Where Evidence-Based Research Meets L2 Pedagogy: Classroom Instruction Of Russian Case Morphology, Ryder L. Myrick
Where Evidence-Based Research Meets L2 Pedagogy: Classroom Instruction Of Russian Case Morphology, Ryder L. Myrick
Senior Theses
Learners of Russian as a second language (L2) have long been documented to struggle with the Russian case system. However, pedagogy-oriented research on the acquisition of Russian case morphology remains limited. Addressing this gap, the current classroom-based and theoretically-motivated study reports a partial replication of Kisselev, Rubina and McManus (2025) with the addition of a delayed post-test, tutoring sessions, and improved materials. Quantitative findings match those of the original study, further supporting the effectiveness of Usage-Based instruction in Russian case pedagogy (90% average experimental-group score and 66% control-group score on a post-test). Qualitative analysis reveals additional factors shaping learning outcomes, …

A stereotype is defined as “a set of ideas that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong.”1 Even though stereotypes are understood to be harmful, “contributing to prejudice and discrimination,” they are still believed to have some “kernel of truth,” and are viewed as “overgeneralized beliefs about social groups in society.” These stereotypes are then used as propaganda to reinforce oppressive systems in the US.2 Stereotypes create the basis of opinions that are used to create caricatures. A caricature is “a picture, description, or imitation of a person in which certain striking …

Regulation Of Zygotic Genome Activation By The Nucleocytoplasmic Ratio, Lily Acker, Hui Chen
Regulation Of Zygotic Genome Activation By The Nucleocytoplasmic Ratio, Lily Acker, Hui Chen
Faculty Publications
During early development, embryos undergo the maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT), when control of development shifts from maternal factors to the newly activated zygotic genome. Decades of studies in various model organisms suggest that the nucleocytoplasmic (N/C) ratio is a key regulator of zygotic genome activation (ZGA), though this relationship is more nuanced in some organisms than others. Changing the nuclear content, nucleus size or cell size has been shown to shift the timing of ZGA. Mechanistically, the N/C ratio is linked to fundamental cellular processes that regulate genome activities, including nuclear import, repressor titration, activator accumulation, cell cycle lengthening, and chromatin …

Moderate to extreme preterm birth (< 32 weeks gestation) affects cardiopulmonary structure and function and is associated with increased risk of heart failure through adulthood. The rat hyperoxia (Hx) model (term born; postnatal Hx exposure) captures biventricular changes, including at the cell and organ scale, and pulmonary vascular remodeling seen in preterm humans. However, synthesizing these measures across scales and organ systems is challenging. We hypothesized that in silico modeling of biventricular mitochondrial, myofiber, and organ-scale function plus circulatory function could capture key features of cardiopulmonary abnormalities due to preterm birth. Therefore, we calibrated a multiscale model to subject-specific biventricular pressure–volume data previously obtained from Hx rats alongside normoxic (Nx) controls to investigate the abnormalities in cardiopulmonary function at multiple scales in this animal model of human preterm birth. The calibrated model demonstrates excellent agreement with the data and captures the expected pulmonary vascular changes and right ventricular dilation seen in preterm-born children. Our multiscale modeling approach captures cardiopulmonary abnormalities across spatial scales and provides an innovative approach to explore the consequences of preterm birth beyond preclinical experimental data alone. This is a foundational step in understanding the impact of preterm birth on cardiopulmonary disease in childhood as well as adulthood.

High Al-content AlxGa1-xN (0.7 < x < 1) quasi-vertical Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) with distributed polarization doping were grown on the bulk AlN substrate. They exhibit excellent rectification behavior with a large forward current density (~14 kA/cm2 ) and a high breakdown field of ~8.3 MV/cm. The SBDs also exhibited low ideality factors of (n~1.2) with a high Schottky barrier height (Φ b~ 1.7 eV). Thus, this study demonstrates the feasibility of the distributed polarization doping approach for high current–high voltage devices.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton was the first woman to gain the presidential nomination from a major political party in the United States, yet she was unsuccessful. The current study explores barriers to being elected as president for women generally and Hillary Clinton specifically. Using the propositions and tools of affect control theory, we demonstrate how women’s political representation shapes cultural sentiments about women and the president. In a nationwide sample of Americans surveyed shortly before the election, we find women’s representation on the state level influences voter preferences through these cultural sentiments: More women in politics makes a woman president …

