Donald Sutherland: The Politics And Erotics Of Submission, Jean Walton Dec 2010

Donald Sutherland: The Politics And Erotics Of Submission, Jean Walton

English and Creative Writing Faculty Publications

When Donald Sutherland burst onto the American film scene with his portrayal of Hawkeye in the unexpected Robert Altman hit M*A* S*H (1970), the popular press couldn't seem to agree on how best to characterize this new "un-Hollywood" star, fixing by turns on his Canadian background, his political activism, or his "funny peculiar" sense of humor (Dorothy Manners, "Sutherland - 'Actors Should Be Involved in Pertinent Causes,'" L.A. Examiner Sunday, 12 July 1970, n.p.; Douglas Marshall, "The Funniest Film Actor Canada Has Ever Produced," Maclean's, 1 September 1970, 42). After the release a few months later of Kelly's Heroes (1970), …

Improvement Of Hydraulic And Water Quality Renovation Functions By Intermittent Aeration Of Soil Treatment Areas In Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems, José A. Amador, David A. Potts, George W. Loomis, David V. Kalen, Erika L. Patenaude, Josef H. Görres

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We tested intermittent aeration of the soil treatment area (STA) of onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) for its ability to restore and maintain STA hydraulic flow and improve the water quality functions of conventional OWTS. Evaluation was conducted on hydraulically-failed conventional OWTS at three state-owned medical group homes in Washington County, RI, USA. Testing was conducted in two phases, with Phase I (before intermittent soil aeration (ISA)) comprising the first 6 months of the study, and Phase II (during ISA) the remaining 7 months. Intermittent soil aeration restored STA hydraulic function in all three systems despite a marked reduction in …

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather Nov 2010

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Marine archaeology beyond the capabilities of scuba divers is a technologically enabled field. The tool suite includes ship-based systems such as towed side-scan sonars and remotely operated vehicles, and more recently free-swimming autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Each of these platforms has various imaging and mapping capabilities appropriate for specific scales and tasks. Broadly speaking, AUVs are becoming effective tools for locating, identifying, and surveying archaeological sites. This paper discusses the role of AUVs in this suite of tools, outlines some specific design criteria necessary to maximize their utility in the field, and presents directions for future developments. Results are presented …

Engines Of The Ocean: Diatoms And Their Genetic Readout Under Nutrient Limitation, Bethany Jenkins Oct 2010

Engines Of The Ocean: Diatoms And Their Genetic Readout Under Nutrient Limitation, Bethany Jenkins

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Diatoms are important photosynthetic organisms in lakes and oceans; they take up CO2 and fix it into carbon building blocks for the cell. Therefore, they help balance atmospheric inputs of CO2. Diatoms also bioprecipitate silica and form nano-patterned cell walls that are unique between species. Diatom genomes have been sequenced to gain a better understanding of the architectural underpinnings for these processes. Diatoms live in environments with fluctuating nutrients, which can constrain photosynthesis and growth. My laboratory is conducting experiments to understand how diatoms respond to nutrient limitation and we are using methods to profile and quantify the expression of …

Inherent High Correlation Of Individual Motility Enhances Population Dispersal In A Heterotrophic, Planktonic Protist, Susanne Menden-Deuer Oct 2010

Inherent High Correlation Of Individual Motility Enhances Population Dispersal In A Heterotrophic, Planktonic Protist, Susanne Menden-Deuer

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Quantitative linkages between individual organism movements and the resulting population distributions are fundamental to understanding a wide range of ecological processes, including rates of reproduction, consumption, and mortality, as well as the spread of diseases and invasions. Typically, quantitative data are collected on either movement behaviors or population distributions, rarely both. This study combines empirical observations and model simulations to gain a mechanistic understanding and predictive ability of the linkages between both individual movement behaviors and population distributions of a single-celled planktonic herbivore. In the laboratory, microscopic 3D movements and macroscopic population distributions were simultaneously quantified in a 1L tank, …

Optimal Methods And Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics For The Characterization Of Highly-Modified Protein Systems, Peter Dimaggio Jr. Oct 2010

Optimal Methods And Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics For The Characterization Of Highly-Modified Protein Systems, Peter Dimaggio Jr.

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

The grand problem in biology is to understand how complex and integrated molecular mechanisms govern overall organism function. It has become increasingly recognized that multi-site post-translational modifications (PTMs) of specific proteins modulate their activity, cellular location, and corresponding macromolecular interactions. Many studies support the hypothesis that specific combinations of PTMs on a single protein actually encode for distinct functional states. Examples of such protein systems which are believed to function on the basis of some sort of “PTM code” are histones, microtubules, and several transcription factors, including p53. However, the biological connotations of these combinatorial posttranslational modifications remain to be …

Origin Of The Genus Homo, Holly M. Dunsworth Aug 2010

Origin Of The Genus Homo, Holly M. Dunsworth

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The origin of the genus Homo in Africa signals the beginning of the shift from increasingly bipedal apes to primitive, large-brained, stone tool-making, meat-eaters that traveled far and wide. This early part of the human genus is represented by three species: Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis, and Homo erectus. H. habilis is known for retaining primitive features that link it to australopiths and for being the first stone tool makers. Little is known about H. rudolfensis except that it had a relatively large brain and large teeth compared to H. habilis and that it overlapped in time and space with other …

