Towards A Public Health Legal Structure For Child Welfare, Josh Gupta-Kagan Sep 2013

Towards A Public Health Legal Structure For Child Welfare, Josh Gupta-Kagan

Faculty Publications

The present American child welfare system infringes upon the fundamental liberty interests of millions of children and parents, is adversarial and punitive, and fails to prevent child maltreatment or protect children adequately from its most severe forms. Many in the field now recognize that a public health model would more effectively support the parent-child relationship and protecting children from maltreatment than the current paradigm. Despite much attention to such an approach, the field has yet to develop a clear vision for how the law could or should support a public health approach or shape the actions of individuals and institutions …

The Ssl Symposium On Editing: A Commentary, Ian Duncan Aug 2013

The Ssl Symposium On Editing: A Commentary, Ian Duncan

Studies in Scottish Literature

Reviews and comments on the preceding essays in the SSL Symposium on Editing Scottish Literary Texts, setting them in the wider context of critical discussion, responding to some of the earlier comments comparing the recent collected editions of Walter Scott and James Hogg, and arguing that the "authentically democratic" work of making a fuller range of Scottish literary texts available moves critical discussion forward from the "tedious zero-sum game" of debating a static canon.

For "The Prosperity Of Scotland": Mediating National Improvement In The Scots Magazine, 1739-49, Alex Benchimol Aug 2013

For "The Prosperity Of Scotland": Mediating National Improvement In The Scots Magazine, 1739-49, Alex Benchimol

Studies in Scottish Literature

Discusses the early years the the Scots Magazine, founded in Edinburgh in 1739, examining the aims of its publishers, and the development of its political and economic views before and after the Jacobite Rising of 1745-46, in light of contemporary Scottish ideas of social and economic improvement.

On Vernacular Scottishness And Its Limits: Devolution And The Spectacle Of "Voice", Scott Hames Aug 2013

On Vernacular Scottishness And Its Limits: Devolution And The Spectacle Of "Voice", Scott Hames

Studies in Scottish Literature

This essay asks why vernacular cultural expression has been so central to discussion of Scottish national autonomy, traces the literary and political contours of vernacular discourse in the period of Scottish devolution, and concludes with a provisional sketch of three "vernacularities" (democratic, romantic and identitarian) and with reflections on how literary criticism might move beyond the "representative” paradigms of vernacular voice to engage with voice as a principle of agency and action.

Protein Structure Validation And Identification From Unassigned Residual Dipolar Coupling Data Using 2d-Pdpa, Arjang Fahim, Rishi Mukhopadhyay, Ryan Yandle, James H. Prestegard, Homayoun Valafar Aug 2013

Protein Structure Validation And Identification From Unassigned Residual Dipolar Coupling Data Using 2d-Pdpa, Arjang Fahim, Rishi Mukhopadhyay, Ryan Yandle, James H. Prestegard, Homayoun Valafar

Faculty Publications

More than 90% of protein structures submitted to the PDB each year are homologous to some previously characterized protein structure. The extensive resources that are required for structural characterization of proteins can be justified for the 10% of the novel structures, but not for the remaining 90%. This report presents the 2D-PDPA method, which utilizes unassigned residual dipolar coupling in order to address the economics of structure determination of routine proteins by reducing the data acquisition and processing time. 2D-PDPA has been demonstrated to successfully identify the correct structure of an array of proteins that range from 46 to 445 …

A Multi-Physics Model For Solid Oxide Iron-Air Redox Flow Battery: Simulation Of Discharge Behavior At High Current Density, Meng Guo, Xuan Zhao, Ralph E. White, Kevin Huang Aug 2013

A Multi-Physics Model For Solid Oxide Iron-Air Redox Flow Battery: Simulation Of Discharge Behavior At High Current Density, Meng Guo, Xuan Zhao, Ralph E. White, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

A rigorous physics-based mathematical model for a solid oxide iron-air redox flow battery system is presented in this paper. The modeled flow battery system combines a Fe-FeO redox couple as the energy storage unit and a regenerative solid oxide fuel cell as the electrical functioning unit in a 2D axial symmetric geometry. This model was developed from fundamental theories of reaction engineering in which basic transport phenomena and chemical/electrochemical kinetics are included. The model shows good agreement with the experimental data. Simulation results for the chemical, electrochemical and transport behavior of the battery are discussed.

Dear Repose And Absent Solace: A Classroom Exploration Of U.S. Public Library Lgbt Collecting Behavior, Jennifer Weil Arns, Karen Miller Aug 2013

Dear Repose And Absent Solace: A Classroom Exploration Of U.S. Public Library Lgbt Collecting Behavior, Jennifer Weil Arns, Karen Miller

Faculty Publications

Significant attention has recently been focused on establishing the value of public library services, and in most cases, these efforts have explored their topic using currency-based measures. This paper describes a classroom project that introduces an alternate perspective related to the topic of tolerance as conceptualized by the U.S. Southern Poverty Law Center and UNESCO’s Declaration on Principles on Tolerance. The issue that interested the students was the information needs of people who might be considered different or distinct within some communities, and for this project they focused on children with an interest in LGBT materials, using two related research …

Sparstolonin B Inhibits Pro-Angiogenic Functions And Blocks Cell Cycle Progression In Endothelial Cells, H. R. Bateman, Q. Liang, D. Fan, V. Rodriguez, Susan M. Lessner Aug 2013

Sparstolonin B Inhibits Pro-Angiogenic Functions And Blocks Cell Cycle Progression In Endothelial Cells, H. R. Bateman, Q. Liang, D. Fan, V. Rodriguez, Susan M. Lessner

Faculty Publications

Sparstolonin B (SsnB) is a novel bioactive compound isolated from Sparganium stoloniferum, an herb historically used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an anti-tumor agent. Angiogenesis, the process of new capillary formation from existing blood vessels, is dysregulated in many pathological disorders, including diabetic retinopathy, tumor growth, and atherosclerosis. In functional assays, SsnB inhibited endothelial cell tube formation (Matrigel method) and cell migration (Transwell method) in a dose-dependent manner. Microarray experiments with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs) demonstrated differential expression of several hundred genes in response to SsnB exposure (916 and 356 …
