Coarse-Grained Models For Microbial Metabolisms And Biological Interactions, Meng Gao Jan 2026

Coarse-Grained Models For Microbial Metabolisms And Biological Interactions, Meng Gao

Open Access Dissertations

Microorganisms are microscopic, typically unicellular organisms widely distributed across the world’s environments.  In the global ocean, they account for the majority of primary production and decompose organic matter to drive nutrient cycles. Through their metabolic processes, including photosynthesis, dinitrogen (N2) fixation, sulfur oxidation, and methanogenesis, microbes contribute to global biogeochemical processes, and establish their ecological niches in suitable habitats. Their biological interactions, including competition, symbiosis, and grazing, are important links among different functional groups in marine communities. Consequently, quantifying microbial metabolisms and their biological interactions is important to investigate their ecological functions in marine ecosystems and the global …

Ecce Leadership Development: Supports, Barriers, And Identity Formation, Andrea Weidele Jan 2026

Ecce Leadership Development: Supports, Barriers, And Identity Formation, Andrea Weidele

Open Access Dissertations

Early childhood care and education (ECCE) leadership development is not given the attention it deserves. Despite the proven link between high-quality ECCE programs and positive societal outcomes, leadership development within the sector is significantly under-resourced. Because program quality is inherently tied to leadership efficacy, there is an urgent need to investigate the supports and structures that foster effective ECCE leadership. This study addressed that gap by using a qualitative multiple case study to explore how six ECCE program leaders of licensed ECCE programs from a New England state describe their leadership development, including supports and barriers they encountered and how …

Linking Phytoplankton Physiology And Ecology To Global Biogeochemical Cycles: A Modeling Approach, Margaret Bernish Jan 2026

Linking Phytoplankton Physiology And Ecology To Global Biogeochemical Cycles: A Modeling Approach, Margaret Bernish

Open Access Dissertations

Phytoplankton, or microscopic primary producers, contribute to carbon export through the biological transformation of carbon dioxide into organic molecules. Phytoplankton are responsible for approximately half of global net primary production, while only contributing minimally to total photosynthetic biomass. Despite their important role in the global cycling of nutrients, phytoplankton physiology and ecology are often highly simplified in global biogeochemical models. This dissertation elucidates the role of phytoplankton physiology and ecology within biogeochemical cycles, allowing for better characterization of marine microbial distribution and better representation of nutrient cycling for interpretive and predictive models. The development of formulations that link physiological responses …

Investigating The Effects Of Nucleopore Defects On The Cellular Response To Stress In Als/Ftd Ipsc-Derived Neurons, Alicia Christine Collins Jan 2026

Investigating The Effects Of Nucleopore Defects On The Cellular Response To Stress In Als/Ftd Ipsc-Derived Neurons, Alicia Christine Collins

Open Access Dissertations

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/frontotemporal dementia (ALS/FTD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease spectrum characterized by motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and death within a few years of clinical onset. Hallmark features of ALS/FTD include defects in nucleocytoplasmic transport (NCT) and abnormal cytoplasmic mislocalization and aggregation of the RNA-binding protein TDP-43, both of which have been shown to be exasperated by oxidative stress (OS). It remains unclear how these processes are connected and how they collectively contribute to neurodegeneration. To fill this gap of knowledge, we used human embryonic kidney cells, neuroblastoma cells, and induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cortical neurons harboring the ALS/FTD C9ORF72 …

Submesoscale Dynamics Of Phytoplankton And Carbon Export Revealed By High-Resolution Airborne And Satellite Remote Sensing Of Currents And Ocean Color, Sarah E. Lang Jan 2026

Submesoscale Dynamics Of Phytoplankton And Carbon Export Revealed By High-Resolution Airborne And Satellite Remote Sensing Of Currents And Ocean Color, Sarah E. Lang

