Three-Dimensional Kinematics And Wake Structure Of The Pectoral Fins During Locomotion In Leopard Sharks Triakis Semifasciata, C. D. Wilga, George V. Lauder

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The classical theory of locomotion in sharks proposes that shark pectoral fins are oriented to generate lift forces that balance the moment produced by the oscillating heterocercal tail. Accordingly, previous studies of shark locomotion have used fixed-wing aircraft as a model assuming that sharks have similar stability and control mechanisms. However, unlike airplanes, sharks are propelled by undulations of the body and tail and have considerable control of pectoral fin motion. In this paper, we use a new approach to examine the function of the pectoral fins of leopard sharks, Triakis semifasciata, during steady horizontal swimming at speeds of …

Export Production And Carbonate Dissolution In The Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean Over The Past 1 Myr, R. W. Murray, Christopher W. Knowlton, M. Leinen, A. C. Mix, C. H. Polsky Jan 2000

Export Production And Carbonate Dissolution In The Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean Over The Past 1 Myr, R. W. Murray, Christopher W. Knowlton, M. Leinen, A. C. Mix, C. H. Polsky

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

In order to quantify changes in export production and carbonate dissolution over the past 1 Myr in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean we analyzed Ba, P, Al Ti, and Ca in 1106 samples from five piston cores gathered from 5°S to 4°N at 140°W. We focused on Ba/Ti, Al/Ti, and P/Ti ratios as export proxies and employed areally integrated time slice as well as time series strategies. Carbonate maxima from 0–560 kyr are characterized by 15–30% greater export than carbonate minima. The increases in export fall on glacial δ18O transitions rather than glacial maxima. From 560–800 kyr, overlapping …

Green-Water Rearing And Delayed Weaning Improve Growth And Survival Of Summer Flounder, David A. Bengtson, Lindsay Lydon, Jeffrey D. Ainley Jul 1999

Green-Water Rearing And Delayed Weaning Improve Growth And Survival Of Summer Flounder, David A. Bengtson, Lindsay Lydon, Jeffrey D. Ainley

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

The advent of an aquaculture industry for summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus requires that optimal methods be identified for hatchery production. Two experiments were conducted to test strategies for larval rearing and for weaning newly metamorphosed juveniles from live to artificial diets. Rearing of larvae in ‘‘green water’’ (with algae added) resulted in better survival (76.1 6 6.5%) from days 5–42 after hatching than did rearing in ‘‘clear water’’ (no algae added; 27.8 6 13.6%), although no differences in growth were apparent. When fish were weaned from live feed beginning at day 45 versus day 57 by either a ‘‘gradual’’ method …

Locomotion In Sturgeon: Function Of The Pectoral Fins, C. D. Wilga, G. V. Lauder Jan 1999

Locomotion In Sturgeon: Function Of The Pectoral Fins, C. D. Wilga, G. V. Lauder

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Pectoral fins are one of the major features of locomotor design in ray-finned fishes and exhibit a well-documented phylogenetic transition from basal to derived clades. In percomorph fishes, the pectoral fins are often used to generate propulsive force via oscillatory movements, and pectoral fin propulsion in this relatively derived clade has been analyzed extensively. However, in the plesiomorphic pectoral fin condition, exemplified by sturgeon, pectoral fins extend laterally from the body in a generally horizontal orientation, have been assumed to generate lift to balance lift forces and moments produced by the heterocercal tail, and are not oscillated to generate propulsive …

Metamorphosis In The Summer Flounder Paralichthys Dentatus: Changes In Gill Mitochondria-Rich Cells, Alex M. Schreiber, Jennifer Specker Jan 1999

Metamorphosis In The Summer Flounder Paralichthys Dentatus: Changes In Gill Mitochondria-Rich Cells, Alex M. Schreiber, Jennifer Specker

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Salinity tolerance changes during larval development and metamorphosis in the summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus) and other teleosts. The physiological mechanisms responsible for osmoregulation during these early stages of development are not well understood. This study characterized changes in ultrastructure, intracellular membranes and immunoreactive Na+/K+-ATPase of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) in the gills of summer flounder during metamorphosis. Gill ultrastructure at the start of metamorphosis revealed only one type of MRC, which had weak reactivity to osmium and lacked a well-defined apical pit. In juveniles, two types of MRCs were observed: light-staining MRCs (LMRCs) with weak reactivity to …

