Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

An epizootic causing mortality among cultured summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus occurred in summer of 1998 at a land-based facility on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. The disease, flounder infectious necrotizing enteritis (FINE), was characterized by reddening around the anal area, distended abdomens filled with opaque serosanguineous fluid, enteritis and necrosis of the posterior intestine. In extreme cases of the disease, the posterior intestine was detached from the anus and was observed coming out the vent. The intestine of individuals that recovered from the dsease ended in a blind-sac; the abdomens of these fish were distended, due to food and water …

Parental Socialization And The Child's Development Of Internal Concepts Of Self And Others, Elena Sylvie Mirsky Jan 1999

Parental Socialization And The Child's Development Of Internal Concepts Of Self And Others, Elena Sylvie Mirsky

Open Access Master's Theses

The process by which children develop internal models of the self and others has been an area of much theoretical interest. This study explored the influence of parental affective and verbal socialization messages as well as children's own mastery experiences on the child's emerging internal models of self and significant others. The goals of the study were to replicate the association between parental control style and child compliance as reported in the child development literature and to examine the relationship between child compliance and child self-concept. The sample studied consisted of 46 children and their mothers who participated in a …

Morphological Variation Of Champia Parvula (C. Agardh) Harvey In Syntheic Medium With Special Attention To The Influence Of Bromide, Mary Beth Abel Jan 1999

Morphological Variation Of Champia Parvula (C. Agardh) Harvey In Syntheic Medium With Special Attention To The Influence Of Bromide, Mary Beth Abel

Open Access Master's Theses

While under investigation as a toxicity-testing organism, female gametophytes of the small marine red alga, Champia parvula (C. Agardh) Harvey exhibited a loss of diaphragm formation in indeterminately growing branch tips. Further study revealed that this change of morphology occurred when bromide was omitted from nutrient enriched, synthetic seawater (Thursby and Harlin 1984).

The goals of this project were to verify and further document the loss of .diaphragm formation in C. parvula under bromide minus and other culture conditions and to observe developmental events associated with the loss of diaphragm formation. The working hypothesis was that diaphragm formation is dependent …

The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplement On Liver Mitochondrial Profiles In Mice, Karen Ann Agostinucci Jan 1999

The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplement On Liver Mitochondrial Profiles In Mice, Karen Ann Agostinucci

Open Access Master's Theses

Cell oxidative damage caused by free radical production during respiration plays a major role in tissue dysfunction. Mitochondria are subcellular sites for oxidative phosphorylation and are the major source of free radicals. Their high oxidative activity makes them susceptible to oxidative damage. Antioxidants protect the cell against oxidative damage, but when defenses are not adequate cells are subjected to oxidative stress. A lack of vitamin E, and selenium results in enlargement ofliver mitochondria, suggesting mitochondrial fusion, and an inability to divide. Recent studies suggest that aging is associated with mitochondrial enlargement and elongation, and that these mitochondria are less oxidatively …

The Analysis Of The Forestry Practices Referenda In The State Of Maine In 1996 And 1997, Douglas G. Mcgovern Jan 1999

The Analysis Of The Forestry Practices Referenda In The State Of Maine In 1996 And 1997, Douglas G. Mcgovern

Open Access Master's Theses

This research project describes and explains the 1996 and 1997 Maine forestry practices referenda, which came about amid heightened concern about threats to Maine's large tracts of privately owned forestlands, part of a larger area known as the Northern Forest. It explores the factors influencing how people cast their votes in the two referenda and the ties between these factors and the spatial patterns of the votes.

This research shows that in addition to concern for the environment, economic considerations of individuals were an important factor with regard to how people cast their votes. Attempts to influence voter opinion by …

Landscape And Habitat Predictors Of Canada Warbler (Wilsonia Canadensis) And Northern Waterthrush (Seiurus Noveboracensis) Occurrence In Rhode Island Swamps, Nicholas A. Miller Jan 1999

Landscape And Habitat Predictors Of Canada Warbler (Wilsonia Canadensis) And Northern Waterthrush (Seiurus Noveboracensis) Occurrence In Rhode Island Swamps, Nicholas A. Miller

Open Access Master's Theses

Canada Warblers (Wilsonia canadensis) and Norther Waterthrushes (Seiurus noveboracensis) – both fores-interior, neotropical migrants – are the only breeding bird species in Rhode Island restricted to forested wetlands. Despite continuing alterations of wetlands and surrounding upland landscapes, primarily as a result of urbanization, the factors affecting the distribution of these two species have not previously been investigated. The need for such research is urgent, especially given the long-term decline in Canada Warbler populations in the Northeast. I examined the relative influence of forest habitat characteristics and landscape context on the presence of both species in 80 …

Characterization Of A Putative Transcription Factor, Maowen Hu Jan 1999

Characterization Of A Putative Transcription Factor, Maowen Hu

Open Access Master's Theses

Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins belong to a large family of transcription factors that are known to play important roles in cell proliferation, differentiation and oncogenesis. These proteins are structurally featured by a bHLH motif, which is responsible for protein dimerization and sequence-specific DNA binding (e.g., E-box). Recently we isolated a cDNA from a human liver library by a gene trapping method. Based on the Kozak rule, this cDNA encodes a protein with 415 amino acids, which is hereafter designated as CCAF. The objective of this thesis is to establish the molecular mass of this protein and to test the hypothesis …

The Reproductive Biology Of The Goosefish, Lophius Americanus, Catalina M. Martinez Jan 1999

The Reproductive Biology Of The Goosefish, Lophius Americanus, Catalina M. Martinez

Open Access Master's Theses

The goosefish, Lophius americanus, is a commercially important fish species that is currently overfished. Little is known about the goosefish and the goal of this study was to provide a maturity schedule to assist fisheries managers in the development of an updated minimum catch size. My objectives were to describe gamete and gonad development by applying histochemical techniques to the analysis of gonadal tissue collected in several seasons from wild goosefish.

