Media Narratives And Possibilities For Teachers’ Embodied Concepts Of Self, Jane S. Townsend, Patrick A. Ryan Sep 2013

Media Narratives And Possibilities For Teachers’ Embodied Concepts Of Self, Jane S. Townsend, Patrick A. Ryan

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Non-print media of radio, television, and film tell narratives about the image and practice of teachers, but how might these media narratives shape conceptions of teachers as well as teachers’ conceptions of themselves? What elements of the media narratives do we incorporate and reject in the narratives that we construct about their professional identities? How do these media and personal narratives interact with larger social narratives, such as the purposes for schools and gender role expectations? We take a historical view of the shaping power of media narratives and the contexts in which they flourished by looking to past depictions …

Background/Aims: The small molecule, Tolfenamic acid (TA) has shown anti-cancer activity in pre-clinical models and is currently in Phase I clinical trials at MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando. Since specificity and toxicity are major concerns for investigational agents, we tested the effect of TA on specific targets, and assessed the cellular and organismal toxicity representing pre-clinical studies in cancer. Methods: Panc1, L3.6pl, and MiaPaCa-2 (pancreatic cancer), hTERT-HPNE(normal), and differentiated/un-differentiated SH-SY5Y (neuroblastoma) cells were treated with increasing concentrations of TA. Cell viability and effect on specific molecular targets, Sp1 and survivin were determined. Athymic nude mice were treated with vehicle or …

Structuring Targeted Surveillance For Monitoring Disease Emergence By Mapping Observational Data Onto Ecological Process, Luca Gerardo-Giorda, Gavino Puggioni, Robert J. Rudd, Lance A. Waller, Leslie A. Real

Computer Science and Statistics Faculty Publications

An efficient surveillance system is a crucial factor in identifying, monitoring and tackling outbreaks of infectious diseases. Scarcity of data and limited amounts of economic resources require a targeted effort from public health authorities. In this paper, we propose a mathematical method to identify areas where surveillance is critical and low reporting rates might leave epidemics undetected. Our approach combines the use of reference-based susceptible-exposed-infectious models and observed reporting data;We propose two different specifications, for constant and time-varying surveillance, respectively. Our case study is centred around the spread of the raccoon rabies epidemic in the state of New York, using …

The Role Of Flow Sensing By The Lateral Line System In Prey Detection In Two African Cichlid Fishes, Margot Anita Bergstrom Schwalbe Sep 2013

The Role Of Flow Sensing By The Lateral Line System In Prey Detection In Two African Cichlid Fishes, Margot Anita Bergstrom Schwalbe

Open Access Dissertations

The mechanosensory lateral line system is found in all fishes and mediates critical behaviors, including prey detection. Widened canals, one of the four patterns of cranial lateral line canals found among teleosts, tend to be found in benthic fishes and/or fishes that live in hydrodynamically quiet or light-limited environments, such as the deep sea. Little is known about the functional significance of widened canals because most fishes with this morphology are inaccessible for laboratory study. A representative of one genus of Lake Malawi cichlid fishes, Aulonocara, has widened canals and provides an opportunity to investigate the role of widened …

The establishment of a complete genomic sequence of silkworm, the model species of Lepidoptera, laid a foundation for its functional genomics. A more complete annotation of the genome will benefit functional and comparative studies and accelerate extensive industrial applications for this insect. To realize these goals, we embarked upon a large-scale full-length cDNA collection from 21 full-length cDNA libraries derived from 14 tissues of the domesticated silkworm and performed full sequencing by primer walking for 11,104 full-length cDNAs. The large average intron size was 1904 bp, resulting from a high accumulation of transposons. Using gene models predicted by GLEAN and …

The Challenges Of Using Polyethylene Passive Samplers To Determine Dissolved Concentrations Of Parent And Alkylated Pahs Under Cold And Saline Conditions, Pamela J. Reitsma, Dave Adelman, Rainer Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Passive samplers can be useful tools to determine truly dissolved concentrations of organic contaminants in the water. Polyethylene (PE) samplers were validated for measuring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), with a focus on alkylated PAHs that can dominate in an oil spill. Equilibrium partition coefficients (KPEw) between water and PE passive samplers were measured for 41 PAHs both at ambient conditions (20 °C, no salt), down to -15 °C and 245 psu present in ice brine. For each additional alkylated carbon, log KPEw increased by an average of 0.40 (± 0.20) log units, close to predictions. The …

Food Parenting Measurement Issues: Working Group Consensus Report, Sheryl O. Hughes, Leslie A. Frankel, Alicia Beltran, Eric Hodges, Sharon Hoerr, Julie Lumeng, Alison Tovar, Stef Kremers

