Cultural Diagnosis And The Monsters Of Victorian England, Victoria Elizabeth Kuykendall
Cultural Diagnosis And The Monsters Of Victorian England, Victoria Elizabeth Kuykendall
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the representation of invisible disability and neurodivergence in nineteenth-century British literature, arguing that literary texts both reflect and shape cultural understandings of disability. While much scholarship has focused on visible or physical impairments in Victorian fiction, comparatively little attention has been given to characters whose behaviors, emotions, or identities align with what today might be described as neurodivergence.
Drawing on Disability Studies, Mad Studies, and cultural theory, I propose the concept of cultural Diagnosis as a framework for analyzing how fictional characters become “Diagnosable” within both their historical and contemporary cultural contexts. Through close readings of Arthur …

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Culture Within An Algebra Unit: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Alesha Marie Love
Exploring Student Perceptions Of Culture Within An Algebra Unit: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Alesha Marie Love
Theses and Dissertations
Many barriers exist when teaching and learning mathematics. Although the mathematics curriculum is rigid and rigorous by design it is often not culturally relevant for the students engaging with the content. As a result, many students of color do not have an appropriate amount of representation to connect to a subject area that already seems exclusionary. This qualitative action research study examines the effects of introducing culturally relevant references into an Algebra unit for students of color, exploring the influence of exposure to cultural references and the minimal display of cultural and racial identities within the mathematics curriculum on students …

Compost Grinder For The University Of South Carolina Office Of Sustainability, Rori E. Pumphrey, Grace Yaegel, Aaron R. Sawyer, Bradley White
Senior Theses
This project originates from a collaboration with the USC Office of Sustainability, which seeks to improve the handling and processing of food waste generated on campus. The primary challenge is the difficulty in composting certain types of food waste, such as avocado pits, pumpkin rinds, and other dense or fibrous organic materials that are not easily broken down using conventional methods. Existing commercial solutions are often too large and expensive, or electrically powered, and are thus not well suited for the volume or nature of USC's food waste. To address these limitations, our team designed a manually operated food waste …
Examining Choices Of Sarcastic Responses In Dialogue With Virtual Interlocutors, Samantha Langley
Examining Choices Of Sarcastic Responses In Dialogue With Virtual Interlocutors, Samantha Langley
Theses and Dissertations
We report the results from three experiments examining people’s preferences for using sarcasm in conversation as a function of: 1. whether their interlocutor uses sarcasm during the conversation; 2. Their knowledge about whether the interlocutor has used sarcasm in a previous conversation; 3. The presence of prosodical and visual cues for interlocutors’ sarcasm. In each experiment, participants took part in two conversations, and we manipulated whether the interlocutors were sincere or sarcastic and whether they remained the same or changed from one conversation to the next. Experiment one used written conversations and experiment two and three used pre-recorded video clips …

Leveraging After School Programs As Resources To Support Adolescent Health And Wellbeing Within Underserved Communities: A Qualitative Study, Olivia Staples
Leveraging After School Programs As Resources To Support Adolescent Health And Wellbeing Within Underserved Communities: A Qualitative Study, Olivia Staples
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decade, youth have shown a consistent rise in stress, major depression, anxiety, and suicide, with underserved youth (low-income, minoritized communities) at greatest risk of exposure to chronic stress, related outcomes, and less access to health services (APA, 2017). Afterschool programs (ASPs), which serve as important resources in underserved communities, can be a critical support for youth health and well-being (Afterschool Alliance, 2019). However, few studies have examined ways in which ASPs address the challenges underserved youth face across their ecosystem to promote youth resilience (Jones & Deutsch, 2011). Using qualitative interview data from staff and youth across …

