Paul Leicester Ford, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina Jan 1998

Paul Leicester Ford, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

This catalog accompanied the exhibit of portions of a gift of Ford material recently made to the University. Paul Leicester Ford (1865-1902) was the consummate bookman of the late nineteenth century. During his life, he successfully contributed to the world of letters through printing, bibliography, editing, scholarship and fiction. The collection contains almost forty books and pamphlets pertaining to Ford, including inscriptions, photos, and letters, as well as additional material by Noah Webster, Ford's great-grandfather, and other family members.

Theoretical Analysis Of Metal Hydride Electrodes: Studies On Equilibrium Potential And Exchange Current Density, Bala S. Haran, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White Jan 1998

Theoretical Analysis Of Metal Hydride Electrodes: Studies On Equilibrium Potential And Exchange Current Density, Bala S. Haran, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A theoretical model for the metal hydride electrode has been developed assuming that hydrogen diffusion in the alloy and charge-transfer at the surface control the discharge process. Theoretical equations for the dependence of equilibrium potential and exchange current density on the surface hydrogen concentration have been derived. These parameters have been used to correlate experimental data with the theoretical electrode discharge model. Analysis of both the experimental and theoretical discharge curves reveals a potential plateau determined by the magnitude of the interactions between the hydrogen in the alloy and the unhydrided metal. Neglecting these hydrogen-metal site interactions results in simulations …

The Effect Of Particle Size On The Discharge Performance Of A Nickel-Metal Hydride Cell, Jussi M. Heikonen, Harry J. Ploehn, Ralph E. White Jan 1998

The Effect Of Particle Size On The Discharge Performance Of A Nickel-Metal Hydride Cell, Jussi M. Heikonen, Harry J. Ploehn, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

We investigate the effect of particle size on the discharge performance of a nickel-metal hydride cell with a mathematical model. Electrodes with uniform as well as with nonuniform particle sizes are studied. With uniform particle size, the dependence of the particle-to-particle resistance on the particle size is taken into account. The optimal particle size depends on the discharge rate. Moreover, we show that under certain conditions it is advantageous to use a nonuniform particle size. In general, the higher the discharge current density, the more the particle size affects the electrode performance.

Π-Systems As Lithium/Hydrogen Bond Acceptors: Some Theoretical Observations, Salai Cheettu Ammal, P. Venuvanalingam Jan 1998

Π-Systems As Lithium/Hydrogen Bond Acceptors: Some Theoretical Observations, Salai Cheettu Ammal, P. Venuvanalingam

Faculty Publications

Ab initio calculations at the Hartree–Fock and correlated levels and density functional theory calculations have been performed with 6-31++G(d,p) and 6-311++G(d,p)basis sets on LiF and HF complexes of benzene, ethylene, and acetylene. Complex binding energies have been corrected for basis set superposition error, and zero point energy corrections have been done on Hartree–Fock binding energies. Computed results indicate that the complexes exist in different conformations and among them those with π-lithium and π-hydrogen bonds are the most stable. π-lithium bonds are stronger than π-hydrogen bonds. The computed binding energies and geometry of HF complexes correlate well with the available experimental …

Ab Initio And Dft Investigations Of Lithium/Hydrogen Bonded Complexes Of Trimethylamine, Dimethyl Ether And Dimethyl Sulfide, Salai Cheettu Ammal, P. Venuvanalingam Jan 1998

Ab Initio And Dft Investigations Of Lithium/Hydrogen Bonded Complexes Of Trimethylamine, Dimethyl Ether And Dimethyl Sulfide, Salai Cheettu Ammal, P. Venuvanalingam

Faculty Publications

Ab initio and DFT computations have been carried out on LiF and HF complexes of a set of n-donors viz. trimethylamine, dimethyl ether and dimethyl sulfide with a 6-31++G(d,p) basis set. The effect of correlation has been included with MP2, MP4 and DFT calculations. NBO analyses of the wavefunctions have been performed to examine the intermolecular interaction at the orbital level. Calculations reveal that these donors form strong n→σ* complexes and computed binding energies of the (CH3)2O···HF complex agree very well with the experimental binding energies from IR spectroscopy. LiF forms stronger complexes than HF, …

Evaluation Of Special Sensor Microwave/Imager Satellite Data For Regional Soil Moisture Estimation Over The Red River Basin, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Eric F. Wood, Bhaskar J. Choudhury Oct 1997

Evaluation Of Special Sensor Microwave/Imager Satellite Data For Regional Soil Moisture Estimation Over The Red River Basin, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Eric F. Wood, Bhaskar J. Choudhury

Faculty Publications

Regional-scale estimation of soil moisture using in situ field observations is not possible due to problemswith the representativeness of the sampling and costs. Remotely sensed satellite data are helpful in this regard. Here, the simulations of 19- and 37-GHz vertical and horizontal polarization brightness temperatures and estimationof soil moistures using data from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) for 798 0.258 3 0.258boxes in the southwestern plains region of the United States for the time period between 1 August 1987 and31 July 1988 are presented. A coupled land-canopy–atmosphere model is used for simulating the brightnesstemperatures. The land-surface hydrology is modeled using a …

The Coexistence Of Multiple Distribution Systems For Financial Services: The Case Of Property-Liability Insurance, Allen N. Berger, J. David Cummins, Mary A. Weiss Oct 1997

The Coexistence Of Multiple Distribution Systems For Financial Services: The Case Of Property-Liability Insurance, Allen N. Berger, J. David Cummins, Mary A. Weiss

Faculty Publications

Property-liability insurance is distributed through a direct-writer system, where agents represent one insurer, and an independent- agency system, where agents represent several insurers. Independent-agency insurers have higher costs than direct writers. The market- imperfections hypothesis attributes the coexistence of the two types of insurers to impediments to competition, while the product-quality hypothesis holds that independent-agency insurers provide higher-quality services. We measure cost efficiency and profit efficiency for property-liability insurers and find strong support for the product-quality hypothesis, implying that independent-agency insurers produce higher-quality outputs and are compensated by higher revenues.