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Childhood obesity is a growing problem. As more researchers become involved in the study of parenting influences on childhood obesity, there appears to be a lack of agreement regarding the most important parenting constructs of interest, definitions of those constructs, and measurement of those constructs in a consistent manner across studies. This article aims to summarize findings from a working group that convened specifically to discuss measurement issues related to parental influences on childhood obesity. Six subgroups were formed to address key measurement issues. The conceptualization subgroup proposed to define and distinguish constructs of general parenting styles, feeding styles, and …

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid And Elongate Hemlock Scale Induce Changes In Foliar And Twig Volatiles Of Eastern Hemlock, Joshua Pezet, Joseph Elkinton, Sara Gomez, E. Alexa Mckenzie, Michael Lavine, Evan Preisser Aug 2013

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid And Elongate Hemlock Scale Induce Changes In Foliar And Twig Volatiles Of Eastern Hemlock, Joshua Pezet, Joseph Elkinton, Sara Gomez, E. Alexa Mckenzie, Michael Lavine, Evan Preisser

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is in rapid decline because of infestation by the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae; 'HWA') and, to a lesser extent, the invasive elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa; 'EHS'). For many conifers, induced oleoresin-based defenses play a central role in their response to herbivorous insects; however, it is unknown whether eastern hemlock mobilizes these inducible defenses. We conducted a study to determine if feeding by HWA or EHS induced changes in the volatile resin compounds of eastern hemlock. Young trees were experimentally infested for 3 years with HWA, EHS, or neither insect. Twig and needle resin …

The Importance Of Epigenetic Phenomena In Regulating Activity Of The Genetic Material, Sin Chan Aug 2013

The Importance Of Epigenetic Phenomena In Regulating Activity Of The Genetic Material, Sin Chan

Senior Honors Projects

Genetics has taught us that genes are represented as discrete sequences within a larger DNA molecule found embedded within the chromosomes of a living cell. Collectively these chromosomes and their associated genes carry all of the instructions for life. Until recently, the prevailing thought has been that genes are destiny in the life of an individual since the genes carry the information that determines the general traits and characteristics associated with that individual. The relatively recent understanding of mechanisms that underlie epigenetic phenomena has led to a rethinking of this concept. Epigenetics describes cellular mechanisms that explain how two individuals …

Hearing Loss In Perinatally Hiv-Infected And Hiv-Exposed But Uninfected Children And Adolescents, Peter Torre Iii, J. Hoffman, Ashley L. Buchanan, George K. Silberry, Mabel Rice, Patricia A. Sirois, Paige L. Williams Aug 2013

Hearing Loss In Perinatally Hiv-Infected And Hiv-Exposed But Uninfected Children And Adolescents, Peter Torre Iii, J. Hoffman, Ashley L. Buchanan, George K. Silberry, Mabel Rice, Patricia A. Sirois, Paige L. Williams

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Background - Little is known about hearing loss in children with HIV infection (HIV+). We examined the prevalence of hearing loss in perinatally HIV+ and HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) children, compared these to the percentage with hearing loss in the general population, and evaluated possible risk factors for hearing loss in HIV+ and HEU children.

Methods - Audiometric examinations were completed in children who met any pre-specified criteria for possible hearing loss. The hearing examination consisted of a tympanogram in each ear and pure-tone air-conduction threshold testing from 500 through 4000 Hz. Hearing loss was defined as the pure-tone average …

Isolation And Structural Elucidation Of Phytochemicals Present In Red Maple Flowers, Holly Tran

Senior Honors Projects

Natural medicines and the use of botanical extracts in the prevention and treatment of ailments is globally gaining interest (Mazzio and Soliman, 2009). Detrimental side effects may be reduced using natural therapies (Desai et al., 2008). Worldwide, there are about 120 different maple species. Of those, thirteen are native to eastern North America (Maple Field Guide, 2002). Maple syrup is a natural sweetener derived from collected and concentrated maple tree sap. It takes about 40 liters of sap to make one liter of syrup. Maple plant parts have been used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes. The University of Rhode …

Vertical Eddy Diffusion As A Key Mechanism For Removing Perfluorooctanic Acid (Pfoa) From The Global Surface Oceans, Rainer Lohmann, Elena Jurado, Henk A. Dijkstra, Jordi Dachs Aug 2013

Vertical Eddy Diffusion As A Key Mechanism For Removing Perfluorooctanic Acid (Pfoa) From The Global Surface Oceans, Rainer Lohmann, Elena Jurado, Henk A. Dijkstra, Jordi Dachs

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Here we estimate the importance of vertical eddy diffusion in removing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from the surface Ocean and assess its importance as a global sink. Measured water column profiles of PFOA were reproduced by assuming that vertical eddy diffusion in a 3-layer ocean model is the sole cause for the transport of PFOA to depth waters. The global oceanic sink due to eddy diffusion for PFOA is high, with accumulated removal fluxes over the last 40 years of 664 t, with the Atlantic Ocean accounting for 70% of the global oceanic sink. The global oceans have removed 13% of …