Gonadal tissue samples were collected during the winter, summer, and fall 1998 National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) survey cruises, and summer samples were also collected from the commercial …

Marine Resource Management On Anguilla: The Human Dimension, William R. Stevenson Jr. Jan 1999

Marine Resource Management On Anguilla: The Human Dimension, William R. Stevenson Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examined the perception of local stakeholders on the island of Anguilla in regards to the health, current management, and future management of their marine resources. Little quantitative data is available for any of Anguilla's marine resources specifically lobster and reef fish populations or rates of harvest. Anecdotal reports describe these resources as in decline. A descriptive survey was used to gather information on the stakeholder's perception of the health, the current management, and future management of their marine resources. A cornerstone of the study was that a polarization among stakeholder groups would emerge. This divergence of opinion did …

Attatchment Classification Among 18 Month Old Children Of Adolescent Mothers, Lynne M. Andreozzi Jan 1999

Attatchment Classification Among 18 Month Old Children Of Adolescent Mothers, Lynne M. Andreozzi

Open Access Dissertations

This investigation was conducted to examine the nature of the attachment relationship among children of adolescent mothers using a standard measure known as the Strange Situation procedure. This project compared the attachment relationships of children of adolescent mothers with children of older, non-adolescent adult mothers. Given the paucity of research on attachment among infants of adolescent mothers, the rationale for conducting this study was to supplement an existing weak literature base. The major prediction of this study was that there would be significantly more insecurity among 18-month-old infants of adolescent mothers. The study further attempted to examine this relationship in …

Spatial Patterns In Ocean Color And Temperature Maps: Fronts, Fractals, And Ecological Considerations, Christine Chan Jan 1999

Spatial Patterns In Ocean Color And Temperature Maps: Fronts, Fractals, And Ecological Considerations, Christine Chan

Open Access Dissertations

Heterogeneity in ocean patterns is at once intriguing and problematic. Processes such as primary production or mixing occur on a range of scales in time and in space; variability must be captured at appropriate scales with tools flexible enough to detect changes in pattern-generating processes. Frontal and fractal analyses were applied to satellite-derived sea surface temperature and ocean color imagery to describe patterns in Northwestern Atlantic shelf and slope seas. On a seasonal scale, climatological thermal fronts were most frequent in winter and were found on the continental shelf south of the NY Bight and alongshore in the Gulf of …

Pharmacodynamic Parameters: Influence On Dose-Response Relationship And Estimation, Suzette F. Rashed Jan 1999

Pharmacodynamic Parameters: Influence On Dose-Response Relationship And Estimation, Suzette F. Rashed

Open Access Dissertations

Overall drug response is controlled by pharmacodynamic (PD) phase and pharmacokinetic (PK) phase. Over the last twenty years, much greater emphasis has been placed in PK phase because its outcome is much easier to measure and model compared to that of PD. In fact, PD and its parameters play an important role in controlling drug response. This document consists of three studies. The first study demonstrates through computer simulations using STELLA (High Performance System) the manner in which the main PD parameters influence the dose response relationship. A one compartment PK model linked to a sigmoid Emax model through …

Adsorbtion Of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons Contaminated Water With Granular Activated Carbon, Adedeji O. Adeyoye

Open Access Master's Theses

This study evaluated the effectiveness of granular activated carbon in treating hydrocarbons contaminated groundwater. Contaminated groundwater samples were obtained from the airfield refueling area of the former Davisville - Quonset Point Naval Complex at North Kingstown, R.I. Previous studies on the site showed the contaminants as a mixture of JP 5 and aviation fuel, but because of the changes that might have taken place within the constituents of the groundwater contaminants due to aging, volatilization, exposure and interaction with the soils minerals and groundwater, the contaminants are characterized as Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH).

This study conducted isotherm studies on the …

Remote Sensing Observations Of Winter Phytoplankton Blooms Southwest Of The Luzon Strait In The South China Sea, Dan-Ling Tang, I-Hsun Ni, Dana R. Kester, Frank E. Müller-Karger

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The Luzon Strait is a channel between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. This area is traditionally classified as an oligotrophic zone with low primary productivity. Even so, high concentrations of pigment were detected 100 km southwest of the Strait through analysis of historical Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) data that the Nimbus-7 satellite collected during the winters of 1979 to 1986. These blooms were observed in December 1979, February 1983, February 1985, and January 1986, when sea surface temperatures measured with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAAs) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) were 23 to …

Flight Of The Vampire: Ontogenetic Gait-Transition In Vampyroteuthis Infernalis (Cephalopoda: Vampyromorpha), Brad A. Seibel, Erik V. Thuesen, James J. Childress Jul 1998

Flight Of The Vampire: Ontogenetic Gait-Transition In Vampyroteuthis Infernalis (Cephalopoda: Vampyromorpha), Brad A. Seibel, Erik V. Thuesen, James J. Childress

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Vampyroteuthis infernalis is a cosmopolitan cephalopod that lives in the oxygen minimum layer between 600 and 800 m depth. Morphometric and physiological studies have indicated that V. infernalis has little capacity for jet propulsion and has the lowest metabolic rate ever measured for a cephalopod. Because fin swimming is inherently more efficient than jet propulsion, some of the reduction in energy usage relative to other cephalopods may result from the use of fins as the primary means of propulsion. V. infernalis undergoes a rapid metamorphosis which consists of changes in the position, size and shape of the fins. This …
