Writing In The Legal Academy: A Dangerous Supplement, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Writing In The Legal Academy: A Dangerous Supplement, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Faculty Publications
This article explores the relationship of writing and speech in the legal academy through the lens of an ancient, embedded hierarchy that favors speech over writing. The article borrows the philosophical notion of the "dangerous supplement" to describe the role of writing in this hierarchy and argues that law schools have long seen only one aspect of this role, viewing writing as a "dangerous" curricular supplement, but failing to see why it is necessary to the existence of the remainder of the curriculum. This article examines the lurking distrust that surrounds writing in the legal academy. Part I of this …

"Where The Wappetaw Independent Congregational Church Stood...", Archaeological Testing At 38ch1682, Charleston County, Sc, Christopher Ohm Clement, Ramona M. Grunden
Research Manuscript Series
This report presents the results of limited archaeological testing at Wappetaw Independent Church (38CHI682), Charleston County, South Carolina. Wappetaw was founded by a group of 51 Congregationalist emigrants from New England, who arrived in the Carolinas around 1696. The primary focus of documentary research for this project was the earliest years of settlement; settlement patterning and motivations for immigration are examined. Archaeologically, remains of the last church to occupy the site (ca. 1783-1897) were securely identified, and a tentative reconstruction of the foundation of this structure is provided. Evidence of earlier structures was also encountered, and indicates that at least …

Evidence In The Global Village: The Promise And Challenge Of Computer-Assisted Research In Intercollegiate Debate, Pat J. Gehrke
Faculty Publications
The growing importance of research databases and the proliferation of evidence sources on the Internet have provoked responses from the debate community ranging from ecstatic hope to pronounced fear. The debate community should critically incorporate databases and the Internet into its research. The benefits of computer-assisted research are plentiful, if we can appropriately adjust as a community to the age of digitized research.
