Characterization of phytoplankton community composition is critical to understanding the ecology and biogeochemistry of the oceans. One approach to taxonomic characterization takes advantage of differing pigmentation between algal taxa and thus differences in fluorescence excitation spectra. Analyses of bulk water samples, however, may be confounded by interference from chromophoric dissolved organic matter or suspended particulate matter. Here, we describe an instrument that uses a laser trap based on a Nikon TE2000-U microscope to position individual phytoplankton cells for confocal fluorescence excitation spectroscopy, thus avoiding interference from the surrounding medium. Quantitative measurements of optical power give data in the form of …

The Political Fourth Amendment, Thomas P. Crocker Jan 2010

The Political Fourth Amendment, Thomas P. Crocker

Faculty Publications

The Political Fourth Amendment builds on Justice Ginsburg's recent dissent in Herring v. United States to argue for a "more majestic conception" of the Fourth Amendment focused on protecting political liberty. To put the point dramatically, we misread the Fourth Amendment when we read it exclusively as a criminal procedure provision focused entirely on either regulating police or protecting privacy. In order to see the Fourth Amendment as contributing to the Constitution's protections for political liberty, and not simply as an invitation to regulate police practice, we must take seriously the fact that the Fourth Amendment's textual purpose is to …

Pleading Disability, Joseph Seiner Jan 2010

Pleading Disability, Joseph Seiner

Faculty Publications

A significant failure. That is how the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") has been described by legal scholars and disability advocates alike. The statute was widely expected to help prevent disability discrimination in employment, but it has not fully achieved its intended purpose because of the narrow interpretation of the ADA by the courts. Congress recently sought to restore the employment protections of the ADA by amending the statute. Interpreting the complex and comprehensive amendments to the ADA will be a difficult task for the federal courts. Complicating matters further, the proper pleading standard for disability claims was left in …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Parental Stressors In Parents Of Diagnosed Versus Undiagnosed Children, Alicia Gomes Jan 2010

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Parental Stressors In Parents Of Diagnosed Versus Undiagnosed Children, Alicia Gomes

Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature has shown that stress can play a major role in family functioning and can be pronounced in families of children with special needs. The purpose of this study is to analyze potential stressors in families of children with special needs to determine whether a diagnosis for a child's medical conditions has any impact on these stressors. Diagnosed and undiagnosed participants were obtained from the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), the National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC), and the Syndromes Without A Name (SWAN) online discussion boards. Participants were solicited with an e-mail providing a link to an online survey …

Monograph Series

The African American Professors Program (AAPP) at the University of South Carolina is proud to publish the tenth edition of its annual monograph series. The program recognizes the significance of offering its scholars a venue to engage actively in research and to publish papers related thereto. Parallel with the publication of their refereed manuscripts is the opportunity to gain visibility among scholars throughout institutions in international settings.

Scholars who have contributed papers for this monograph are to be commended for recognizing the value of including this responsibility within their academic milieu. Writing across disciplines adds to the intellectual diversity of …

Clovis Excavations At Topper 2005-2007: Examining Site Formation Processes At An Upland Paleoindian Site Along The Middle Savannah River, D. Shane Miller Jan 2010

Clovis Excavations At Topper 2005-2007: Examining Site Formation Processes At An Upland Paleoindian Site Along The Middle Savannah River, D. Shane Miller

Occasional Papers – Southeastern Paleoamerican Survey

With this inaugural issue of the Occasional Papers series of the Southeastern Paleoamerican Survey, we are pleased to offer this monograph by D. Shane Miller which was based on his masters thesis research at the Topper site. His excavations, conducted over 2006-2007, resulted in a 64m square block, the largest contiguous unit yet excavated at Topper. Situated in a previously plowed firebreak on the southern hillside exhibiting partial erosion, it was decided to take advantage of this situation and recover the basal Clovis remains in the undisturbed portion of the profile. This strategy worked well and allowed Miller to fairly …

Disrupted But Not Destroyed: Fictive-Kinship Networks Among Black Educators In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Daniella Ann Cook Jan 2010

Disrupted But Not Destroyed: Fictive-Kinship Networks Among Black Educators In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Daniella Ann Cook

Faculty Publications

Drawing on Adkins’ (1997) notion of reform as colonization and using ethnographic data from African American teachers in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, this article discusses how black educators’ fictive-kinship (Fordham 1996, Chatters, Taylor, and Jayadoky 1994, Stack 1976) networks have been altered in the changing landscape of reform. I argue that the importance of fictive-kinship relationships among educators and students was ignored in school-reform efforts in post-Katrina New Orleans. Post-Katrina school reforms disrupted, but did not destroy, these fictive-kinship networks. I discuss three themes: (1) fictive-kinship networks created before Katrina cultivated an environment centered on cooperation, collaboration, and solidarity, …

African American Rhetoric Of Greeting During Mckinley’S 1896 Front Porch Campaign, William D. Harpine Jan 2010

African American Rhetoric Of Greeting During Mckinley’S 1896 Front Porch Campaign, William D. Harpine

Faculty Publications

African American speakers who participated in William McKinley’s 1896 Front Porch campaign events used epideictic rhetoric to address the issues of racial equality. They praised McKinley, but presented few arguments on policy matters. This rhetorical strategy helped them to advocate policies in a manner that would superficially appear to be ceremonial more than deliberative. Paradoxically, in doing so, the speakers advocated their views to ameliorate the injustices of the Jim Crow era, while adapting to the campaign’s rituals.

Collaboration Between Victim Services And Faith Organizations: Benefits, Chanllenges, & Recommendations, Dana Dehart Jan 2010

Collaboration Between Victim Services And Faith Organizations: Benefits, Chanllenges, & Recommendations, Dana Dehart

Faculty and Staff Publications

Although many crime victims seek support from members of the faith community, faith leaders may feel unsure of their abilities to assist. This paper describes findings from a descriptive needs assessment that preceded a national project to link faith-based organizations and victim service programs in five high-crime neighborhoods. Approximately 90 participants were interviewed, including faith leaders, victim service providers, and other professionals. A majority saw positive implications of faith-secular collaboration but also identified concerns. Findings focus on perceived obstacles and facilitators of collaboration, addressing climate for faith-secular collaboration, disciplinary differences, community engagement, and church-state separation. Implications for collaboration are explored …
