First Aid And Emergency Preparedness: Improving Health Outcomes Among Aging Adults, Anna J. Kulangara
First Aid And Emergency Preparedness: Improving Health Outcomes Among Aging Adults, Anna J. Kulangara
Senior Theses
As the United States population demographic shifts and the baby boomer population enters seniority, the health sector must adjust and prepare to provide efficient and adequate healthcare to the people. The Silver Tsunami, a metaphor for the expected wave of aging adults, will inevitably strain healthcare professionals and can be partly relieved by promoting risk-minimizing behavior in baby boomers before severe conditions develop. Through this effort, a health education course, titled First Aid and Emergency Preparedness, was developed and taught twice at a local senior center to target senior citizens and promote proactivity and healthy behaviors. Course development founded largely …
Structured Supervision Support: The Association With Time Between Supervision And Treatment Events, Anna H. Hukill
Structured Supervision Support: The Association With Time Between Supervision And Treatment Events, Anna H. Hukill
Senior Theses
Supervision is an important resource for assisting mental health providers in providing quality care to clients but not much is known about how its timing unfolds. Data for this study were drawn from the Reaching Families study, which examined the efficacy of a coordinated intervention framework for addressing engagement problems in children’s mental health. Providers from Los Angeles, California and across South Carolina were divided into two groups – one received training in a coordinated framework for addressing low engagement (Coordinated Knowledge System) and the other was a control condition (Delayed Training). The current study examined time between notification of …
Overview Of The Housing First Model: An Underutilized Approach To Ending Homelessness, Catherine A. O'Byrne
Overview Of The Housing First Model: An Underutilized Approach To Ending Homelessness, Catherine A. O'Byrne
Senior Theses
Homelessness is a nuanced social issue that affects every demographic in a community. My final thesis has developed from two main components, a creative project and a research paper, to better understand this multifaceted topic. The creative project was an art-based event to raise both awareness and funds for a local homeless shelter in Columbia, South Carolina. The project was completed in partnership with Transitions Homeless Center and the University of South Carolina. By working with Transitions, I became more aware of the current state of homelessness in South Carolina and of different methods that can continue to mitigate the …
Thou Shalt Lie: Anticipatory Deflection Management, Victoria L. Money
Thou Shalt Lie: Anticipatory Deflection Management, Victoria L. Money
Theses and Dissertations
As people visualize ongoing or future interactions, do they lie to maintain situational congruency? While visualizing various behavioral options, or the outcomes of such behaviors, people have a unique opportunity to preemptively alter the definition of the situation based on anticipated sentiments. Affect Control Theory emphasizes the salience of deflection management in everyday life. This is otherwise known as an attempted realignment of experiences and expectations in the face of situational incongruency such as the bizarre. Using a vignette experiment, I extend Affect Control Theory by illuminating deflection not yet experienced but instead anticipated. I do so by estimating the …

Checkmate: Exploring Father-Son Communication Regarding Reproduction And Sexual Health In Males With Cystic Fibrosis, Dianna C. Sanderson
Checkmate: Exploring Father-Son Communication Regarding Reproduction And Sexual Health In Males With Cystic Fibrosis, Dianna C. Sanderson
Theses and Dissertations
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a heritable monogenic condition with allelic heterogeneity. A variety of sequence alterations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene results clinically in multisystem disease including a reduced reproductive capacity in affected males. Knowledge of reproductive capacity is often disclosed to parents by medical providers and to affected male children by medical providers and their parents. Despite advanced technology and therapeutics yielding the benefits of increased life expectancy and quality of life, males affected with CF largely remain uninformed in broader areas of sexual health and particularly in how their concept of masculine …
The Cultural Relevance Of Music Education As It Relates To African American Students In South Carolina, Felicia Denise Denise Myers Bulgozdy
The Cultural Relevance Of Music Education As It Relates To African American Students In South Carolina, Felicia Denise Denise Myers Bulgozdy