Thesis: Comparing Functional And Effective Brain Connectivity Metrics For Eeg, Diksha Srishyla
Thesis: Comparing Functional And Effective Brain Connectivity Metrics For Eeg, Diksha Srishyla
Theses and Dissertations
Background:Brain connectivity measures have been used to study communication between brain regions using electroencephalography (EEG). Functional and effective connectivity estimate the synchronization and the flow of information between regions, respectively. However, findings from studies using different measures to investigate similar connections do not converge. To guide the selection of functional and effective connectivity measures in future studies, we systematically compared a set of measures in the context of resting state EEG. We examined four functional connectivity metrics (coherence (Coh), the imaginary part of coherence (imCoh), the corrected imaginary part of phase lagged value (ciPLV), the debiased weighted phase-locking index (dwPLI)) …
Ai-Driven Autonomous Manufacturing: A Novel Taxonomy, Vision-Guided Planning, And Diversity-Aware Active Learning Frameworks, Ibrahim Yousif
Ai-Driven Autonomous Manufacturing: A Novel Taxonomy, Vision-Guided Planning, And Diversity-Aware Active Learning Frameworks, Ibrahim Yousif
Theses and Dissertations
Manufacturers face two opposing challenges: the escalating demand for customized products and the pressure to reduce lead times. Current manufacturing equipment, although reliable, operates at the limits of its technology and lacks adaptability to dynamic environments. This trade-off has been described as the optimal degree of automation, a threshold beyond which further automation incurs more cost than benefit. Smart manufacturing has introduced adaptive, data-driven systems, but many deployments still lack the contextual adaptability and autonomous decision-making required to handle unplanned disruptions. This underscores the need for intelligent, autonomous systems capable of real-time adaptation without costly reconfiguration, minimizing human intervention during …

Towards Accurate First-Principles Modeling In Heterogenous Catalysis: Ethane Dehydrogenation And Hydrogenolysis Over Pt Catalysts, Mubarak Ayo Bello
Theses and Dissertations
First-principles modeling has become central to heterogeneous catalysis research, offering mechanistic insight and guiding catalyst design, yet conventional approaches often struggle to accurately describe complex catalytic systems due to methodological uncertainties, simplified assumptions, and the structural diversity of nanoparticle catalysts. This dissertation addresses these challenges using ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) and hydrogenolysis (EH) over platinum catalysts as model systems. The first study benchmarks density functional theory (DFT) functionals against the random phase approximation (RPA) for the EDH network on Pt(111), identifying cost-effective functionals and demonstrating the efficiency of BEEF-vdW ensembles for capturing functional uncertainty. The second study (addressed in prior work) …
Multi-Perspective Feature Learning For Facial Expression Recognition In The Wild, Xiangyu Hu
Multi-Perspective Feature Learning For Facial Expression Recognition In The Wild, Xiangyu Hu
Theses and Dissertations
With the rapid progress of deep learning, Facial Expression Recognition (FER) has seen substantial improvements in performance, particularly “in the wild” meaning real world conditions. Despite these advances, most existing methods extract features from facial images as the sole emotional cues, which limits the model’s ability to capture the full complexity of human emotional expressions.
In reality, facial expressions are composed of diverse and multi-perspective information, including appearance-based cues and geometric structural deformations due to activations of facial muscles. Depending exclusively on one type of representation may fail to exploit the complementary nature of these cues, an issue that becomes …
New Approaches On Source Coding For Quantum Stochastic Sources And Implementation Of Quantum Fanout Gate, Rabins Wosti
New Approaches On Source Coding For Quantum Stochastic Sources And Implementation Of Quantum Fanout Gate, Rabins Wosti
Theses and Dissertations
The accurate computation of advanced quantum algorithms like Shor’s integer factorization, quantum phase estimation (QPE), and the quantum Fourier transform (QFT) requires quantum circuits of considerable size and depth. It is difficult to achieve reliable computation with deep quantum circuits due to the limited coherence times of the current noisy quantum devices. The quantum fanout gate is known to be a powerful primitive for reducing the depth of many quantum circuits (Høyer and Špalek 2003; Gottesman and Chuang 1999). Shallow or constant-depth quantum circuits are desirable for both near-term and fault-tolerant quantum computations as they reduce noise and allow faster …

