Biosecurity: Moving Toward A Comprehensive Approach, Laura A. Meyerson, Jamie K. Reaser Jul 2002

Biosecurity: Moving Toward A Comprehensive Approach, Laura A. Meyerson, Jamie K. Reaser

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Biosecurity itself is more than a buzzword; it is the vital work of strategy, efforts, and planning to protect human, animal, and environmental health against biological threats. The primary goal of biosecurity is to protect against the risk posed by disease and organisms; the primary tools of biosecurity are exclusion, eradication, and control, supported by expert system management, practical protocols, and the rapid and efficient securing and sharing of vital information. Biosecurity is therefore the sum of risk management practices in defense against biological threats. (NASDA 2001, p. 1

Exploring The Sialome Of The Tick Ixodes Scapularis, Jesus G. Valenzuela, Ivo M. B. Francischetti, Van My Pham, Mark K. Garfield, Thomas N. Mather, José M. C. Ribeiro

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

To attempt description of the set of mRNA and protein (sialome) expressed in the salivary glands of the tick Ixodes scapularis, we randomly sequenced 735 clones of a full-length salivary gland cDNA library of this arthropod and performed Edman degradation of protein bands from salivary gland homogenates (SGH) and saliva separated by SDS-PAGE. The sequences were grouped into 410 clusters, of which 383 are not associated with known I. scapularis sequences. 15- and 17-protein bands from PAGE yielded amino-terminal information on the saliva and salivary gland gels, respectively. We attributed 19 of these sequences to translation products of the …

Genetic Variants Of Ehrlichia Phagocytophila, Rhode Island And Connecticut, Robert F. Massung, Michael J. Mauel, Jessice H. Owens, Nancy Allan, Joshua W. Courtney, Kirby C. Staffordt, Thomas N. Mather Jan 2002

Genetic Variants Of Ehrlichia Phagocytophila, Rhode Island And Connecticut, Robert F. Massung, Michael J. Mauel, Jessice H. Owens, Nancy Allan, Joshua W. Courtney, Kirby C. Staffordt, Thomas N. Mather

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Primers were used to amplify a 561-bp region of the 16S rRNA gene of Ehrlichia phagocytophila from Ixodes scapularis ticks and small mammals collected in Rhode Island and Connecticut. DNA sequences for all 50 E. phagocytophila-positive samples collected from 1996 through 1998 in southwestern Connecticut were identical to the sequence reported for E. phagocytophila DNA from confirmed human cases. In contrast, the sequences from 92 of 123 E. phagocytophila-positive Rhode Island samples collected from 1996 through 1999 included several variants differing by 1-2 nucleotides from that in the agent infecting humans. While 11.9% of 67 E. …

The Horse And Deer Flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) Of Rhode Island, Kristen Bartlett, Steven R. Alm, Roger Lebrun, Howard S. Ginsberg Jan 2002

The Horse And Deer Flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) Of Rhode Island, Kristen Bartlett, Steven R. Alm, Roger Lebrun, Howard S. Ginsberg

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The Tabanidae of Rhode Island were surveyed using Rhode Island canopy traps placed at 20 locations in the state during the summers of 1999 and 2000. In total, 5,120 flies were collected, which included 55 species in the genera Chrysops, Hybomitra, Tabanus, Merycomyia, and Stonemyia. Distributional and ecological information is provided for each species in Rhode Island.

Potential Nontarget Effects Of Metarhizium Anisopliae (Deuteromycetes) Used For Biological Control Of Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae), Howard S. Ginsberg, Roger A. Lebrun, Klaus Heyer, Elyes Zhioua Jan 2002

Potential Nontarget Effects Of Metarhizium Anisopliae (Deuteromycetes) Used For Biological Control Of Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae), Howard S. Ginsberg, Roger A. Lebrun, Klaus Heyer, Elyes Zhioua

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The potential for nontarget effects of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin, when used for biological control of ticks, was assessed in laboratory trials. Fungal pathogenicity was studied against convergent ladybird beetles, Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville, house crickets, Acheta domesticus (L.), and the milkweed bugs Oncopeltus fasciatus (Dallas). Fungal spores applied with a spray tower produced significant mortality in H. convergens and A. domesticus, but effects on O. fasciatus were marginal. Placing treated insects with untreated individuals resulted in mortality from horizontal transmission to untreated beetles and crickets, but not milkweed bugs. Spread of fungal infection in the beetles …

The Trials Of Life: Natural Selection And Random Drift, Denis M. Walsh, Tim Lewens, André Ariew Jan 2002

The Trials Of Life: Natural Selection And Random Drift, Denis M. Walsh, Tim Lewens, André Ariew

Philosophy Faculty Publications

We distinguish dynamical and statistical interpretations of evolutionary theory. We argue that only the statistical interpretation preserves the presumed relation between natural selection and drift. On these grounds we claim that the dynamical conception of evolutionary theory as a theory of forces is mistaken. Selection and drift are not forces. Nor do selection and drift explanations appeal to the (sub‐population‐level) causes of population level change. Instead they explain by appeal to the statistical structure of populations. We briefly discuss the implications of the statistical interpretation of selection for various debates within the philosophy of biology—the ‘explananda of selection’ debate and …

Mather, Tsutomu Takeda, Chris A. Whitehouse, Robert E. Shope, Vsevold L. Popov, Hilda Guzman, Lark Coffey, Tais P. Araujo, Robert B. Tesh

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Two novel rhabdoviruses were isolated from birds during surveillance for arboviral encephalitis in the northeastern United States. The first, designated Farmington virus, is a tentative new member of the Vesiculovirus genus. The second, designated Rhode Island virus, is unclassified antigenically, but its ultrastructure and size are more similar to those of some of the plant rhabdoviruses. Both viruses infect birds and mice, as well as monkey kidney cells in culture, but their importance for human health is unknown.
