Distinguishing Offshore Bird Hunting From Beach Scavenging In Archaeological Contexts: The Value Of Modern Beach Surveys, Kristine Bovy, Jessica E. Watson, Jane Dolliver, Julia K. Parrish

Determining whether seabirds recovered from coastal shell middens were obtained via active hunting or scavenging of beached carcasses is a challenge for archaeologists. Traditional methods have included analyzing skeletal part frequencies, abundance, age profiles, and contextual evidence. The assumption has been made, based on limited biological data, that an assemblage of carcasses scavenged from the beach will have more wing elements, and fewer legs and heads. Few studies, however, have embraced modern beaching data to verify this assumption and assess the potential faunal resources available for scavenging. We analyze the skeletal part representation of modern beached birds observed by the …

Analysis Of Human Trafficking Cases In Rhode Island, 2009-2013, Faith Skodmin, Rachel Dunham, Donna M. Hughes
Gender and Women's Studies Faculty Publications
This article is an analysis of law enforcement identified cases of human trafficking in Rhode Island from 2009 to 2013. Information was collected from police and court records, prosecutors’ press releases, and reports in the media. During this period, there was one case of forced labor of a domestic worker and six cases of domestic sex trafficking. Many of the characteristics of the Rhode Island cases were consistent with other human trafficking cases in the United States. Discussions of key findings include (a) outcomes of a criminal case using a new human trafficking statute on fraud in foreign contracting and …
Older Parents Benefit More In Health Outcome From Daughters’ Than Sons’ Care In China, Yi Zeng, Melanie Sereny Brasher, Danan Gu, James W. Vaupel
Older Parents Benefit More In Health Outcome From Daughters’ Than Sons’ Care In China, Yi Zeng, Melanie Sereny Brasher, Danan Gu, James W. Vaupel
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Objectives: To examine whether older parents in China would benefit more from daughters’ care than from sons’ care.
Methods: Analysis of the unique datasets of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey conducted in 2002, 2005 and 2008-2009 in 22 provinces.
Results: As compared to having son(s), having daughter(s) is significantly more beneficial at older ages in China, with regards to maintaining higher cognitive capacity and reducing mortality risk. Such daughter-advantages are more profound among the oldest-old aged 80+ as compared to the young-old aged 65-79, and surprisingly more profound in rural areas as compared to urban areas, even though son-preference …

Female Perceptions Of Islam In Today’S Morocco, Fatima Sadiqi
Female Perceptions Of Islam In Today’S Morocco, Fatima Sadiqi
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
This paper is based on a survey, 25 interviews, and observation. According to the results so far, Islam means three things for women in today’s Morocco: faith, culture, and politics. Islam as faith is generally perceived as a personal relationship with God. Such a relationship is seen as both rewarding and empowering, but also private. Women who perceive Islam as faith observe the Islamic rituals and may or may not wear the veil. Women’s perception of Islam as faith is a rather poorly understood topic in research in a heavily space-based patriarchy, probably because of its intimate relationship with the …

Anthropocene Anthropology: Reconceptualizing Contemporary Global Change, Amelia Moore
Anthropocene Anthropology: Reconceptualizing Contemporary Global Change, Amelia Moore
Marine Affairs Faculty Publications
The Anthropocene is the scientific label given by earth scientists to the current epoch of unprecedented anthropogenic planetary change. The Anthropocene is also a political label designed to call attention to this change and evolving notions of agency and responsibility in contemporary life. This article critically explores what I call ‘the Anthropocene idea’ and the condition of ‘Anthropocene spaces’ through selected anthropological writing about recent planetary change and through analysis of current events in a specific ‘vulnerable’ location. By considering recent events in The Bahamas, I arrive at an orientation that I call simply Anthropocene anthropology. Rather than advocating for …