Colaborate: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Enabling Inclusive Dialogue Of Emotional Regulation Resources For Young Autistic Children, Sarai E. Deese
Senior Theses
Emotion regulation (ER) is a critical developmental milestone and is often delayed or more difficult for autistic children. Publicly available resources for birth-5-year-olds with autism could benefit significantly by integrating the values of and information provided by autistic adults. However, existing resources may have poor accessibility, acceptability, and feasibility according to different groups within the autism community, creating a significant gap in effective support. This mixed-methods study investigated ER experiences, resource knowledge, and resource desire among autistic adults (N=4; Stage 1) and caregivers of young autistic children (N=4; Stage 2) to inform the development of acceptable ER supports. In Stage …

Journey To Proficiency: The Impact Of Explicit Problem-Solving Instruction In A Fifth-Grade Math Classroom, Brittany J. Terry
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study examined the impact of explicit problem-solving instruction on fifth-grade students’ mathematics proficiency and attitudes across skill levels. At the outset, students relied on rote procedures rather than conceptual reasoning, limiting their ability to apply skills in new contexts or understand why procedures work. Grounded in constructivist and sociocultural learning theories, the study aimed to move students beyond procedural fluency through explicit instruction of problem-solving strategies, modeling, guided practice, collaboration, and reflection. Over 8 weeks, 32 students participated in daily lessons. Findings from pre–post assessments, interviews, and portfolios indicate that explicit problem-solving instruction supported measurable growth in …
The Role Of Prelimbic Projections To The Rostromedial Tegmnetal Nucleus In Cue Discrimination, Emma Lane Carlson
The Role Of Prelimbic Projections To The Rostromedial Tegmnetal Nucleus In Cue Discrimination, Emma Lane Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
Maladaptive decision-making, such as persistent reward seeking despite negative consequences, is a hallmark of substance use disorder (SUD) and related psychiatric conditions. These behaviors are thought to arise from impairments in aversive learning and disrupted neural signaling that normally supports behavioral inhibition. The prelimbic cortex (PL) plays a critical role in encoding cue–outcome associations and exerting top-down control over behavior, while the rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) serves as a GABAergic inhibitor of midbrain dopamine neurons in response to aversive stimuli. Although both structures have been implicated in reward and avoidance processes, little is known about how direct PL-RMTg projections contribute …
The Processing Of Emotional Prosody And Semantics In Native And Non-Native Chinese Speakers, Cheng Xiao
The Processing Of Emotional Prosody And Semantics In Native And Non-Native Chinese Speakers, Cheng Xiao
Theses and Dissertations
Emotional information in spoken language is conveyed through both semantic and prosodic cues. While listeners interpret the meaning of utterances (what is said), they also detect the speaker’s emotional prosody (how it is said). For non-native speakers, processing these two types of information simultaneously can be challenging, particularly in a tonal language such as Mandarin Chinese, where the same acoustic feature (i.e., pitch) encodes both lexical semantics and emotional prosody. This dissertation reports a series of behavioral and fMRI experiments investigating how native and non-native Chinese speakers perceive and process emotional prosody and semantics in words and sentences. Behaviorally, results …
Developing A Comprehensive Schoolwide Discipline Plan In Title 1 Southern Schools, Rose Clark Kebe

Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored how teachers in Title I schools across the southern United States perceived and experienced school discipline practices. The study addressed the problem of inconsistent implementation of restorative and preventive frameworks, which has contributed to inequitable outcomes, teacher frustration, and lost instructional time. Although initiatives such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are mandated across many districts, inconsistent use and limited fidelity have restricted their effectiveness in improving equitable discipline and school climate.
The purpose of the study was to examine teacher perspectives to inform the development of a culturally responsive, schoolwide behavioral system grounded …
Anthropomorphism In Language And Thought: The Effect Of Agentive Linguistic Framing On Readers’ Perceptions Of Ai Animacy, Dawson Petersen
Anthropomorphism In Language And Thought: The Effect Of Agentive Linguistic Framing On Readers’ Perceptions Of Ai Animacy, Dawson Petersen
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decade, deep learning AI systems have gone from academic obscurity to near cultural centrality in the developed world. As these technologies become increasingly integrated into daily life, there is growing cause for concern about AI anthropomorphism—i.e., the perception of AIs as more human than they really are. Despite the potential risks, AI developers continue to market their technologies using agentive language that seems to be designed to encourage anthropomorphism. The current dissertation utilizes behavioral and eye-tracking methods to examine the relationship between agentive linguistic framing and AI anthropomorphism in both controlled judgments and automatic inferences. The results …
Application Of Machine Learning For Vascular System Analysis, Alireza Bagheri Rajeoni
Application Of Machine Learning For Vascular System Analysis, Alireza Bagheri Rajeoni
Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of vascular structures is critical for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating vascular diseases such as aneurysms, stenosis, and vascular calcification. Traditional methods often rely on manual interpretation of imaging data, which is time-consuming, subjective, and not scalable. This work explores the application of advanced machine learning techniques to automate and enhance vascular system analysis. Our contributions include achieving state-of-the-art accuracy in vascular segmentation, developing a machine learning pipeline to automatically quantify vascular calcification in peripheral arterial disease, and designing a multi-stage machine learning system for abdominal aortic aneurysm analysis that identifies aneurysm boundaries and estimates aneurysm volume in a …
Downwind-Upwind Flux Path Analysis Method For Model Reduction Performance Evaluations, Christian Robert Smith
Downwind-Upwind Flux Path Analysis Method For Model Reduction Performance Evaluations, Christian Robert Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Large, complex chemical kinetic models have long since been limited by the computational cost it takes to evaluate said model. Over time many reduction methods have been developed to combat this computational cost. However, very little has been done towards evaluating the limitations of reductions as a way of understanding the original model’s characteristics. This paper aimed to use a path flux analysis-based reduction algorithm to rapidly develop multiple reduced mechanisms for a 96 species FFCM-2 methane chemical kinetic model as well as an 858 species n-Dodecane chemical kinetic model. The goal of formulating these reduced mechanisms was to identify …

A Building Block Approach To Certification By Analysis Applied To A Ditching Analysis, Preliminary Studies, Sean Taylor
A Building Block Approach To Certification By Analysis Applied To A Ditching Analysis, Preliminary Studies, Sean Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Extended Twin-Engine Operations (ETOPS) certification ensures safe trans-oceanic operation of transport category aircraft. A critical aspect of ETOPS certification is compliance with ditching regulations. The importance of ditching analysis has grown significantly and come under greater scrutiny because of the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ incident. For transport category aircraft certified under 14 CFR 25 regulations, compliance with ditching requirements, rests on two major components. First, demonstrating acceptable aircraft dynamic behavior during the ditching event and second, ensuring the airframe can withstand the loads generated because of water impact.
Historically, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) relied on comparisons to existing aircraft with …
Development Of A Strategy To Neutralize Ccl8 Activity And Ablate Ccl8 Cellular Targets, Bernardo Chavez
Development Of A Strategy To Neutralize Ccl8 Activity And Ablate Ccl8 Cellular Targets, Bernardo Chavez
Theses and Dissertations
The chemokine CCL8 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-2) is a versatile signaling molecule involved in tumor progression, immune cell recruitment, and therapeutic resistance. Through activation of receptors including CCR1, CCR2B, and CCR5, CCL8 promotes leukocyte trafficking, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and the establishment of immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments. In breast cancer and inflammatory diseases, elevated CCL8 levels correlate with poor clinical outcomes, making it a promising therapeutic target.
A strategy was developed to block CCL8 activity and selectively ablate CCL8 receptor expressing cells. A neutralizing monoclonal antibody, 1G3E5, was identified from a panel of murine candidates based on high affinity CCL8 binding. Sequencing revealed two …
