Quantitative Determination Of Sugars In Gums, Mohammed Al-Hazmi Jan 1984

Quantitative Determination Of Sugars In Gums, Mohammed Al-Hazmi

Open Access Master's Theses

Quantitative determination of sugars in gums by a modified GLC method, has generated two manuscripts with the following abstracts:

Abstract I:

A modified GLC method for hexose derivatives.

The procedure involving oxi~e formation followed by silylation for the analysis of standard hexoses resulted in the formation of unseparated peaks for D-glucose, D-mannose and D-galactose. Therefore, this procedure was modified to obtain clear separation of hexoses. "STOX" was mixed with TMSI or HMDS, and then added to a standard sugar .mixture containing D-glucose, D-galactose and D-mannose. The mixture was analyzed by gas chromatography with OV-17/0V-22 as the stationary phase, resulting in …

15N Tracer Study Of The Short-Term Fate Of Particulate Organic Nitrogen At The Surface Of Coastal Marine Sediments, Jonathan H. Garber Jan 1984

15N Tracer Study Of The Short-Term Fate Of Particulate Organic Nitrogen At The Surface Of Coastal Marine Sediments, Jonathan H. Garber

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

I5N tracer experiments were conducted to examine the fate of particulate organic nitrogen at the surface of an intact silty sediment community from Narragansett Bay, R.I. (USA). I5N-labelled particulate organic matter (POM, 82.5 atom % I5N excess), obtained from cultured marine diatoms (Skeletonema costaturn), was applied to the surface of 10 to 12 cm deep sediment cores and the time course distribution of the tracer was determined in inorganic-N and organic-N compartments in sediment and free water. Tracer experiments were conducted in spring (8°C) and fall (16°C). Small amounts of tracer-N were recovered in all …

Relative Value Of Carotenoids As Precursors Of Vitamin A, Kenneth L. Simpson Jan 1983

Relative Value Of Carotenoids As Precursors Of Vitamin A, Kenneth L. Simpson

Past Departments Faculty Publications (College of Health Sciences)

The carotenoid pigments are very conspicuous in nature, owing to their yellow to red hues, and occur without exception in photosynthetic tissue. They are responsible for the colour in some species of yeast, bacteria and fungi as well as many vegetables and fruits. Although animals are incapable of de novo synthesis, they are able to deposit the carotenoid pigment as absorbed or with some alteration of the basic structure. Thus, the red to yellow colour in the flesh, skin, shell or exoskeleton of salmon, lobster, crab, prawn, carp, flamingo, etc. is directly or indirectly diet-related. The intestinal cleavage of carotenoids …

Boron In The Marine Atmosphere, Thomas R. Fogg Jan 1983

Boron In The Marine Atmosphere, Thomas R. Fogg

Open Access Dissertations

Atmospheric boron has been separated into gaseous and particulate components for the first time by passing air through a simple impregnated filter sampling system. A Nuclepore filter for particulate boron collection preceded KOH impregnated Whatman 41 filters for gaseous boron collection. The filters were contained in a single 47 mm filter holder. Boron was determined by visible spectrophotometry with 2,4-dinitro-1,8-naphthalene dial (DNNDO) and brilliant green. This method was employed to allow short time scale variations of atmospheric boron to be measured. The goal of this work was to investigate the role of the oceans on atmospheric boron. Gaseous and particulate …

The Effect Of A Hypocaloric Diet On The Body Weight, Body Composition And Serum Hdl Levels Of Male Endurance Athletes, Ellen Carol Alina Jan 1983

The Effect Of A Hypocaloric Diet On The Body Weight, Body Composition And Serum Hdl Levels Of Male Endurance Athletes, Ellen Carol Alina

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a hypocaloric diet on the serum HDL levels and body composition of endurance athletes. Sixteen male athletes, 20 - 45 years of age, volunteered to run 10 miles daily during this 18 day study. For the first 7 days of the study, the subjects consumed a baseline diet and a supplement (muffin) to maintain body weight. The experimental period included a hypocaloric diet which the runner consumed from days 8 - 18. Phlebotomy occurred on days 1, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 18. The blood samples were analyzed for …