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, Critical Race Theory is used to examine the current curriculum that preservice music teachers are taught, and are consequently teaching K-12 students, in an effort to illustrate the need for Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. Documents such as the S.C. All-State Choral rubric, as well as a list of required courses for future music educators at a local university, are studied to show the overwhelming European influence on the curriculum that is being taught in music classes daily across the state, and demonstrate the lack of cultural relevance to the African American students in those classes. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy …
Two Essays Examining Consumer Responses To Product And Service Failures, Sotires Pagiavlas
Two Essays Examining Consumer Responses To Product And Service Failures, Sotires Pagiavlas
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of two essays that examine consumer responses to product and service failures. In essay 1, I use the U.S. automobile industry as a backdrop to investigate how consumers respond when their products experience a defect-related failure identified by the manufacturer that necessitates a recall. I develop a conceptual framework to test the impact of a regulator-initiated digital marketing campaign (DMC) on consumer compliance to product recalls. The empirical context is the launch of a nationwide DMC by the U.S. automobile industry’s regulator. The analysis spans 12 quarters of recall completion data pertaining to 296 recalls falling …
Diameter Of 3-Colorable Graphs And Some Remarks On The Midrange Crossing Constant, Inne Singgih
Diameter Of 3-Colorable Graphs And Some Remarks On The Midrange Crossing Constant, Inne Singgih
Theses and Dissertations
The first part of this dissertation discussing the problem of bounding the diameter of a graph in terms of its order and minimum degree. The initial problem was solved independently by several authors between 1965 − 1989. They proved that for fixed δ ≥ 2 and large n, diam(G) ≤ 3n+ O(1). In 1989, Erdős, Pach, Pollack, and Tuza conjectured that the upper bound on the diameter can be improved if G does not contain a large complete subgraph Kk.
Let r, δ ≥ 2 be fixed integers and let G be a connected graph with n vertices …
Integrating Survivors Of Stroke Into Cardiac Rehabilitation, Elizabeth Wherley Regan
Integrating Survivors Of Stroke Into Cardiac Rehabilitation, Elizabeth Wherley Regan
Theses and Dissertations
Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States (U.S.). Impairments after stroke typically result in reduced physical activity which increases the risk for stroke recurrence and the development or worsening of comorbid health conditions. Physical activity and exercise behaviors can reduce cardiovascular risk factors and improve endurance for survivors of stroke. Despite these known significant benefits, survivors of stroke face barriers to participating in regular physical activity due to limited self-efficacy, safety concerns, environmental restrictions and lack of accessible community programs.
Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is a structured exercise and behavior modification program for people with cardiovascular disease …
Unpacking The Effects Of International Experience In Intercultural Negotiations, Chei Hwee Chua
Unpacking The Effects Of International Experience In Intercultural Negotiations, Chei Hwee Chua
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how international experience influences the outcomes of intercultural negotiations. Its main contributions lie in the novel and contextualized conceptualization of international experience and the development of a comprehensive theoretical model that unpacks the effects of international experience in intercultural negotiations. I propose that international experience is a multi-dimensional construct that encompasses four dimensions: breadth, depth, cultural distance, and cultural heterogeneity. I argue that experiences abroad develop and strengthen individuals’ intercultural competence, psychological capital and global identity, which in turn positively influence the outcomes of intercultural negotiations, i.e., they mediate the relationship between international experience and intercultural negotiation …
Evaluating Pregnancy Outcomes Of Abnormal Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening Results In A High Risk Obstetrics Practice, Olivia Kesler
Evaluating Pregnancy Outcomes Of Abnormal Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening Results In A High Risk Obstetrics Practice, Olivia Kesler
Theses and Dissertations
