An Active-Learning Course Model To Teach Pharmacotherapy In Geriatrics, Erica L. Estus, L. Hume, Norma J. Owens

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Objective. To describe the development, implementation, and assessment of a geriatric pharmacotherapy elective course emphasizing a patient-centered approach and active, self-directed learning strategies.

Design. The course content included fundamental concepts in aging, geriatric syndromes, activities involving assessment of medically complex older adults, presentation of controversies in clinical geriatrics, book and film clubs, an Adopt-a-Patient project, and scientific and reflective writing. Students participated in site visits to interview and interact with older adults.

Assessment. Student evaluation of the course was assessed with the teaching evaluation tool, an end-of-semester survey, a follow-up P4 survey, and reflective writings. Students strongly …

Background

Physical function is the ability to perform both basic and instrumental activities of daily living, and the ability of older adults to reside in the community depends to a large extent on their level of physical function. Multiple physical and health-related variables may differentially affect physical function, but they have not been well characterized. The purpose of this investigation was to identify and examine physical and mental health-related correlates of physical function in a sample of community-dwelling older adults.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare standard lipid profile, reported dietary intake, and physical activity in older adults who reported taking or not taking a lipid-lowering medication, namely statins.

Design: Cross-sectional study utilizing baseline data collected from a subsample of a larger randomized clinical trial, The Study of Exercise and Nutrition in Older Rhode Islanders (SENIOR) Project.

Participants and Setting: A total of 115 participants, 33 males and 82 females, over the age of 60, community-dwelling, primarily retired, and from East Providence, Rhode Island and surrounding communities in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Older Adult Alcohol Misuse: Attitudes, Knowledge, And Support For Prevention Policies And Practices Among Aging Services Practitioners, Crystelle A. Egan

Alcohol misuse is prevalent among older adults and is projected to increase. Alcohol misuse includes: 1) at risk consumption patterns and 2) problem use already resulting in negative consequences. An increase in alcohol misuse prevention efforts targeted to adults 65 and older is necessary to address this public health issue. Aging services practitioners are key gatekeepers to the older population, yet anecdotal discussion in the research literature suggests that negative attitudes about older adult alcohol misuse (denial, fatalism, and therapeutic nihilism) may decrease their likelihood of supporting prevention efforts. The purposes of this study were (a) to examine the relationship between character strengths and physical health and (b) to examine the moderating role of character strengths in the relationship between income and physical health. This study used nationally representative data from a sample of German adults (N > 1000) which included information about demographics, socioeconomic status, physical health, and character strengths. Physical health was assessed in two ways: doctor-diagnosed diseases and self-diagnosed chronic illnesses. Results showed that the character strengths of hope and zest were related to fewer doctor-diagnosed diseases and lower levels of self-diagnosed chronic illness. The character strengths …