Influence Of Summer Biogeography On Wood Warbler Stopover Abundance, Jeffrey F. Kelly, Rob Smith, Deborah M. Finch, Frank R. Moore, Wang Yong Jan 1999

Influence Of Summer Biogeography On Wood Warbler Stopover Abundance, Jeffrey F. Kelly, Rob Smith, Deborah M. Finch, Frank R. Moore, Wang Yong

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We evaluated the effect of summer biogeography of migrant wood warblers (Parulidae) on their stopover abundance. To characterize abundance patterns, we used mistnet capture data from spring and fall migration in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, spring migration on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, and fall migration on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. To describe the summer biogeography of 47 species of wood warblers, we used indices of their summer range size, their summer density, and distance between their summer ranges and our netting sites. Multiple linear regressions indicated that biogeographic indices explained 55% and 49% of variation …

Induction Of Protease Activity In Vibrio Anguillarum By Gastrointestinal Mucus, Steven M. Denkin, David R. Nelson Jan 1999

Induction Of Protease Activity In Vibrio Anguillarum By Gastrointestinal Mucus, Steven M. Denkin, David R. Nelson

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The effect of gastrointestinal mucus on protease activity in Vibrio anguillarum was investigated. Protease activity was measured by using an azocasein hydrolysis assay. Cells grown to stationary phase in mucus (200 mg of mucus protein/ml) exhibited ninefold-greater protease activity than cells grown in Luria-Bertani broth plus 2% NaCl (LB20). Protease induction was examined with cells grown in LB20 and resuspended in mucus, LB20, nine-salts solution (NSS [a carbon-, nitrogen-, and phosphorus-free salt solution]), or marine minimal medium (3M) (~109 CFU/ml). Induction of protease activity occurred 60 to 90 min after addition of mucus and was ≥ 70-fold greater than …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The growth physiology of Escherichia coli during colonization of the intestinal tract was studied with four animal models: the streptomycin-treated mouse carrying a reduced microflora, the monoassociated mouse with no other microflora than the introduced strain, the conventionalized streptomycin-treated mouse, and the conventionalized monoassociated mouse harboring a full microflora. A 23S rRNA fluorescent oligonucleotide probe was used for hybridization to whole E. coli cells fixed directly after being taken from the animals, and the respective growth rates of E. coli BJ4 in the four animal models were estimated by correlating the cellular concentrations of ribosomes with the growth rate of …

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger Jan 1999

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger

Open Access Master's Theses

The Cretan wild goat (Capra aegagrus cretensis Lydekker) or agrimi is the last existing sub-species of free ranging bezoar goat (C. a. aegagrus) in Europe. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Protection of this animal is very important to the people of Greece and Crete due to the agrimi' s historic cultural importance. To examine genetic variation within and among wild and domestic goats (C. hircus), 6 polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to compare the genetic structure of 5 …

Consumption Rates Of Summer Flounder Larvae On Rotifer And Brine Shrimp Prey During Larval Rearing, David A. Bengtson, Timothy R. Gleason, Mohamad A. Hossain Jan 1999

Consumption Rates Of Summer Flounder Larvae On Rotifer And Brine Shrimp Prey During Larval Rearing, David A. Bengtson, Timothy R. Gleason, Mohamad A. Hossain

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Larval summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus were hatched and reared through metamorphosis in the laboratory. At several points in the rearing cycle, larvae were removed from their rearing chambers and placed in small bowls, where they were fed known quantities of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (flounder larvae age 6, 10, or 13 d posthatch) or nauplii of brine shrimp Artemia sp. (flounder larvae age 23, 28, 34, or 47 d posthatch). Counts of prey organisms remaining in the bowls after 24 h allowed us to calculate numbers of prey consumed. Consumption rates increased from 62 rotifers/24 h (6-d larvae) to 301 …