There is growing interest in assessing the effects of changing environmental conditions and management actions on human wellbeing. A challenge is to translate social science expertise regarding these relationships into terms usable by environmental scientists, policymakers, and managers. Here, we present a comprehensive, structured, and transparent conceptual framework of human wellbeing designed to guide the development of indicators and a complementary social science research agenda for ecosystem-based management. Our framework grew out of an effort to develop social indicators for an integrated ecosystem assessment (IEA) of the California Current large marine ecosystem. Drawing from scholarship in international development, anthropology, geography, …
Local Ecological Knowledge Of Fishermen In Rhode Island And The Dominican Republic: State Of Their Fisheries, Changes And Adaptations, Elizabeth Layli Mclean
Local Ecological Knowledge Of Fishermen In Rhode Island And The Dominican Republic: State Of Their Fisheries, Changes And Adaptations, Elizabeth Layli Mclean
Open Access Dissertations
The failure to sustain fisheries is attributed to simultaneous effects of overfishing and to natural disturbance on fish habitats. Many conservation and management efforts are not successful in sustaining the fisheries. There is a growing need to broaden our understanding of people’s knowledge and their fisheries and to consider new approaches that will lead to effective conservation that enables us to sustain fisheries and protect the environment. This study examines the use of fishers’ local ecological knowledge (FEK) to characterize fishing communities and their practices, to assess the state of the fisheries, and the usefulness of this knowledge for conservation …
Convicts, Cargo, And Calamity: The Wreck Of The Emigrant Ship Enchantress, Abigail E. Casavant
Convicts, Cargo, And Calamity: The Wreck Of The Emigrant Ship Enchantress, Abigail E. Casavant
Open Access Master's Theses
From 2009-2015, the University of Rhode Island and St. Mary’s College of California conducted joint underwater archaeology field schools in the waters off Bermuda on a site called the Iron Plate Wreck. Aptly named for two large stacks of sheet iron, one located at the stern and one at the bow, the wreck’s identity remained a mystery. In 2013, however, historical research provided clues to the identity of the wreck, revealing it is likely the Enchantress, an early 19th century British merchant vessel with a unique past. The Enchantress not only carried cargo when it sank on February 5, …
The Art Of Removal: An Analysis Of Deaccessioning In Clothing And Textile Teaching Collections, Kristin Morgan Deitos
The Art Of Removal: An Analysis Of Deaccessioning In Clothing And Textile Teaching Collections, Kristin Morgan Deitos
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis is an analysis of deaccessioning and disposal policies and procedures in clothing and textile academic collections. As a collections management tool, deaccessioning, or the removal of an object from a collection, is a recognized part of museum stewardship. High profile controversies have increased interest in the ethics surrounding deaccessioning and disposal, yet little scholarship explores the realities of the processes in relation to ideal museum practices. Smaller museums and collections with unique missions are often left to interpret policy guidelines and literature meant for large museums. Clothing and textile teaching collections are institutions that vary in teaching mission …
Technical And Management Aspects And Socio-Cultural Perceptions Of Sea Turtle Bycatch In Ecuador, Nikita Gaibor
Technical And Management Aspects And Socio-Cultural Perceptions Of Sea Turtle Bycatch In Ecuador, Nikita Gaibor

Due to the technological improvements of the last two decades, it is possible for innovations to follow each other rapidly. However, not all innovations are useful ones, and a lot of producers often do not know how to market their new products. Diffusion theory, started by Gabriel Tarde (1903), first proposed the S-shaped diffusion curve. After this research few investigations followed until 1943. In this year Bryce Ryan and Neal Gross published their study about innovation diffusion. This led to an enormous overflow of publications. Later, Rogers (2003) contributed additional research and many others followed him.

You Are What You Eat: Investigating Food Discourse And Digitally-Mediated Identities, Katelyn Leigh Burton
You Are What You Eat: Investigating Food Discourse And Digitally-Mediated Identities, Katelyn Leigh Burton
Open Access Dissertations
My dissertation, You Are What You Eat: Understanding Food Discourse and Digitally-Mediated Identities, investigates the rhetorical nature of digital identity creation and management and the role of food discourse within these practices. According to Pierre Bourdieu (1984), “Taste classifies, and it classifies the classifier. Social subjects, classified by their classifications, distinguish themselves by the distinctions they make, between the beautiful and the ugly, the distinguished and the vulgar” (6)… and perhaps also between the delicious and the unappetizing, fast food and haute cuisine. Within this project, I use a rhetorical lens to explore digital identity constructions within the food …
“A Peculiar Power Of Perception”: Scottish Enlightenment Rhetoric And The New Aesthetic Of Language, Rosaleen Greene-Smith Keefe
“A Peculiar Power Of Perception”: Scottish Enlightenment Rhetoric And The New Aesthetic Of Language, Rosaleen Greene-Smith Keefe
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is an inquiry into the ways rhetoric, as the study of the art of language use, and literature, as the art of written language, were coherently theorized in Enlightenment Scotland to articulate the complex nature of language and its inherent relationship to the human mind and its faculties. The chapters contained in this manuscript dissertation are previously published studies in eighteenth-century Scottish rhetorical theory, examining the multiple and sometimes contradictory legacies of this important body of work on language pedagogy, philosophy of mind and language, and political theory. These studies offer new grounds for examining the legacies of …
A Photovoice Study Of The Relationships And Tensions Among The Home, Community, And School Linguistic And Social Practices Of Cambodian And Guatemalan Youth, Erin L. Papa
Open Access Dissertations
Cambodians and Guatemalans have a similar history of forced migration to the United States to escape state-supported violence, genocide, starvation, and poverty (Smith-Hefner, 1993; Menjívar, 2008), yet the U.S. Government has treated each group differently, granting refugee status to Cambodians, but forcing most Guatemalans to enter the U.S. without proper documentation (Feuerherm & Ramanathan, 2016). Although Guatemalan and Cambodian youth make up a significant portion of the Eagle City Public Schools (ECPS) population, their linguistic and social strengths and concerns often go unrecognized due to the essentializing (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001) of the two groups into the aggregate racial categories …