Non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS) has rapidly grown in uptake since its introduction to clinical practice in 2011. In contrast to more traditional methods of screening, NIPS is the first to utilize cell-free fetal DNA for risk assessment of chromosomal aneuploidy and other conditions. Clinical validity has been established for the most common autosomal aneuploidies (Trisomy 21, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13) and sex chromosome aneuploidies, though some laboratories screen for conditions beyond these. A screen positive does not always indicate a true positive, therefore professional guidelines recommend diagnostic testing for confirmation and informed decision making on pregnancy management. Furthermore, the …

Purpose: This project was conducted in order to assess how parents of a child affected by CYP21A2-related classic CAH experienced receiving genetic information, The goal was to determine their knowledge of the genetics of the condition and how that knowledge has affected different aspects of their lives such as emotional well-being. Methods: Parents of a child with classic CAH diagnosed in the past 10 years were invited to participate in an online survey via an advertisement posted in the support group, Major Aspects of Growth in Children. Survey questions consisted of demographic information, experience with the diagnostic process, knowledge of …
Japan’S 2d Trauma Culture: Defining Crisis Cinema In Post-3/11 Japan, Matthew C. Hill
Japan’S 2d Trauma Culture: Defining Crisis Cinema In Post-3/11 Japan, Matthew C. Hill
Theses and Dissertations
This paper labors to expound the link between the socially mediated “trauma process,” or the creation of collective trauma through social discourse, and the proposed moniker of “crisis cinema” that has often been deployed by media scholars with no clear parameters. This paper, then, endeavors to evince the trauma process’ relevance to crises and disasters, explicitly define a paradigm by which crisis cinema can be understood, and subsequently utilized by a larger patronage, and showcase the pair’s reliance on one another. This is approached through the locus of the March 11, 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and a selection of …
Are You A Boy Or A Girl?: Representations Of Transgender Children In Picture Books, Joshua Hill
Are You A Boy Or A Girl?: Representations Of Transgender Children In Picture Books, Joshua Hill
Theses and Dissertations
This research was a critical content analysis of picture books that contained transgender children utilizing Butler’s (2004, 2006) performativity of gender and recognizability of gender alongside Engdahls’s (2014) wrong-body discourse. The question was, how do picture books about transgender represent various versions of queerness in children? This analysis was done by examining 20 total picture books which included 10 books about trans girls, six books about trans boys, and four books about nonbinary children. These 20 books were then broken down into eight books for a deeper analysis of the ways that queerness was represented. The findings included the ways …
Skepticism, Perfectionism, Romanticism – Cavell, Kant, Kleist, Maximilian Gindorf
Skepticism, Perfectionism, Romanticism – Cavell, Kant, Kleist, Maximilian Gindorf
Theses and Dissertations
Michael Fischer early commented that in “Cavell’s work, literature is always bringing to mind philosophy, and philosophy is always opening itself to literature, generating a dialogue that transforms each one.” (3) For Cavell, this dialogue unfolds around the philosophical problem of skepticism. Romanticism around 1800 was not only invested in questioning the differences between philosophy and literature, but also absorbed by the problem of skepticism. The specific combination of literature and skepticism, however, changes the appearance of the latter. In order to show how this takes place, the first chapter is dedicated to an interpretation of skepticism as philosophical problem …
“How Did You Get Here?”: Using Counter-Narratives And Critical Race Theory To Explore The Placement Experiences Of Black Males In Self-Contained Special Education Settings, Xandria Renata Sutton
“How Did You Get Here?”: Using Counter-Narratives And Critical Race Theory To Explore The Placement Experiences Of Black Males In Self-Contained Special Education Settings, Xandria Renata Sutton
Theses and Dissertations
The special education system in the United States is disproportionately overrepresented by Black males. This is increasingly true for high-incidence disability types, such as emotional/behavioral disorders and specific learning disabilities. It also rings true that those same disability types are those that are most often placed in restrictive special education settings such as the self-contained classroom. Based on research, students placed in restrictive settings often have limited educational opportunities and poorer lifelong outcomes (Rueter, 2011). It is for those reasons that it is important that we examine the reasons for the decades long continuation of the overrepresentation of Black males …

The lived experiences of this population are described to share their stories and work towards better policy solutions to the U.S. college drug epidemic.
