Keys To Person-Centred Care To Persons Living With Dementia – Experiences From An Educational Program In Sweden, Mia Berglund, Catharina Gillsjö, Rune Svanström
College of Nursing Faculty Publications
Growing old entails an increased risk of disabilities and illnesses such as dementia. The orientation in Sweden on national level is that individuals remain in their own homes if desired and receive person-centred home care. The aim of this study was to describe the experience of an educational program and its influence on daily provision of care to persons with dementia. A life-world approach was used. Data were collected through group interviews with care providers in the context of home. The findings are presented in five themes: Increased knowledge about dementia and treatment, Relationship-building in order to provide good care, …

Evaluating The Social And Technological Benefits Of An Intergenerational Program For Older Adults, Itza Serrano
Open Access Master's Theses
Intergenerational programs are on the rise. While studies have shown benefits to participation in these programs, most of the research has been focused on students and less on older adult outcomes (see Andreoletti & Howard, 2016 for a review). Currently, the University of Rhode Island (URI) is host to the Engaging Generations: Cyber-Seniors Program, which connects older adults with undergraduate technology mentors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of intergenerational programming participation for older adults related to social isolation, loneliness, social engagement, and digital competency, as measured by the pre/post surveys given to participants. Background: Up to 70% of nursing home (NH) residents receive one or more courses of antibiotics (ATB) annually, of which over half may be inappropriate and risk harm. The current availability of in-house NH data is often insufficient to measure and track appropriateness, due to incomplete data or unusable formatting. Our 3-year project to improve antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Core Elements of AMS for NHs, with guided input from NH providers to develop and implement an electronic ATB de-escalation decision support tool that also captures otherwise inaccessible data.
Methods: Our baseline …

Sociodemographic Disparities In Adult Child Informal Caregiving Intensity In The United States: Results From The New National Study Of Caregiving, Sarah K. Cook, Steven A. Cohen
Kinesiology Faculty Publications
The objective of the current study was to assess socioeconomic and demographic disparities in caregiving intensity among informal caregivers. Using a randomized, nationally representative sample of 1,014 adult child informal caregivers from Medicare enrollment databases, the associations between informal caregiving intensity and age, race/ethnicity, and income were examined using binary and ordinal logistic regression. Caregiving intensity varied by demographics. Activities of daily living (ADL) caregiving was highest among Black, non-Hispanic caregivers. Instrumental ADL caregiving and number of hours spent caregiving was highest in female and non-White caregivers. Although the overall association between caregiving intensity and income was not significant, when …
Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviors To Dietary Management Of Parkinson’S Disease, Leah Marie Hurley
Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviors To Dietary Management Of Parkinson’S Disease, Leah Marie Hurley
Open Access Master's Theses
Background: Levodopa is the most commonly used medication to improve motor sequelae in persons with PD (PwPD). However, levodopa and dietary protein compete for absorption in the gut and blood brain barrier. Dietary proteins are essential for growth and physical functioning, which generally deteriorate with PD progression. Informal caregivers (ICG) often assist PwPD with meal and medication management, but have reported information deficits regarding dietary and medication management for PwPD.
Objective: To obtain qualitative information related to dietary knowledge and attitudes, and quantitative data on dietary behaviors from PwPD and their ICG.
Methods: Cross-sectional, mixed-methods study. A …

INTRODUCTION The popularity of academic social networks like ResearchGate and Academia.edu indicates that scholars want to share their work, yet for universities with open access (OA) policies, these sites may be competing with institutional repositories (IRs) for content. This article seeks to reveal researcher practices, attitudes, and motivations around uploading their work to ResearchGate and complying with an institutional OA Policy through a study of faculty at the University of Rhode Island (URI). METHODS We conducted a population study to examine the participation by 558 full-time URI faculty members in the OA Policy and ResearchGate followed by a survey of …
Factors Predicting Civic Engagement Among Older Adult Nursing Home Residents, Skye N. Leedahl, Alicia Sellon, Naomi Gallopyn
Factors Predicting Civic Engagement Among Older Adult Nursing Home Residents, Skye N. Leedahl, Alicia Sellon, Naomi Gallopyn
Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications
This study examined civic engagement participation among older adult nursing home residents and determined resident characteristics that predict group membership, resident council participation, informal volunteering, and voting. Residents (N = 139) answered questions from standardized surveys during in-person interviews. The most common civic engagement activity was membership in social/community groups. Logistic regression results showed that emotional well-being and social support predict group membership and resident council participation. Age and activities of daily living predict volunteering. Study findings suggest that community groups could utilize residents in their efforts, and that future research should determine supports and adaptations for increasing civic …
