Explaining Policy Failure: Japan And The International Economy, 1969-1971, Robert C. Angel

This paper examines the determinants of Japan's most serious postwar blunder: failure to define and implement effective and timely countermeasures to deal with its change from deficit to surplus international monetary status during the 1969-1971 period. It concludes that intense bureaucratic compartmentalization and a lack of supra-ministerial leadership of national policy were key determinants of this failure, leaving Japan's political system dependent upon irresistible external pressure (gai-atsu), in this case from the United States, to define and force implementation of necessary policy changes. This critical but largely ignored episode illustrates a negative aspect of the traditional insulation of Japan's national …

In The South Seas, Robert I. Hillier
In The South Seas, Robert I. Hillier
Studies in Scottish Literature
A general discussion of Robert Louis Stevenson's encounters with Pacific island cultures, which traces Robert Louis Stevenson's changing plans for a major book to be titled In the South Seas growing from his voyages in the Pacific; his frustrations with the task he had set himself, the disagreements and interventions in his plans by Sidney Colvin and Fanny Stevenson, and the limitations of the volume of the same title, using mostly unrevised material, published posthumously in 1896. Hillier argues that the book should be seen as the "writer's notebook," "an informative fragment," and sees Stevenson as drawing from it in …

Analysis Of Electrokinetic Data By Parameter Estimation And Model Discrimination Techniques, Prosper K. Adanuvor, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
An alternative approach to classical methods of electrochemical data analysis is presented. This alternative method is based on nonlinear parameter estimation and model discrimination techniques. The method is used to obtain the relevant kinetic and transport parameters and to elucidate the kinetic mechanism of O2 reduction at carbon and silver electrodes in alkaline electrolytes.
Oxygen Reduction On Silver In 6.5m Caustic Soda Solution, Prosper K. Adanuvor, Ralph E. White
Oxygen Reduction On Silver In 6.5m Caustic Soda Solution, Prosper K. Adanuvor, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
The cathodic reduction of oxygen in 6.5M membrane-grade caustic soda solution has been studied experimentally at a silver rotating disk electrode at 25°C. The results can be approximated by the parallel mechanism for oxygen reduction with catalytic decomposition of peroxide. Further analysis of this mechanism indicates that the sequential process with catalytic decomposition of peroxide predominates over the direct 4e– process. Direct application of the sequential mechanism to the data indicates that the latter mechanism with catalytic decomposition of peroxide much more accurately reflects the experimental results. The relevant kinetic parameters are calculated on the basis of …
