Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Asterosaponin Extract From Asterias Forbesi (Desor), Leslie Alan Goldsmith

An asterosaponin extracted £rom. the Atlantic starfish Asterias forbesi (Desor) has been evaluated for pharmacological activity. The investigation has revealed that while the asterosaponin does not exhibit all the activities that would be expected, such as hemotoxicity to blood cells, cholinergic blocking activity, initiation of avoidance response reaction or production of autotomy, it does exhibit some unique properties not demonstrated by other asterosaponins. These activities include analgesia, anti-inflammation, and transient hypotension produced by a direct effect on the vascular bed. The bovine serum albumin assay for anti-inflammatory activity showed that a concentration of 500 μg/ml of asterosaponin caused an 85% …

Interaction Between Nigro-Striatal Lesions And Drugs Affecting Dopamine Receptors, Martin Dennis Hynes

Lesioning the nigro-striatal dopamine neuron system produces aphagia and adipsia with an intensity proportional to the size of the lesion. Those rats which received small lesions produced by a 1 mA current for a 15 second duration of the nigro-striatal system initially lost weight and then spontaneously recovered from that loss. Pretreatment with alpha-methyl-para-tyrosine (50 mg/kg) or haloperidol (0.4 mg/kg) given twice a day for a three-day period prior to lesioning facilitated the recovery. When large lesions (2mA for 30 sec) were used to destroy this dopaminergic neuron system, a severe aphagia and adipsia resulting in death occurred in all …

Witkin and his associates have done extensive work on the relation of various perceptual tasks to broader personality dimensions. An avenue opened by this research which was of particular significance to this paper concerns the relationship between field dependence-independence and the individual's sense of separate identity. The more articulated the cognitive style, the more there is a manifestation of a sense of separate identity which includes such things as an awareness of needs and feeling which the person recognizes as his own and as distinct from others. Phosphorus Exchange At The Sediment-Water Interface Of Selected Narragansett Bay Sediments, Michael J. Petti

Narragansett Bay sediments were sampled in the vicinities of Whale Rock, Prudence Island, and Field's Point. The sediments were used in a microcosm study to determine the release and uptake of nutrients from the sediments to the water column above. The nutrient investigated is phosphorus.

It was found that sediments can act as a source or sink of phosphorus to the water column above and affect the productivity of these waters. The release or uptake of phosphorus is a function of complex biological, chemical and physical factors which have been enumerated and described as a function of an exponential rate …