Silent Sam And Saunders Hall: Protests And Reactions At The University Of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Brienne Mcdaniel
Silent Sam And Saunders Hall: Protests And Reactions At The University Of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Brienne Mcdaniel
Theses and Dissertations
Universities across the country have been forced to confront how they remember and memorialize the past on their campuses as students and community members protest building names and statues. This qualitative case study used Bolman and Deal’s four-frame theory as a framework to understand the response to protests at one school, the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. The fourframes provided insight into the complexities surrounding the changing of the name of Saunders Hall to Carolina Hall and the controversy surrounding the Confederate Monument known as Silent Sam. The symbolic frame was most evident in the conflicting meaning of symbols. …
Time’S Up: How Opera Is Facing Its Own Me Too Reckoning, Craig Price
Time’S Up: How Opera Is Facing Its Own Me Too Reckoning, Craig Price
Theses and Dissertations
Opera as an artform has a very misogynistic history. Many of the most beloved works in the standard repertory involve female characters as victims of violence, or an abuse of power by male characters. These works have recently been cast in a different light, in part due to a greater cultural awareness inspired by the “Me Too” movement. This study was executed to explore productions of standard repertory operas around the world, and how they have been handled in light of current culture. The study examines popularly performed operas Carmen, Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro, and …
Influences On Parents’ Food Shopping For Children’S Consumption In South Carolina, Nazratun Nayeem Monalisa
Influences On Parents’ Food Shopping For Children’S Consumption In South Carolina, Nazratun Nayeem Monalisa
Theses and Dissertations
Background: The diets of children in the United States typically do not meet dietary guidelines. Energy-dense nutrient-poor (EDNP) foods dominate children’s diets, contributing excessive energy, sugar, sodium, and fat intake. Home is the major source of children’s energy intake. Parents oversee household food purchases including foods for children.
Objectives: This research aimed to 1) identify parents’ food and beverage purchases for their household and for 6-11-year old children; 2) understand how parents made food purchase decisions by adjudicating among different values; 3) understand children’s food choice construction, strategies to influence parents for desired items, and extent of children’s influence.
Methods: …
Sense Of Community Among Independently Housed Individuals With Serious Mental Illness, Ladonna L. Gleason
Sense Of Community Among Independently Housed Individuals With Serious Mental Illness, Ladonna L. Gleason
Theses and Dissertations
People with serious mental illness often struggle to fully integrate into their communities and feel accepted within their own neighborhoods. Prior research suggests that people who participate in supportive or supported housing programsmay benefit fromsupport designed to facilitate integration within one’s community. However, little prior research has explored how sense of community is constructed for individuals who live in the community without benefit of support programs. With so little research concerned with sense of community for those without housing services, there exists a large gap in the literature for this population. The purpose of the current study was to add …
International Conflict, Political Leaders, And Accountability, William Thomas Christiansen
International Conflict, Political Leaders, And Accountability, William Thomas Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the role that an individual leader’s background (e.g. what they did before gaining power) plays in public evaluations of their performance managing international conflicts. I propose a novel theory arguing domestic audience members (e.g. the citizens of a leader’s state paying attention to international conflicts) heuristically analyze the competence of a leader by examining their professional and educational background. Once audience members determine whether a leader is competent, they use these judgments to inform whether a given leader deserves blame or credit for the outcome of a given conflict. I find support for this theory by fielding …
“That Confusion Of Who Is Who, Flesh And Flesh”: Mothers, Daughters, And The Body In Postwar And Contemporary American Literature, Jennifer Renee Blevins
“That Confusion Of Who Is Who, Flesh And Flesh”: Mothers, Daughters, And The Body In Postwar And Contemporary American Literature, Jennifer Renee Blevins
Theses and Dissertations
In “That confusion of who is who, flesh and flesh”: Mothers, Daughters, and the Body in Postwar and Contemporary American Literature, I investigate how the body limits, disrupts, ruptures, or recuperates the mother/daughter relationship in postwar and contemporary texts by twentieth-century US women writers. These narratives portray the construction of female subjectivity when the feminine self seems insufficiently distinct from the mother (or daughter). In four chapters arranged chronologically by decade, I examine texts by Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, Sylvia Plath, Gwendolyn Brooks, Margaret Atwood, Toni Morrison, Jamaica Kincaid, and Edwidge Danticat. On the one hand, mothers in these texts …
