From Accusation To Execution: A Case Study, Sophie Abber
From Accusation To Execution: A Case Study, Sophie Abber
Keck Undergraduate Humanities Research Fellows
This project centers on the question: how are dynamics present in the Salem Witch Trials related to contemporary religious issues surrounding gender and agency? An existential approach to studying the Salem Witch Trials is used, highlighting themes like agency and intersubjectivity to create a new understanding of these events (Jackson 2002; Arendt 1962). Not only has this not been done in previous scholarship, but existential analysis opens the door to making connections between the Salem Witch Trials and modern times. Women today are still constrained by social and religious norms and motivated by existential needs and questions. This will be …

Out Of The Shadows: Socially Engaged Buddhist Women, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Out Of The Shadows: Socially Engaged Buddhist Women, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
In this volume, stories about the experiences of women in remote regions like Mongolia and Zangskar appear alongside essays on philosophy and history. The fact that so many different voices are included and valued is profound testimony to Buddhist women’s diversity in terms of their educational background and approach to social concerns. It is an immense privilege to honor the hard work that these women are doing to benefit society, even against great odds. We are pleased to highlight these achievements, so that readers can learn more about the Buddhist traditions and the vibrant communities of Buddhist women practitioners around …

To Dust You Shall Return: A Theological Argument For The Human Compost Movement, Sydney N. Ederer
To Dust You Shall Return: A Theological Argument For The Human Compost Movement, Sydney N. Ederer
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research paper analyzes Catholic, Daoist, and Jewish beliefs on death, the body, the soul, afterlife, and after death rituals in order to build a connection between these beliefs and human composting practices. It uses these three religious traditions to find support for and recognize potential opposition against the human compost movement. These conclusions are in turn used to make a claim for human composting. Thorough research and a careful analysis of religious beliefs and traditions surrounding death and the body provides theological support for human composting as a recommended method for body disposal after death. Therefore, this research is …

Imagining Enlightenment: Icons And Ideology In Vajrayāna Buddhist Practice, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Imagining Enlightenment: Icons And Ideology In Vajrayāna Buddhist Practice, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Iconography has been used to represent the experience of awakening in the Buddhist traditions for millennia. The Mahāyāna Buddhist traditions are especially renowned for their rich pantheons of buddhas and bodhisattvas who illuminate and inspire practitioners. In addition, the Vajrayāna branch of Mahāyāna Buddhism presents a host of meditational deities (yidam) who serve as catalysts of awakening. These awakened beings are regarded as objects of refuge for practitioners, both female and male, who visualize themselves in detail as embodiments of specific enlightened figures, female or male, with all their enlightened qualities. These meditational deities, which are mentally constructed …

Mujerista Theology And Understanding Its Source, Aurora Espinoza
Mujerista Theology And Understanding Its Source, Aurora Espinoza
Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research
This research answers the key question on how did the Latino/a Theologian Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz develop her theology Focusing on only three of her basic writings I analyzed from what source(s) she developed her theology by investigating carefully the topics and context in her texts and her life experiences. With further background information that I received from my mentor, who was a colleague and friend of the late professor Isasi-Diaz, I was able to describe and explain how she developed her theology and her major contributions to the field. This was a directed literature review maintaining my emphasis on her …

Drag: Spectacle,Transformance, And The Construction Of Gender Utopia, Tyler J. Henry
Drag: Spectacle,Transformance, And The Construction Of Gender Utopia, Tyler J. Henry
Undergraduate Honors Theses
We live in a world of constant performance. Simultaneously being performer and audience, we navigate every day situated in the suspension of disbelief due to society’s spectacle. We are continuously enacting, evaluating, providing feedback, and adjusting in order to perform just well enough to be accepted into mainstream society. Gender is often understood and constructed in rigid binaries where performing too much or too little can lead to exclusion from acceptance into society. However, there are some who purposefully perform in order to criticize the binaries and cultivate an area of limbo between masculine and feminine. I am referring to …

An Unjust Dogma: Why A Special Right To Religion Wrongly Discriminates Against Non-Religious Worldviews, Kenneth Einar Himma
An Unjust Dogma: Why A Special Right To Religion Wrongly Discriminates Against Non-Religious Worldviews, Kenneth Einar Himma
San Diego Law Review
In this Article, I will argue that a special right to religious freedom is not morally warranted, and that hence such a right illicitly discriminates against non-religious worldviews. The principal argument here is that there is no adequate reason to think that religious worldviews implicate any interests distinct from those implicated by non-religious worldviews. While it is certainly true that religious worldviews warrant, as a matter of political morality, all the protections that non-religious worldviews receive, there is good reason to question what seems to have become a dogma among Western nations—namely, that religious worldviews deserve special protection....