In this paper, we study the convergence behavior of the diffuse domain method (DDM) for solving a class of second-order parabolic partial differential equations with Neumann boundary condition posed on general irregular domains. The DDM employs a phase-field function to extend the original parabolic problem to a similar but slightly modified problem defined over a larger rectangular domain that contains the target physical domain. Based on the weighted Sobolev spaces, we rigorously establish the convergence of the diffuse domain solution to the original solution as the interface thickness parameter goes to zero, together with the corresponding optimal error estimates under …

Introduction:
Conflict between nurses and doulas can contribute to miscommunication, delays in treatment, and decreased patient satisfaction, especially among marginalized populations. Nurses and doulas both play essential roles in supporting birthing individuals, yet their interactions are often strained by unclear role boundaries, differing philosophies of care, and institutional policies that fail to integrate doulas into clinical teams. The purpose of this study is to examine the underlying sources of tension between nurses and doulas and identify facilitators that support more effective collaboration within maternity care teams. Methods:
We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 participants (9 nurses and 11 doulas) recruited …General Timing Games With Multiple Players, Alexander Matros, Vladimir Smirnov, Andrew Wait

We examine innovation in an n-player market-entry timing game with complete information and observable actions. In our novel multi-player setup, we allow for heterogeneous payoffs between players and leader payoff functions to be multi-peaked and non-monotonic, only requiring that followers’ payoffs are non-increasing with the time of the leader’s entry. We outline the conditions under which an n-player asymmetric game leads to standard second-mover advantage and preemption equilibria. In the context of a two-player game, we provide a comprehensive characterization of the pure-strategy equilibria for a general case. This includes the potential for the emergence of a new …

Wadsley-Roth (WR) niobates have emerged as high-rate anode materials that can combine rapid ionic diffusion with good electronic conductivity. WR compounds have been defect-enhanced by limited annealing, however, such materials often contain multiple types of defects. In particular, both Wadsley defects (variable block size) and transition metal disorder have the potential to modify transport rates, however the corresponding effects are not well understood mechanistically. Here, MoNb12O33 (MNO) was calcined at two different temperatures to compare a defect-rich condition (MNO-800) with a proximal order-rich condition (MNO-900) as assessed through XRD, XANES, EXAFS, and STEM characterizations. Triangular lattices are widely employed for their high strength to weight ratios, yet their mechanical performance is sensitive to geometric features, particularly the nodal geometry. This study investigates the influence of nodal geometry on the mechanical behavior of equilateral triangular lattices across a broad range of relative densities using high fidelity finite element simulations. We characterize the elastic properties, and strength limits as functions of fillet radius. Our results confirm the expected trend that, in stretching-dominated lattices with low relative density, the introduction of fillets reduces both stiffness and buckling resistance. In contrast, at higher relative densities, filleted nodes can …

Medical drone delivery (MDD), defined as the use of uncrewed aerial vehicles to transport medical products, is an emerging technological innovation responding to persistent health supply chain challenges in rural and low-resource settings. Within sub-Saharan Africa, MDD systems have demonstrated large-scale success in improving key health outcomes, health supply chain efficiency, and reductions in medical product stockouts and wastage. However, the existing evidence base on the effectiveness of this technology is dominated by quantitative, performance-based evaluations, with limited emphasis on the community-driven mechanisms that shape such outcomes. Drawing on original qualitative research, this article presents a qualitative secondary analysis (QSA) …

Method
An observational, cross-sectional study was carried out. Endoscopic activity was defined by an endoscopic Mayo score >2, Crohn’s Disease Endoscopic Index of Severity (CDEIS) > 5, and/or the presence of a deep ulcer in any intestinal segment. Body adiposity was estimated using the body mass index, waist circumference, and waist-hip ratio (WHR). …

Effective rehabilitation tools are essential for improving language outcomes in chronic aphasia. Speech entrainment is a behavioral treatment that has shown promise in enhancing speech output in nonfluent aphasia, potentially by acting as an external mechanism to synchronize anterior and posterior language regions in the left hemisphere. Transcranial alternating current stimulation has been hypothesized to enhance functional connectivity between brain regions by amplifying endogenous oscillations. This proof-of-concept study explored whether high-definition tACS (HD-tACS) could improve speech fluency in nonfluent aphasia when paired with speech entrainment. In a double-blind, pseudorandomized study, 1 mA of HD-tACS at 7 Hz was applied to …
