystal Hill-Chapman, Stephanie Williams
Mandated Parent Education: Applications, Impacts, And Future Directions, Cheri Shapiro, Crystal Hill-Chapman, Stephanie Williams

Mandated participation in parent education programs is a common practice across the United States for families who are undergoing divorce or who are involved in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems. Mandates to participate in parenting programs create substantial challenges for families, service providers, and service systems. Furthermore, the type and quality of the parenting services accessed vary widely, and their impacts need to be better understood. To address this need, an overview of the current state of the empirical literature on the impacts and outcomes of mandated parenting interventions for divorce and in child welfare and juvenile justice …

Previous research indicates that menopause can be an extremely difficult transition for some autistic people. This study asks how autistic people experience menopause and how they can better access services, support and information; autistic Community Research Associates played an important role in each stage of the research. Online focus groups and interviews were conducted with 24 autistic participants who lived in Canada (n = 13) or the United Kingdom (n = 11) and had experience with the menopausal transition. Transcripts were coded and analysed by four team members using reflexive thematic analysis. Four themes and eight subthemes were …

Motivations Behind The Rise And Success Of Homeopathy In India, Kavya Patchipulusu
Senior Theses
Homeopathy is a form of medicine that is incredibly controversial and is often labeled as a fraudulent, placebo effect drug, that can have potentially dangerous side effects. This is the picture that is painted of homeopathy in the United States and many other countries in which these medicines are banned in distribution or highly unregulated. In contrast, India has popularized and well-integrated homeopathy into their medical systems with government backing and consistent funding towards accredited homeopathic institutions and funding hospital systems. This paper will explore the circumstances and health care dynamics of India that allowed homeopathy to gain the level …

Objective: This study aimed to characterize and validate potential therapist “missteps,” or inadvertent behaviors that may impact youth and family engagement in mental health services.
Method: Ten misstep types were coded from 224 treatment sessions provided by 92 therapists. Rapid qualitative analysis using key informant interviews was conducted to examine insights related to the occurrence, expected impact, and perceived severity of therapist missteps as an indicator of the face validity of the missteps construct and types.
Results: All 10 misstep types demonstrated good reliability (Fleiss’ k = .71−.88). All 10 misstep types appeared to have facevalidity with key informants. Key …
Do Professor Characteristics Influence College Students' Mental Health Disclosure?, Giselle Solorio, Kenneth Barideaux Jr.
Do Professor Characteristics Influence College Students' Mental Health Disclosure?, Giselle Solorio, Kenneth Barideaux Jr.
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Previous studies have provided some evidence that college students may hesitate to disclose their mental health status because of social stigma; however, more research is needed to identify and understand the factors that influence students’ willingness to disclose. For example, it is unclear how professor characteristics impact the likelihood of disclosure. In the current study we examined whether the gender of the professor (male vs. female) and the professor’s teaching discipline (STEM vs. humanities) affected students' likelihood to disclose a mental health problem. Participants read a fictitious syllabus where the professor was either male or female and taught a chemistry …

Introduction: Guided by a communications-focused framework developed by an interdisciplinary team of authors, this paper presents data from a survey of health science faculty members to better understand how research collaborations are established and maintained. Methods: An electronic survey was distributed to faculty in six colleges at a Research 1 institution. Quantitative data were downloaded into Excel and then RStudio for descriptive analysis. Open-ended, qualitative responses were coded and analyzed for themes. Results: Most respondents were in public health (44.0%) or medicine (25.3%); 40.0% were tenured. A grant deadline was the main impetus reported for initiating research collaborations (86.1%). Most …

Background: Passive remote monitoring technologies (RMT) utilize information gathered from sensors that is transmitted to a caregiver to alert them to a possible incident. There are gaps in our knowledge about the level of satisfaction with passive RMT from the perspective of those who have actual experience using this technology, including family and friend caregivers. This knowledge is important as caregivers are instrumental in determining whether passive RMT will be adopted and utilized over time. In addition, technologies designed for older adults and their caregivers are both helpful and user-friendly. Objective: The aim of this research was to identify the …