Open Access Dissertations

Satellites and airborne sensors reveal submesoscale (1 - 10 km) variability in ocean color in the form of filaments, eddies, and patches. The variability in ocean color is closely tied to the physical dynamics that restructure phytoplankton distributions and drive active biological responses like changes in primary productivity and community structure. As the base of the marine food web and a key component of the biological carbon pump, phytoplankton are crucial to the overall health of marine ecosystems and to the ocean's role in climate. This dissertation focuses on the use of airborne and satellite remote sensing to study the …

Impact Of Water Quality And Gear Type On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Growth In Narragansett Bay, Ri, Jacqueline Rosa Jan 2026

Impact Of Water Quality And Gear Type On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Growth In Narragansett Bay, Ri, Jacqueline Rosa

Open Access Master's Theses

Oyster aquaculture is expanding in Rhode Island, yet key farming regions in the lower West Passage of Narragansett Bay (WPNB) lack the in-situ, high-temporal resolution monitoring needed to evaluate emerging stressors and support production. At the same time, the industry is undergoing rapid technological development aimed at improving production while reducing labor and overall costs. In recent years, a low-maintenance, alternative surface gear was introduced in WPNB; however, its impact on oyster performance relative to traditional cultivation methods has not been quantified. This study established a 1.5-year continuous water quality time series in WPNB and paired these observations with …

Enhancing Bay Scallop Monitoring Using Machine Learning And Semantic Segmentation With Benthic Visual Imagery, Waheed Odubayo Jan 2026

Enhancing Bay Scallop Monitoring Using Machine Learning And Semantic Segmentation With Benthic Visual Imagery, Waheed Odubayo

Open Access Master's Theses

Effective monitoring of benthic ecosystems requires scalable approaches capable of simultaneously identifying key species and quantifying habitat composition. In Narragansett Bay Rhode Island, bay scallops, Argopecten irradians, serve as important ecological indicators, yet traditional survey methods remain labor-intensive and spatially limited. This study presents an automated deep learning framework for scallop detection and habitat segmentation using underwater benthic imagery.

The proposed system combines three components: (1) YOLO based object detection for identifying live scallops, (2) U-Net semantic segmentation for quantifying benthic habitat classes (eelgrass and sand/silt), and (3) a geospatial contrastive learning framework (GeoCLR) to leverage spatial continuity in …

Investigating Netarts Bay, Oregon Coastal Landscape Change From Tectonic Subsidence Through Isotopic, Stratigraphic Records And Quantifying Dune Influence On Salt Marsh Morphodynamics, Emily Hall Jan 2026

Investigating Netarts Bay, Oregon Coastal Landscape Change From Tectonic Subsidence Through Isotopic, Stratigraphic Records And Quantifying Dune Influence On Salt Marsh Morphodynamics, Emily Hall

Open Access Master's Theses

Coastal salt marshes on tectonically active margins face dual pressures from episodic seismic events and anthropogenic modifications. This study investigated how the 1700 CE Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and the 1900 CE introduction of invasive dune grass influenced back-barrier salt marsh morphodynamics at Netarts Bay, Oregon. It was hypothesized that (1) salt marsh habitats and elevation transitions would be detectable in geochemical proxies preserved in stratigraphy, (2) modern dune stabilization significantly limits mineral sediment delivery to the salt marsh, and (3) this reduction would be preserved in the stratigraphic record. Stratigraphic and isotopic analyses of sediment cores incorporating CT scans, …

Between A Rockpile And A Hard Place: Mapping The Folk-Hydronymy Of Southern New England, Amanda Gilmore Jan 2026

Between A Rockpile And A Hard Place: Mapping The Folk-Hydronymy Of Southern New England, Amanda Gilmore

Open Access Master's Theses

Fishermen in Southern New England (SNE) utilize a wide variety of placenames to delineate areas of significance on the open ocean. This information provides new revelations not just about the way fishermen navigate the ocean, but also insight about overlaps between Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) and Fishermen’s Ecological Knowledge in the historically prolific fishing sector of Southern New England. Prior to this study, this collection of vernacular place names on the water, or folk-hydronymy, had never been documented or analyzed, as it was held almost entirely in cognitive maps and proliferated through communication with other fishermen. This project’s goal was …

