Lost In Doctrine: Particular Social Group, Child Soldiers And The Failure Of U.S. Asylum Law To Protect Exploited Children, Tessa R. Davis
Lost In Doctrine: Particular Social Group, Child Soldiers And The Failure Of U.S. Asylum Law To Protect Exploited Children, Tessa R. Davis
Faculty Publications
Exploited and persecuted, child soldiers live lives dominated by violence, fear, and death. Very few will find security within their own nations or abroad. Subjected to exclusionary bars or rigid interpretations of the particular social group ground for asylum, U.S. asylum law frequently functions to exclude those lucky few children who are able to escape their persecutors. Scholars writing on child soldiers and asylum law focus, almost exclusively, on the exclusionary bars and question of whether children are persecutors or victims of atrocities. These concerns are critical because how courts view child soldiers determines whether they will grant or deny …

Defining The Williamson's Plantation: Huck's Defeat Battlefield, Michael C. Scoggins, Steven D. Smith, Tamara S. Wilson
Faculty Publications
This report presents the results of historical and archaeological research to define the Revolutionary War battle of Williamson’s Plantation (Huck’s Defeat), located in York County, South Carolina. Analysis of historic documents, metal detector survey, and archaeological excavations at Historic Brattonsville revealed the location of the battlefield (site 38YK564) although there appears to be very little archaeological remains associated with the Williamson plantation house. Survey surrounding the site indicates that site 38YK564 is the only remaining remnant of the battlefield.

McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina engages audiences through a variety of experiences that provide information, generate awareness, and promote introspection on topics of regional life and the interdependent roles of culture, community traditions, and the natural and built environment. At the heart of these activities is an interpretive commitment to “telling the story of southern life.”
This paper was presented at the meeting of the College Art Association held in New York City February 9-12, 2011.