Theraputic Strategies For Altering The Trajectory Of Neurocognitive Impairments In Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders In The Post-Cart Era, Kristen Addie Mclaurin
Theraputic Strategies For Altering The Trajectory Of Neurocognitive Impairments In Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders In The Post-Cart Era, Kristen Addie Mclaurin
Theses and Dissertations
The marked increase in life expectancy for individuals with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), following the great success of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), necessitates an investigation of the progression of HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), and associated neural mechanisms, across the functional lifespan. Furthermore, given the persistence of HAND in the post-cART era, there remains a critical need to develop adjunctive therapeutics targeting the neural mechanisms underlying HAND. Thus, the guiding hypothesis for the present study was threefold. First, that there will be a differential progression of NCI in HIV-1 Tg and control animals. Second, that synaptodendritic dysfunction will …
Microbiome Targeted Therapies In Gulf War Illness, Diana Agnes Kimono
Microbiome Targeted Therapies In Gulf War Illness, Diana Agnes Kimono
Theses and Dissertations
Gulf war illness (GWI) is a chronic multisymptomatic disorder affecting about 30% of veterans of the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf war. Affected veterans complain of chronic symptoms which begun during or shortly after the war and persist 30 years later. This dissertation is a report of three studies which use a murine model to investigate the microbiome as a therapeutic target in GWI. Mice were exposed to pesticides and the prophylactic drug pyridostigmine bromide (PB) and studied these chemical’s impact on the microbiome in both an acute and persistence model of GWI.
The first study looks at the effect of altered …
The Impact Of Hotel Service Robot Appearance And Service Attributes On Customer Experience, Chuhan Thomsen
The Impact Of Hotel Service Robot Appearance And Service Attributes On Customer Experience, Chuhan Thomsen
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade, an increasing discussion has taken place regarding the employment of hotel service robots. One critical issue is the impact service robots exhibit on customer experience. However, most of the existing studies focus on service robots’ technical functions or customer’s adoption behavior instead of customers’ psychological or attitudinal reactions toward the robot. Meanwhile, the emergence of humanoid robots has raised great attention from both researchers and industry practitioners. Humanlike features (e.g. facial expressions, emotions, and motions) inherently affect customer experience in a hotel environment. Nevertheless, limited literature exists in incorporating service robots’ anthropomorphism and service attributes into …
The Effect Of Peer-To-Peer Recognition Systems On Helping Behavior: The Influence Of Rewards And Group Affiliation, Paul W. Black
The Effect Of Peer-To-Peer Recognition Systems On Helping Behavior: The Influence Of Rewards And Group Affiliation, Paul W. Black
Theses and Dissertations
Peer recognition systems are an increasingly popular management control tool through which employees can recognize and thank other employees. While these systems have potential to motivate firm desired behaviors, including behaviors that are unobservable by management, little is known about if, or when, they are effective. Using a laboratory experiment, I examine the effectiveness of these systems in motivating employee helping behavior, both when the system includes rewards and when it does not. While I document that helping behavior is generally greater when peer recognition systems are present, I also document that group affiliation is a key moderating factor in …
Having Newcomers In Diverse Teams: The Effects Of Subgroup Identification And Established Faultlines On Newcomer Information Seeking And Team Creativity, Xing Liu
Theses and Dissertations
The current literature has demonstrated the importance of newcomers’ information seeking on their socialization in teams and the consequences of newcomers on team outcomes such as team creativity. However, there is limited knowledge on the antecedents of newcomer information seeking and team creativity in diverse teams after the entry of a newcomer. In this dissertation, with a focus on newcomers in diverse teams, I investigated two phenomena at the individual level and team level, respectively. At the individual level, I explored the influence of newcomers’ subgroup identification on information seeking via their feelings of psychological safety and the role of …
Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz
Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz
Theses and Dissertations
The current social undermining literature suggests the important role of the witness in determining the negative impact on the victim. However, the literature has yet to explicitly explore the witness’ role in social undermining. In this dissertation, I integrate theory and research on social influence and emotions to develop a framework that suggests social undermining be considered a form of social influence. This framework allows for the exploration of the witness’ sense-making process following a social undermining event along with the accumulated effects of repeated exposure to a series of social undermining events. I propose that social undermining influences witness …
