An Approximation To Miscible Fluid Flows In Porous Media With Point Sources And Sinks By An Eulerian-Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method And Mixed Finite Element Methods, Hong Wang, Liang Dong, Richard E. Ewing, Stephen L. Lyons, Guan Qin

We develop an Eulerian–Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM)-mixed finite element method (MFEM) solution technique for accurate numerical simulation of coupled systems of partial differential equations (PDEs), which describe complex fluid flow processes in porous media. An ELLAM, which was shown previously to outperform many widely used methods in the context of linear convection-diffusion PDEs, is presented to solve the transport equation for concentration. Since accurate fluid velocities are crucial in numerical simulations, an MFEM is used to solve the pressure equation for the pressure and Darcy velocity. This minimizes the numerical difficulties occurring in standard methods for approximating velocities caused …

This study evaluated 4th-grade students' understanding of the concept of physical activity and assessed the effects of two interventions to enhance the students' understanding of this concept. Students were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 conditions: the video group (n=40) watched a 5-min video describing physical activity; the verbal group (n=42) listened to a generic description of physical activity; the control group received no instruction (n=45). Students completed a 17-item checklist testing their understanding of the concept of physical activity. Compared to controls, students in the verbal and video group demonstrated significantly higher checklist …

The University of North Texas and the African American Museum in Dallas are partners in a program designed to produce expert managers of digital images and information. The School of Library and Information Sciences in cooperation with the School of Visual Arts received a 1998 National Leadership Grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to build a collaborative program that includes a digital imaging laboratory and fellowships for students in a Certificate of Advanced Study Program. The work of the digital image manager includes the production of visual images, the creation and management of databases, and the …

"Get tough" control policies in the United States are often portrayed as the reflection of the public's will: Americans are punitive and want offenders locked up. Research from the past decade both reinforces and challenges this assessment. The public clearly accepts, if not prefers, a range of punitive policies (e.g., capital punishment, three-strikes-and-you're-out laws, imprisonment). But support for get-tough policies is "mushy." Thus citizens may be willing to substitute a sentence of life imprisonment without parole for the death penalty. Especially when nonviolent offenders are involved, there is substantial support for intermediate sanctions and for restorative justice. Despite three decades …