Using A Novel Approach To Measure Phonological Working Memory In Parents Of Children With Autism: A Nonword Repetition Study, Giavanna Galati Jan 2026

Using A Novel Approach To Measure Phonological Working Memory In Parents Of Children With Autism: A Nonword Repetition Study, Giavanna Galati

Open Access Master's Theses

Background: The etiology of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been a topic of debate among researchers for many years. Fundamental evidence, especially from twin studies, supports a strong genetic component. This evidence now prompts us to examine first-degree relatives of individuals with ASD. Many first-degree relatives, especially siblings and parents, often exhibit subclinical traits of autism, referred to as the Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP). Several researchers have investigated personality traits and pragmatic language skills; however, few researchers have investigated core language skills, particularly phonological working memory (PWM), in parents of children with ASD (pASD). Purpose: Past research has …

This model is used …

Dynamics Of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Structured Complex Fluids, Sepehr Yari Jan 2026

Dynamics Of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Structured Complex Fluids, Sepehr Yari

Open Access Master's Theses

Cancer survival depends strongly on the stage at which the disease is detected, motivating the development of biosensors capable of identifying early changes in cellular state. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are promising intracellular biosensors because their intrinsic near-infrared fluorescence, photostability, and tunable surface chemistry and lenght enable prolonged measurements in living cells. Disease such as cancer can progress and alter intracellular physical properties, suggesting that SWCNT motion may provide a physical readout of changes in cellular state. Interpreting this motion is challenging, however, because the cytoplasm is structurally heterogeneous and contains both passive fluctuations and active transport processes. As a …

Coral Holobiont Lipidome Response To Global Change, Lauren Zane Jan 2026

Coral Holobiont Lipidome Response To Global Change, Lauren Zane

Open Access Dissertations

Climate change is fundamentally restructuring macro-scale marine ecosystem structure and function by altering microscale metabolic processes and patterns of energy allocation. Scleractinian corals, as major ecosystem engineers, play outsized roles in ecosystem structure and function. They also occupy diverse habitats that differ in temperature regimes, light environments, hydrodynamics, and other environmental conditions, exposing corals to substantial spatial variation in stress and resource availability. Their fragile nutritional symbiosis with algal endosymbionts helps them navigate these environmental variations, but are also highly sensitive to environmental stress, particularly the timing and magnitude of water temperature changes. As pressure from environmental changes increases, the …

Fluoropolymers are widely used across sectors, but their production is associated with emissions of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which are mobile, persistent, and toxic. In this work, we compiled a global inventory of fluoropolymer production plants (FPPs) and assembled PFAS concentration measurements for various media in their vicinity. We identified 52 currently operating FPPs across 11 countries and 41 cities. For 12 FPPs, in 12 different cities, there are peer-reviewed site-specific PFAS measurements specifically attributed to the FPP. At these 12 sites, at least 236 individual PFASs have been detected across multiple environmental media, including surface water, groundwater, air, …

The Gendered Path Of Least Resistance: First Entry And Exit Behaviors Of Public And Nonprofit Employees, Tiana Marrese, Ying Liu, Femida Handy Jan 2026

The Gendered Path Of Least Resistance: First Entry And Exit Behaviors Of Public And Nonprofit Employees, Tiana Marrese, Ying Liu, Femida Handy

Political Science Faculty Publications

Public and nonprofit organizations exhibit high rates of female employment often attributed to sector structures and social roles. To better understand how individual behaviors dynamically contribute to these distinctive ratios, we deconstruct public and nonprofit employment into gendered patterns of attraction and attachment. Using duration analysis and following a cohort from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, this research finds that women demonstrate a higher attraction to their first public and nonprofit job compared to men, evidenced through a faster rate of entry into this employment. There are no significant gender differences when considering the duration of an individual's …

Comparative Assessments Of Methane Flux Measurement Techniques In Serpentinite-Influenced Groundwater Wells, Madison J. Stetson Jan 2026

