The Curriculum Of Consciousness: The Disciplines From The Greeks To Post-Modernity, Daniel Novak Jan 1996

The Curriculum Of Consciousness: The Disciplines From The Greeks To Post-Modernity, Daniel Novak

Open Access Master's Theses

"The Curriculum of Consciousness" can be seen as one way of demonstrating how the progression of consciousness creates history, how humankind 'comes to' or awakes to its own nature. It is the story of how consciousness determines history and, coordinately, how history determines consciousness.

The focus of this historical-philosophical study is how the 'disciplines'- the arts, sciences and cultural pursuits in the widest sense (ranging from religion to commerce, technology, medicine and politics) -have been configured according to distinct priorities in the different eras of Western Civilization under the aegis of certain particular enterprises, i.e. philosophy among the Greeks, theology …

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Senescence And The Reversal Of Senescence In Soybean Cotyledons [Glycine Max (L.) Bass], Normand Edouard Allaire Jan 1996

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Senescence And The Reversal Of Senescence In Soybean Cotyledons [Glycine Max (L.) Bass], Normand Edouard Allaire

Open Access Master's Theses

Whole plant senescence is a programmed, endogenously controlled process in which cellular components are degraded and the resultant metabolites sequestered to other plant organs. All cells, with the possible exception of the meristem progenitors, go through cell division, expansion, elaboration of secondary structures to the primary cell wall, quiescence, and finally death. This senescence process is thought to be partially catalyzed by an increase in translation of degradative proteins coupled to a decrease in translation of vital proteins (Skadsen and Cherry, 1983). Inducers of senescence include wounding, fruit ripening, changes in hormone levels (auxin, cytokinins + auxin, Ca2+ …

Individual Group Flight Of European Starlings And Budgerigars In A Wind Tunnel Without A Horizon Reference, Robert G. Moyle Jan 1996

Individual Group Flight Of European Starlings And Budgerigars In A Wind Tunnel Without A Horizon Reference, Robert G. Moyle

Open Access Master's Theses

I studied the ability and willingness of European Starlings (Stumus vulgaris) and Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) to fly under different lighting conditions in a wind tunnel. My observations indicate that these birds can fly under conditions that supply no visual reference points, but their flight ability is more proficient when some light is available. The addition of a single horizon line to dark conditions improved the birds' flight ability and willingness, as indicated by an increase in the number of birds that took flight after landing. When small flocks were flown in the wind tunnel there was …

Applying The Concept Of Recreational Specialization To Rhode Island Alliance Anglers, Eric Asadorian Jan 1996

Applying The Concept Of Recreational Specialization To Rhode Island Alliance Anglers, Eric Asadorian

Open Access Master's Theses

Many recreationally popular marine species of fish are at or near historic lows in terms of their overall numbers. Many of these species, such as cod, summer flounder, winter flounder, and bluefish, are also commercially valuable. Fishery managers must be able to make allocation and management decisions that both protect the resource and maintain user satisfaction. The basis for achieving this goal lies in the understanding of what the users expectations, satisfactions and perceptions are related to their marine recreational fishing experience. It is often the case that a population of anglers are managed as a homogeneous group, with similar …

Water Circulation Patterns Detected In Avhrr-Sst Imagery In Relation To Larval Menhaden Abundances In The South Atlantic Bight, Heidi M. Franklin Jan 1996

Water Circulation Patterns Detected In Avhrr-Sst Imagery In Relation To Larval Menhaden Abundances In The South Atlantic Bight, Heidi M. Franklin

Open Access Master's Theses

Sea surface temperature (SST) imagery from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA-9 and NOAA-11 satellites was used to observe surface circulation patterns in shelf waters off the coast of North Carolina. I hypothesized that interannual variation in the frequency and spatial extent of Gulf Stream induced onshore pulses of warm water are a cause of inter-annually varying larval fish abundances arriving at the mouths of North Carolina estuaries. The Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, is an estuarine-dependent species which spawns offshore in 18-22°C water over a protracted period from November to April. A major menhaden spawning …

Algorithms For Missing Data Replacement In Time Series Analysis, Suzanne M. Colby Jan 1996

Algorithms For Missing Data Replacement In Time Series Analysis, Suzanne M. Colby

Open Access Dissertations

Three simulation studies were conducted in order to compare the accuracy of two algorithms for estimating missing observations in time series data. Each study was designed to test the algorithms under conditions which are likely to occur in applied behavioral research: (1) Study 1 examined the effects of model misspecification on the accuracy of estimation; (2) Study 2 examined the effects of systematically missing data (versus randomly missing data) on estimation accuracy; (3) and Study 3 explored the accuracy of the algorithms under conditions of nonnormality in the data series. The two algorithms, the EM (Estimation Maximization) Algorithm and the …

Age Differences In Multidimensional Self-Concept, Erika Natalie Gardiner Jan 1996

Age Differences In Multidimensional Self-Concept, Erika Natalie Gardiner

Open Access Dissertations

Since James (1890) introduced the psychological importance of the self, researchers have continued to debate several issues concerning self-concept and self-esteem. This study examined the ratings of multiple domains of self-concept, the importance of those domains, ratings of general self-concept, and self-esteem of 691 students from a North East school district in grades 4, 8, and 12. Students were chosen to represent three developmental levels: preadolescence, early adolescence, and late adolescence. All students completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, a form of the Harter Self-Perception Profile and its accompanying importance ratings. Significant age and gender differences in the ratings were analyzed …

Study And Analysis Of The Water Quality Of The Blackstone River Watershed, Shahriar Mahbub Alam Jan 1996

Study And Analysis Of The Water Quality Of The Blackstone River Watershed, Shahriar Mahbub Alam

Open Access Dissertations

Wet weather water quality of the Blackstone River was analyzed. Three wet weather events were successfully captured for the wet weather program: Storm 1 (September 22-24, 1992), Storm 2 (November 2-5, 1992) and Storm 3 (October 12-14, 1993). Grab samples were collected at specific time intervals throughout the Blackstone River watershed. The concentrations and EMC's (event mean concentration) for different constituents were determined. Two types of violations were compared for fecal coliform in the Blackstone River: log mean > 200 md/100 ml and 10% of samples exceeding 400 md/100 ml. Acute and chronic criteria were compared with the concentrations measured for …
