Reflective Strength-Giving Dialogue Developed To Support Older Adults In Learning To Live With Long-Term Pain: A Method And A Study Design, Catharina Gillsjö, M. Berglund

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background: Long-term musculoskeletal pain is a major health problem that significantly impacts quality of life among older adults. Many lack professional guidance and must learn on their own to live with pain. This calls for a holistic method that addresses older adults’ needs in their situations. The developed method has its foundation in the didactic model: “The challenge – to take control of one’s life with long-term illness.

Aim: The aim was to describe the method, Reflective STRENGTH-Giving Dialogue, and present a study design where the method is learned and used by health careprovidersto support older adults in learning to …

Social Class Myopia: The Case Of Psychology And Labor Unions, Bernice Lott Jan 2014

Social Class Myopia: The Case Of Psychology And Labor Unions, Bernice Lott

Psychology Faculty Publications

This article explores the potential for a research agenda that includes scholarship on working class issues and organized labor. Such an agenda is consistent with the official mission of American Psychological Association—to advance knowledge that benefits society and improves people's lives. I focus on our paucity of interest in the institution that gives the American working class a voice—the labor union. We know that work is one of the central focuses in the lives of most people and that the work experience is deeply implicated in satisfaction with life. The efforts of organized labor to achieve economic fairness and justice, …

Inner-Peace And Physical Health: Peace Of Mind And Physical Health Among Rhode Island Older Adults, Thupten Tendhar Jan 2014

Inner-Peace And Physical Health: Peace Of Mind And Physical Health Among Rhode Island Older Adults, Thupten Tendhar

Open Access Master's Theses

The number of older adults increases globally year after year at an unprecedented rate, and so does their healthcare expenditure. This trend is similar in Rhode Island. The proportion of older adults relative to the general population is rising sharply in this smallest state in the US. The quality of later life and well-being of the older adults remains questionable for many, due to the increasing chronic disease burden associated with advanced age.

The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between inner-peace and physical health, with the aim of developing a clearer picture to improve the health …

Effects Of Combined Tai Chi, Resistance Training And Diet On Percent Body Fat In Obese Older Women, Dinah Quintanilla Jan 2014

Effects Of Combined Tai Chi, Resistance Training And Diet On Percent Body Fat In Obese Older Women, Dinah Quintanilla

Open Access Master's Theses

Obesity is a public health problem affecting approximately 35.4% of Americans 60 years of age or older and African-American women are considered at high-risk for obesity. Exercise and diet are effective at reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Resistance training (RT) has been reported to preserve or increase skeletal muscle mass, functional status, well-being, and improve memory. Tai Chi (TC), a form of martial art, is an exercise composed of slow deliberate movements that can result in improvements in cardiovascular disease risk factors including body composition, but no studies have combined diet, RT and TC in a community-based study in …

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

Objectives. Testing a model based on past research and theory, this study assessed relationships between facility characteristics (i.e., culture change efforts, social workers) and residents’ social networks and social support across nursing homes and examined relationships between multiple aspects of social integration (i.e., social networks, social capital, social engagement, social support) and mental and functional health for older adults in nursing homes.

Methods. Data were collected at nursing homes using a planned missing data design with random sampling techniques. Data collection occurred at the individual-level through in-person structured interviews with older adult nursing home residents (N = 140) and …

Depression, Social Support, And Self-Rated Health In Older Adults, Kristen Frady Jan 2014

Depression, Social Support, And Self-Rated Health In Older Adults, Kristen Frady

Open Access Master's Theses

Little research has explored factors indirectly related to health that may influence self-rated health (SRH) in older adults. Even less research has explored the relationship between perceived social support and SRH. The purpose of this study was to explore a health-related factor, depression, and an indirectly related to health factor, social support, as predictors of self-rated health in older adults. It explored three primary research questions: 1) Are there significant differences in older adults’ SRH scores when examined by demographic factors such as age, education, and marital status? 2) Are depression and social support correlated with SRH and is one …

Learning To Endure Long-Term Musculoskeletal Pain In Daily Life At Home: A Qualitative Interview Study Of The Older Adult’S Experience, Catharina Gillsjö, Donna Schwartz-Barcott, Ingrid Bergh Oct 2013

Learning To Endure Long-Term Musculoskeletal Pain In Daily Life At Home: A Qualitative Interview Study Of The Older Adult’S Experience, Catharina Gillsjö, Donna Schwartz-Barcott, Ingrid Bergh

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background: Worldwide, there is an increasing number of older adults, the majority of whom remain living at home. Not infrequently they live with long-term pain, especially musculoskeletal pain, which is associated with increased disability (physical, psychological, social) and a negative impact on quality of life. A deeper understanding of how older adults experience living with this type of pain is needed in order to improve well-being and quality of life. The study focused on the actual experience by living with this global, prevailing and disabling type of pain. The aim was to describe commonalities in how older adults endure long-term …

The Combined Effect Of Tai Chi And Weight Loss On Physical Function In Community Dwelling Obese Older Wommen, Jonathan M. Letendre Jan 2013

The Combined Effect Of Tai Chi And Weight Loss On Physical Function In Community Dwelling Obese Older Wommen, Jonathan M. Letendre

Open Access Master's Theses

Introduction: Older obese women are at risk of obesity-related disability, but Tai Chi has not been explored as an exercise modality along with weight loss for their effects on physical function. Methods: A 16-week community-based intervention was conducted to assess the impact of Tai Chi plus behaviorally-based weight loss (TCWL, n=29) on obese (BMI=35.4 ±0.8 kg/m2) older (68.2±1.5 yr) women compared to a control group (CON, n=9, BMI=38.0±1.5kg/m2, 65.6±2.7 yr). The major outcome was the short physical performance battery (SPPB), consisting of 4-m gait speed (GS), standing balance, and chair stand (CS) tests. The TCWL group …

Positive Nurse-Resident Relationships A Focused Ethnography In A Nursing Home, Rosemary A. Costigan Jan 2013

Positive Nurse-Resident Relationships A Focused Ethnography In A Nursing Home, Rosemary A. Costigan

Open Access Dissertations

More than 1.4 million Americans reside in long term care facilities across the United States. Social and professional relationships are an integral component of everyday life within these environments. Few studies have systematically examined positive relationships that exist between residents and nursing assistants in long term care. A focused ethnography of a nursing home, one known for the quality of life experienced by its residents and located in the northeastern United States, was used to examine the nature of (1) interactions (2) positive relationships (their development and maintenance) between residents and nursing assistants, and (3) supportive environmental factors. Peace House …