Comparative Assessments Of Methane Flux Measurement Techniques In Serpentinite-Influenced Groundwater Wells, Madison J. Stetson

Open Access Master's Theses

Methane (CH4) emissions from continental serpentinizing systems represent a significant component of Earth’s carbon cycling. Despite increasing recognition of serpentinite-hosted water-rock interactions as a source of trace gases, standardized field methodologies for quantifying trace gas flux from groundwater wells and similar subsurface conduits remain limited. This study addresses that gap by evaluating the reliability and replicability of three chamber-based sampling methods for measuring gas flux in serpentinite-hosted groundwater systems accessed by groundwater monitoring wells. Field measurements were conducted at the Coast Range Ophiolite Microbial Observatory (CROMO) within the McLaughlin Natural Reserve in Lower Lake, California, a site …

Amino Acid Isotope Dynamics And Associated Ecological Metrics Across Accretionary Tissues Of Marine Fishes, Sofia Piccone Jan 2026

Amino Acid Isotope Dynamics And Associated Ecological Metrics Across Accretionary Tissues Of Marine Fishes, Sofia Piccone

Open Access Master's Theses

Compound-specific isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA) applied to the organic growth layers of accretionary fish tissues, including eye lenses, otoliths, and scales, has made it possible to reconstruct histories of fish physiology, ecology, and environmental conditions. Yet it remains uncertain whether amino acid isotope values, and the ecological information they contain, are conserved across these archival tissues or if differences in tissue composition, growth, protein structure, and metabolic routing produce tissue-specific offsets that alter inferred carbon sources, d15NBaseline, and trophic position. We tested this question with individually paired CSIA-AA of eye lenses, otoliths, and scales …

Aging And The Screen: Toxic Commodification Of The Female Body In The Substance (2024), Damlasu Uyug Sengun, Tuncer Mert Aydın, Zeynep Ozdamar Ertekin

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Representations of the aging female body have increased in media, but their presence is still shaped by social norms and market-driven ideals. On the contrary, The Substance (2024), an absurd, postmodern body horror, provides us a provocative critique of contemporary society’s obsession with youth and beauty and the way our culture defines and commodifies aging, especially in relation to women’s bodies and identities. Our review of The Substance incorporates consumer culture theory with Julia Kristeva’s concept of the abject (1982), Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze (1975), and Barbara Creed’s notion of the monstrous-feminine, (1993) to explore the toxic …

Navigating The Open-Loops: Actor Dynamics And Bottlenecks In The Transition Towards Circular Household Waste Supply Chains, Burcin Ozdamar, Aysu Göçer

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Household waste supply chains (HWSCs) in developing countries often suffer from fragmented actor structures, weak coordination, and informal practices that limit their overall performance and circularity potential. Existing studies tend to focus on isolated aspects such as waste types, technologies, or individual actors, without systematically examining the broader network and interdependencies shaping HWSC outcomes. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the key components (e.g. actors and waste processes) and bottleneck points that hinder the structure and functioning of current HWSCs to transform into circular systems. Drawing on industrial network theory, the research analyzes how actor relationships and system configurations influence …

Venezuelan Migrants In Prostitution: A Personal Decision?, Yazmin Maria Lucila Cadena Camargo, Izara Maite Mondragon Moreno, Isabela Osorio Jaramillo, Paula Angélica Suárez Álvarez, Andrés Duarte Osorio, Carlos Gómez-Restrepo

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

This paper explores the multifaceted experiences of Venezuelan migrant women engaged in prostitution, framed through three critical moments: the “decision to enter in prostitution,” the unique abuses faced, and the resultant consequences on mental, physical, and social health. The study highlights how socioeconomic vulnerabilities—exacerbated by migration and poverty—significantly influence the likelihood of entering prostitution. It also shows how traumatic experiences, particularly in childhood and adolescence, coupled with a lack of support networks, contribute to a heightened risk of exploitation. Eleven life stories were collected through a phenomenological approach, revealing a common narrative of abuse, poverty, and the search for survival …
