Constitutional Rights Coming Home To Roost? Rights Internationalism In American Courts, James Allan, Grant Huscroft
Constitutional Rights Coming Home To Roost? Rights Internationalism In American Courts, James Allan, Grant Huscroft
San Diego Law Review
There is increasing pressure for American courts to accept the decisions of foreign courts and international tribunals as relevant, if not persuasive, authority in interpreting the US Bill of Rights. American courts are accused of being old-fashioned, if not parochial, and of failing to understand and respect international human rights norms. The authors suggest that American courts should be more wary than most when it comes to the decisions of foreign courts and international tribunals. These bodies speak the same language of rights, but they have different understandings of what rights are and how particular rights are to be understood. …

Sakyadhita Pilgrimage In Asia: On The Trail Of The Buddhist Women's Movement, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Sakyadhita Pilgrimage In Asia: On The Trail Of The Buddhist Women's Movement, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women was established in 1987 to address issues of gender equality in Buddhist societies and Buddhist institutions. Since then, through a series of innovative biannual conferences, Sakyadhita has worked to link women from different Buddhist traditions and cultural backgrounds and provide them with a forum where women’s voices can be heard. These conferences have generated a vibrant international Buddhist women’s movement that works for the welfare of the world’s estimated 300,000 Buddhist women. Because Buddhist institutions in Asian countries typically function independently and there is no central authority to oversee them or create policies, Sakyadhita’s …

Access to care represents a leading health indicator for meeting the complex healthcare and social needs of an exploding population of older adults living in the United States. This qualitative study was undertaken to discover the essence of access to care by community-dwelling older adults with Medicare and Medicaid. Participants were recruited from a metropolitan area in Southern California. Thirteen women and men aged 65 to 91 described their experiences with accessing care during a face-to-face, audio-recorded interview. The study aimed to: describe experiences of access to care, identify facilitators and barriers to care, and describe the effects of facilitators …

Personalization For English Learners At A Small Conversion High School, Mary Jewell Edd
Personalization For English Learners At A Small Conversion High School, Mary Jewell Edd
Dissertations
One of the most notable ways in which large, comprehensive high schools are working to meet the needs of the increasing numbers of English Language Learners (ELLs), and other students who may be struggling with academics, is by subdividing into smaller schools. One of the most appealing features of small schools is their emphasis on personalized instruction for students. While it takes many forms, personalizing education means knowing all students well and designing curriculum that meets their individual needs. Personalized learning environments hold enormous potential for improving the educational experiences, and even very lives, of English learners. The purpose of …

Saints, Soldiers And Sinners The Mormon Experience In Early California 1846-1857, Charles Lamont Gunderson
Theses
This thesis compares California's three mid nineteenth-century Mormon settlements their origins, purpose, and ultimate abandonment. I argue that despite their common bond of faith, these three settlements differed tremendously because they were created for distinct reasons and at a perplexing time in the Mormons history.
