Application Of Filtration Rate Models To Field Populations Of Bivalves: An Assessment Using Experimental Mesocosms, Peter H. Doering, Candace A. Oviatt
Application Of Filtration Rate Models To Field Populations Of Bivalves: An Assessment Using Experimental Mesocosms, Peter H. Doering, Candace A. Oviatt
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Gross sedimentation of 14C labelled carbon was 58% greater in mesocosms (13 m3) containing the bivalve Mercenaria mercenaria (16 in m-2) relative to controls without this filter feeder. This difference was attributed to the activities of M. mercenaria and presumably due to filtration of particles from the water column. Of this increase, 32% and 47% were attributable to assimilation into clam tissue and respiration by the benthic community respectively. Permanent biodeposition by the clams contributed the least (21%). The ability of 8 filtration rate models to predict the increase in gross sedimentation was examined. Those …

Effect Of Fecal Pollution On Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Densities In An Estuarine Environment, W. D. Watkins, Victor J. Cabelli
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
Vibrio parahaemolyticus densities in the Narragansett Bay, R.I., estuary were found to significantly correlate with the level of fecal pollution in the water. Results of field investigations showed a definite association between the levels of this organism and those of Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, and enterococci. Densities of V. parahaemolyticus were greatest in the near-surface waters of contaminated areas and decreased sharply with both the distance from the sources of fecal pollution and the depth of the water column. A positive association with the amount of particulate matter in the water and specifically with its zooplankton content also …

Membrane Filter Method For Enumeration Of Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus From Environmental Waters, Steven J. Lacroix, Victor J. Cabelli
Membrane Filter Method For Enumeration Of Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus From Environmental Waters, Steven J. Lacroix, Victor J. Cabelli
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
A membrane filter method was developed and evaluated for the quantitative recovery of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus from environmental waters. The procedure utilized a mineral medium, with sodium acetate and potassium nitrate as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Formic acid was included to enhance the recovery of A. calcoaceticus and to inhibit background growth. The medium was incubated for 46 h at 30°C, after which fermentation and cytochrome oxidase tests were performed on the colonies as they appeared on the membrane. Background microbial growth decreased on the average by 1.77 orders of magnitude. An essentially quantitative recovery relative to that on …
Benthic Filter Feeding: A Natural Eutrophication Control, C. B. Officer, Theodore J. Smayda, R. Mann
Benthic Filter Feeding: A Natural Eutrophication Control, C. B. Officer, Theodore J. Smayda, R. Mann
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The importance of the benthic filter feeding community as a natural control on eutrophication is considered. The important environmental factors favorable for such a control are relatively shallow water depths and a dense benthic filter feeding commmunity of small animals. The criteria are summarized in the equivalence of the water recycling time, τρ, for the benthic community and the time constant, τρ, for phytoplankton growth. The criteria are applied specifically to the conditions that exist in South San Francisco bay.

The Growth And Life-History Strategy Of The Soft-Shell Clam, Mya Arenaria L., Richard S. Appeldoorn
The Growth And Life-History Strategy Of The Soft-Shell Clam, Mya Arenaria L., Richard S. Appeldoorn
Open Access Dissertations
The growth and life-history strategy of the soft-shell clam, Mya arenaria were analyzed through the exanination of 25 populations spread throughout the species' geographic range. Growth rate was determined by length-frequency analysis and was analyzed using Gallucci and Quinn's ω parameter of the von Bertalanffy equation. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to analyze environmental variability. Variations in growth were related to environmental differences. Growth varied inversely with latitude. This relationship was due mostly to temperature differences. PCA indicated that several environmental factors varied systematically with latitude. Growth was found to be negatively correlated to the siltiness of the sediment …

Environmental Impact Assessment Exploratory Techniques And Sampling Design, Henry A. Walker
Open Access Master's Theses
Statistical relationships between a set of physical and chemical variates and a vector of species abundances are explored with the objective of examining the influence of waste disposal on the benthic macrofaunal assemblages of the New York Bight Apex area. The problem of microenvironmental variability is handled by post collection stratification of samples based on the physical characteristics of each grab sample, rather than classical spatial strata definitions. Three physical variables used to define strata are: mean particle size, percent organic matter, and total concentration of heavy metals. Variations in species densities within strata over time are investigated. Multivariate discriminant …

Waste Disposal In The Waters Of The New York Bight: The Genesis Of A Dead Sea, Edward J. Linky
Waste Disposal In The Waters Of The New York Bight: The Genesis Of A Dead Sea, Edward J. Linky
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper is composed of four chapters. Chapter I will seek to delineate the scope of the paper and acquaint the reader with recent activity concerning pollution in the Bight. Chapter II will focus exclusively on scientific data gathered to date, about the effects of pollution on marine ecosystems. Chapter II will consider legal aspects of the problem, including relevant legislation, standing and other remedies which would be available to individuals or groups seeking to ultimately halt all ocean dumping in the area. Chapter IV will consist of conclusions to be drawn from this study.

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the largest single Federal agencies involved in the planning, design and construction of public waterborne transportation facilities. A critical review of a typical corps of Engineers survey report on the improvements to a harbor should provide an insight to the means of allocating the costs and benefits resulting from government expenditures. The purpose of this paper is to review this process using as a vehicle the proposed improvements to the navigation channel at New London, Connecticut
