An Analysis Of School Library Media Centers In South Carolina Elementary And Middle Schools In 2005, John N. Olsgaard, Cynthia Barrilleaux Stockard

Student Publications

In Fall 2005 the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) requested that the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS), University of South Carolina, analyze the data from a survey of school library media centers conducted by the SCDE for school year 2005. This report represents the product of that analysis. The authors wish to thank the Martha Alewine of the SCDE, Martha Taylor of the South Carolina Association of School Librarians, and the SLIS for supporting this study. The authors are solely responsible for the analysis and conclusions of this report. The analysis does not necessarily reflect the views …

Development Of An Electroless Method To Deposit Corrosion-Resistant Silicate Layers On Metallic Substrates, Swaminatha P. Kumaraguru, Basker Veeraraghavan, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

A novel electroless method for depositing corrosion-resistant silicate layers on metallic substrates from aqueous solutions has been developed. The silicate layer was deposited from an aqueous solution of sodium silicate (3.22 weight ratio sodium silicate, 37.5% solution in water from PQ Corporation) and sodium borohydride. The technique is demonstrated by forming a passive film on galvanized steel. Deposition parameters such as concentration of the bath, temperature, and pH have been optimized based on the corrosion characteristics of the final coating. Studies on the coating reveal the formation of a very thin (5 nm) zinc disilicate layer followed by a much …

An Experimental Investigation Of Guided Wave Propagation In Corrugated Plates Showing Stop Bands And Pass Bands, Tribikram Kundu, Sourav Banerjee, Kumar V. Jata Jan 2006

An Experimental Investigation Of Guided Wave Propagation In Corrugated Plates Showing Stop Bands And Pass Bands, Tribikram Kundu, Sourav Banerjee, Kumar V. Jata

Faculty Publications

Nonplanar surfaces are often encountered in engineering structures. In aerospace structures, periodically corrugated boundaries are formed by friction-stir-welding. In civil engineering structures, rebars used in reinforced concrete beams and slabs have periodic surface. Periodic structures are also being used to create desired acoustic band gaps. For health monitoring of these structures, a good understanding of the elastic wave propagation through such periodic structures is necessary. Although a number of research papers on the wave propagation in periodic structures are available in the literature, no one experimentally investigated the guided wave propagation through plates with periodic boundaries and compared the experimental …

Elastic Wave Propagation In Sinusoidally Corrugated Waveguides, Sourav Banerjee, Tribikram Kundu Jan 2006

Elastic Wave Propagation In Sinusoidally Corrugated Waveguides, Sourav Banerjee, Tribikram Kundu

Faculty Publications

The ultrasonicwave propagation in sinusoidally corrugated waveguides is studied in this paper. Periodically corrugated waveguides are gaining popularity in the field of vibration control and for designing structures with desired acoustic band gaps. Currently only numerical method (Boundary Element Method or Finite Element Method) based packages (e.g., PZFlex) are in principle capable of modeling ultrasonic fields in complex structures with rapid change of curvatures at the interfaces and boundaries but no analyses have been reported. However, the packages are very CPU intensive; it requires a huge amount of computation memory and time for its execution. In this paper a new …

Paradox And The Consumption Of Authenticity Through Reality Television, Randall L. Rose, Stacy L. Wood Sep 2005

Paradox And The Consumption Of Authenticity Through Reality Television, Randall L. Rose, Stacy L. Wood

Faculty Publications

We position reality television within the broader category of consumer practices of authenticity seeking in a postmodern cultural context. The study draws on relevant perspectives from consumer research, literary criticism, sociology, and anthropology to argue that viewers of reality television encounter three elements of paradox in the process of constructing authenticity. The negotiation of each paradox exceeds the process of coping with or resolving their inherent contradictions to encompass the creation of new values. We argue that consumers blend fantastic elements of programming with indexical elements connected to their lived experiences to create a form of self-referential hyperauthenticity.

Photochemical Transformations Of Riverine Dissolved Organic Matter: Effects On Estuarine Bacterial Metabolism And Nutrient Demand, Erik M. Smith, Ronald Benner Jul 2005

Photochemical Transformations Of Riverine Dissolved Organic Matter: Effects On Estuarine Bacterial Metabolism And Nutrient Demand, Erik M. Smith, Ronald Benner

Faculty Publications

By experimentally simulating the exposure of terrigenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) to sunlight during the mixing of river water and seawater in an estuary (St. Helena Sound, South Carolina), this study examined how photochemical alterations may affect both the magnitude and fate of DOM utilization by estuarine bacteria. In a series of experiments performed with water samples collected from 3 blackwater rivers draining into an estuary of the South Atlantic Bight (USA), exposure to light resulted in significant decreases in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and DOM absorption at 350 nm relative to dark controls. When these water samples were …

Using Computer-Mediated Communication To Establish Social And Supportive Environments In Teacher Education, Nike Arnold, Lara Ducate, Lara Lomicka, Gillian Lord May 2005

Using Computer-Mediated Communication To Establish Social And Supportive Environments In Teacher Education, Nike Arnold, Lara Ducate, Lara Lomicka, Gillian Lord

Faculty Publications

This article examines social presence in virtual asynchronous learning communities among foreign language teachers. We present the findings of two studies investigating cross-institutional asynchronous forums created to engage participants in online dialogues regarding their foreign language teacher preparation experiences in and out of the classroom. Both studies took place during Fall 2003 and were conducted between first-time teacher/graduate students in four methodology courses at three large state universities. In the first study, students participated in weekly online exchanges in the form of dialogue journals for reflective teaching. In the second study, students were provided with specific topics to address using …

Tennis: The Story Of A Sport - An Exhibition Celebrating The William D. Haggard Iii Tennis Collection, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

The William D. Haggard III Tennis Collection brought to Thomas Cooper Library its first major collection of rare books about sports history. This exhibition tells the story of tennis over the past seven centuries, beginning with a first edition of the first book about tennis (1555). The earlier cases illustrate the development of tennis from its medieval origins in cloister and royal palace, through its central role in the Renaissance and pre-Revolutionary France. The second half of the exhibition follows the reshaping of tennis in France, England, and America in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
