Irex And The Community Solutions Program, John Porten
Irex And The Community Solutions Program, John Porten
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
The community of practice (CoP) made up of the alumni Community Solutions Program (CSP) caters to a diverse and globally distributed group of professionals in the peacebuilding, humanitarian and development fields. Facilitating such a community without substantial reliance on communications technology and distanced relationship-building would be impossible. Yet this kind of distanced practice community faces a trust hurdle: members will only contribute quality content if they believe others will do the same. This creates a classic “free-rider” problem that leads to the death of many distanced practice communities. Despite this challenge, the CSP alumni that make up the program’s community …

The Philippine Economy During The Japanese Occupation, Jasper Lem
The Philippine Economy During The Japanese Occupation, Jasper Lem
Asian Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
The economy of the Philippines was derailed by the Japanese occupation during World War II. As an American colony before World War II, the Philippines had close amicable ties with the United States highlighted by promises of independence on July 4th, 1946. The Philippines also maintained a beneficial economic relationship with the States at this time through extensive foreign trade. However, because of the Japanese invasion, the Philippine economy was robbed of this profitable foreign trade and the promise of independence, severely crippling the island nation and her morale. The first policies implemented by Japan were designed to control the …

Pláticas Liberadoras: Testimonios Of Chicana/O Elders En La Comunidad De San Diego, Gabriel Nunez-Soria
Pláticas Liberadoras: Testimonios Of Chicana/O Elders En La Comunidad De San Diego, Gabriel Nunez-Soria
Dissertations
There is robust scholarship inquiring about many facets of critical consciousness (CC), most of which is centered around working with teens, youth, and educators. This study explored development of CC through testimonios of the lived experiences of eight Chicana/o elders in San Diego County. All eight of these elders participated in the Chicana/o movement during the late 1960s and early 1970s and carried these experiences with them into the present moment. Development of CC, the contextualized understandings of historical, social, and systemic aspects of our collective struggle against oppression through dialogue, reflection, and action, is a fundamental aspect of liberatory …

Designing Affordable And Viable Housing Solutions, Jean Jeremie, Juliana Maxim
Designing Affordable And Viable Housing Solutions, Jean Jeremie, Juliana Maxim
McNair Summer Research Program
Abstract:
There is a consistent housing crisis that is affecting our society today. Nearly 582,462 are homeless alone in the United States, with San Diego having the 4th highest unhoused population in the country (Hud, 2022). My research this summer seeked to understand the current living conditions of low-income families within our local community, with an emphasis on the El Cajon neighborhood in the Eastern part of San Diego County, and develop new architectural designs for sustainable and affordable housing. Through this lens I was able to see how a class in society just above homelessness lives day to day …
Atrial Fibrillation Management In Hispanic Adults, Tania Borja
Atrial Fibrillation Management In Hispanic Adults, Tania Borja
Dissertations
Background: Research has found atrial fibrillation (AF) to be the primary or a contributing cause of death on 183,321 death certificates, and an underlying cause of death for 26,535 Americans in 2019. Findings indicate an increased AF diagnosis in White people compared to racial and ethnic minorities, contrasting widespread findings of increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease and ischemic strokes in minorities. Significant disparities—by race and socioeconomic status in disease distribution and access to testing and lifesaving treatments—have been documented, specifically associated with social determinants of health (SDOH); i.e., the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. …
Defending Dobbs: Ending The Futile Search For A Constitutional Right To Abortion, Robert J. Pushaw, Jr.
Defending Dobbs: Ending The Futile Search For A Constitutional Right To Abortion, Robert J. Pushaw, Jr.
San Diego Law Review
In short, the Court is on the right track in cases like Dobbs by retreating from eccentric, unreviewable, common law policymaking and instead focusing on the Constitution itself.
Alas, average Americans, politicians, pundits, and even lawyers rarely read Court opinions but instead care only about whether they personally agree with the outcome, as the reaction to Dobbs illustrates. One can hardly blame them, as the Court’s constitutional opinions have often featured legal window dressing for results already reached on political or ideological grounds. Therefore, the current majority of Justices must illuminate the public about the Court’s proper role in interpreting …
Poland's Rule Of Law Snowball: The Increasing Severity Of The Rift Between Poland And The European Union, Ronan A. Nelson
Poland's Rule Of Law Snowball: The Increasing Severity Of The Rift Between Poland And The European Union, Ronan A. Nelson
San Diego International Law Journal
This Comment will analyze one of the most recent bouts between the EC and Poland in their ongoing struggle over the image of European democracy, rule of law, and national sovereignty: the European Court of Justice’s June 2021 decision in Commission v. Poland. The EU’s conceptions of western democracy and rule of law, including strict adherence to the impartiality of a judicial branch, created the EC’s legal theory for taking a stand against Poland’s autocratic government. However, Poland’s ultimate sovereignty, brought to heightened attention thanks to its far-right leadership, stands in stark opposition to the perceived overreach of the …