An extensive set of measurements was made in and around Mexico City as part of the MILAGRO (Megacity Initiative: Local and Global Research Observations) experiments in March 2006. Simulations with the Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers, version 4 (MOZART-4), a global chemical transport model, have been used to provide a regional context for these observations and assist in their interpretation. These MOZART-4 simulations reproduce the aircraft observations generally well, but some differences in the modeled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the observations result from incorrect VOC speciation assumed for the emission inventories. The different types of CO sources …

Population Genetic Diversity And Fitness In Multiple Environments, Jeffrey A. Markert, Denise M. Champlin, Ruth Gutjahr-Gobell, Jason S. Grear, Anne Kuhn, Thomas J. Mcgreevy Jr., Annette Roth, Mark J. Bagley, Diane E. Nacci Jul 2010

Population Genetic Diversity And Fitness In Multiple Environments, Jeffrey A. Markert, Denise M. Champlin, Ruth Gutjahr-Gobell, Jason S. Grear, Anne Kuhn, Thomas J. Mcgreevy Jr., Annette Roth, Mark J. Bagley, Diane E. Nacci

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Background: When a large number of alleles are lost from a population, increases in individual homozygosity may reduce individual fitness through inbreeding depression. Modest losses of allelic diversity may also negatively impact long-term population viability by reducing the capacity of populations to adapt to altered environments. However, it is not clear how much genetic diversity within populations may be lost before populations are put at significant risk. Development of tools to evaluate this relationship would be a valuable contribution to conservation biology. To address these issues, we have created an experimental system that uses laboratory populations of an estuarine …

Application Of Structured Light Imaging For High Resolution Mapping Of Underwater Archaeological Sites, Chris Roman, Gabrielle Inglis, James Rutter May 2010

Application Of Structured Light Imaging For High Resolution Mapping Of Underwater Archaeological Sites, Chris Roman, Gabrielle Inglis, James Rutter

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

This paper presents results from recent work using structured light laser profile imaging to create high resolution bathymetric maps of underwater archaeological sites. Documenting the texture and structure of submerged sites is a difficult task and many applicable acoustic and photographic mapping techniques have recently emerged. This effort was completed to evaluate laser profile imaging in comparison to stereo imaging and high frequency multibeam mapping. A ROV mounted camera and inclined 532 nm sheet laser were used to create profiles of the bottom that were then merged into maps using platform navigation data. These initial results show very promising resolution …

A Turbulent Debate In The Ocean State, Dylan D. Lynch May 2010

A Turbulent Debate In The Ocean State, Dylan D. Lynch

Senior Honors Projects

Rhode Island has in many ways become the last battleground in a national state-by-state battle over the legalization of gay marriage. It is the last state in the country to not have a definitive stance on whether or not same-sex marriages should be legal and can be performed within the state’s borders, or should be banned and marriage defined solely as the union of a man and a woman. The state is currently undergoing a substantial swing in public support on gay marriage, moving from just 34% in 2004, to 60% in 2009. This rise in support for legalizing gay …

Scientific Restraint: The Balance Between Progress And Safety, Richard Bell

Senior Honors Projects

Mankind’s collective scientific and technological knowledge has progressed, and is progressing, at such a rate that humanity is now well within its means to bring about widespread devastation by its own devices. The high stakes of many projects in diverse fields of study, including those in nuclear, genetic, and biotechnical sciences, necessitates an analysis of how to decide if risky experiments are worth pursuing. This is not a matter, so much, of what safeguards we put into place in dangerous experimental environments, but rather how to weigh potential loss versus potential gain. Even in the best laboratories, disaster can strike, …

Hematological Neoplasms: Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, Andrea Bakalakis May 2010

Hematological Neoplasms: Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, Andrea Bakalakis

Senior Honors Projects

Hematological neoplasms, more commonly known as blood cancers, pose great concern within the United States healthcare system. These cancers originate within the bone marrow or lymphatic tissue and progress into the circulatory system. Hematological neoplasms are a result of genetic mutations in which the normal cell growth cycle is ex-changed for the uncontrollable growth of malignant cells. According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, blood cancers accounted for 9.5 percent of all cancer related deaths in 2009. Every four minutes, a new patient is diagnosed with blood cancer and every ten minutes, someone dies from this malignancy. Research and development …

A Guide To The Continuing Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Cytoskeleton And Cell Wall In Developing Buds Of Physcomitrella Patens, Derek Brockman

Senior Honors Projects

Persistent questions in biology address the nature of tissue organization and how information encoded in the genome can be manifested as a physical form. While the ‘final’ product of gene expression is a protein, science has yet to elucidate how those proteins are able to interact with other cellular components and external forces to generate a specific cell shape. This complex process is critical in determining not only the shape of an individual cell but also that of an entire organ. In plants, cell shape is controlled by cellulose microfibrils of the cell wall, which are typically oriented perpendicular to …

Citrate Synthase And The Visual Interactions Hypothesis, Kristina Camarena May 2010

Citrate Synthase And The Visual Interactions Hypothesis, Kristina Camarena

Senior Honors Projects

It has been shown that the metabolic rates of deep-living species of particular pelagic groups are significantly lower than those that live closer to the surface in the water column. Various theories as to why have been presented, including the visual interactions hypothesis, which states that because there is a greatly minimized ability to visually interact in the light-limited deep, predators have a reduced need for high metabolic rates because they do not actively go after their prey. Citrate synthase is a mitochondrial enzyme found at the beginning of the citric acid cycle, which plays an integral role in cellular …