Outdated United States' Online Copyright Infringement Practices: What We Can Learn From The International Community, Ian Carstens
San Diego International Law Journal
Current United States practices and regulations regarding what is known as “the Server Test,” the DMCA, and online piracy need to be studied and brought into the realities of the modern world. With new technologies and uses being invented for the internet every day, the U.S. cannot afford to drag its heels any longer or it risks their statutory and case law becoming dangerously underequipped to deal with daily life. This paper proposes that the United States government listen to its own departments, the wishes of its citizens, and the examples being broadcasted internationally to form a new system to …

Intergenerational Peacebuilding Among Women: Leveraging The Power Of Collaboration, Elena B. Stavrevska, Youssra Biare, Ramatoulie Isatou Jallow, Nermine Mounir, Zarqa Yaftali, Heela Yoon, Briana Mawby, Hassnaa Tamam
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
Compounding crises related to inequalities and violence, health, the environment and food and water insecurity affect people across generations, and solutions to build lasting peace require the involvement and leadership of people of all generations. This report focuses on how generation and age differences affect peacebuilding work among women by analyzing how women and women’s organizations are using intergenerational strategies and partnerships to build peace.
Intergenerational Peacebuilding Among Women: Leveraging the Power of Collaboration argues that women’s and women’s organizations’ intergenerational peacebuilding efforts and potential must be better recognized, supported, developed and encouraged at the national and international levels alike. …

Intergenerational Peacebuilding Among Women (Case Study: Botswana), Ramatoulie Isatou Jallow
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
This case study is part of the Intergenerational Peacebuilding Among Women: Leveraging the Power of Collaboration report created by the Women PeaceMakers program. In this case study, Woman PeaceMaker Fellow Ramatoulie Isatou Jallow explores the state of intergenerational peacebuilding and coalition-building for women-led civil society organizations in Botswana. This research demonstrates that there is a need for dialogues around positive peace in Botswana, as well as for more synergy and trust between different generations of women. Furthermore, with more extensive education on the concept of intergenerational coalition-building, women and women-led CSOs can form these coalitions across generations more deliberately.

Nurse-Led Post Stroke Depression Screening (Psd) For Patients With Acute Stroke Using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (Phq9), Stefan Panov
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Introduction: This Evidence-Based Practice Doctor of Nursing Practice project aimed to implement a nurse-led post-stroke depression (PSD) screening using Patient Health Queastionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in a 12-bed progressive care neuro-stroke unit at a tertiary care hospital. The first goal of this project was to detect stroke patients at risk for depression who met specific inclusion criteria. The second goal was to provide depression education, initiate social work and medical referrals, and start pharmacological treatment to reduce the medical and socioeconomic burden associated with untreated PSD before discharge from the hospital.
Background: Globally, stroke is a prominent cause of death and disability. …
Queer Rights After Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Robin Maril
Queer Rights After Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Robin Maril
San Diego Law Review
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has ignited a firestorm of commentary warning that the end of Roe v. Wade would inevitably lead to the end of constitutionally protected queer rights. This article argues that it is far too soon to concede that Lawrence v. Texas and Obergefell v. Hodges are destined for the dustbin of history. Queer rights and abortion rights both advance equality and have significant liberatory value, but they are functionally different rights that rest on distinct legal foundations. Although both sets of rights may be essential to a progressive platform for inclusive political and social change, …
Russia's Roulette: Sanctions, Strange Contracts & Sovereign Default, Lev E. Breydo
Russia's Roulette: Sanctions, Strange Contracts & Sovereign Default, Lev E. Breydo
San Diego Law Review
The Russian Federation stands on the edge of financial abyss—excommunicated from the world economy and facing its first foreign currency sovereign default in over a century. Just deserts.
This Article is the first comprehensive, multi-disciplinary analysis of Russia’s sovereign debt and the consequences of a default. It makes a number of critically important findings with immediate implications for policy makers and practitioners navigating these wholly unchartered waters.
Based on an in-depth analysis of a quarter-century of Russian debt contracts, this Article posits a clear, geopolitically-driven evolutive patten and corresponding taxonomy. Starting with relatively “standard” terms in late-1990s vintage bonds, as …
Former Gang Members And The Particular Social Group Standard: Why America's Highest Court Should Green Light The Killing Of The Bia's Three-Prong Test, Téa Antonino
San Diego Law Review
This Comment establishes why the Supreme Court should clarify the elusive definition of “[m]embership in a particular social group” to resolve confusion amongst the circuit courts. Part II provides an overview of the historical context and legal basis for former gang members seeking asylum and withholding of removal. Part III explores the circuit courts’ disagreement behind the reasonableness of the BIA’s three-prong test for establishing a PSG claim: immutability, particularity, and social distinction. Part IV explains why the current three-prong PSG test is not entitled to Chevron deference, while Part V proposes the Supreme Court reimplement the Acosta factors—based on …
