Pandemic And Õen Consumption In Japan: Deliberate Buying To Aid The Seller, Kosuke Mizukoshi, Yuichiro Hidaka May 2021

Pandemic And Õen Consumption In Japan: Deliberate Buying To Aid The Seller, Kosuke Mizukoshi, Yuichiro Hidaka

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This dialogue contribution discusses whether it is possible to create favorable new social assistance under the market principles, based on the Ouen or Õen (aid) consumption in Japan. The meaning of consumption has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, aid consumption is increasing. This means helping local restaurants and producers by willfully and proactively buying and consuming their services and products. This is a favorable form of new social assistance and the result of strong marketing and market functions. The penetration of market forces may surpass pure altruistic behavior such as donations and gifts, by creating new market-linked …

Platformization Of Covid And The Rise Of Biosocial Surveillance, Handan Vicdan May 2021

Platformization Of Covid And The Rise Of Biosocial Surveillance, Handan Vicdan

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The emergence of participatory medicine and patient-generated medical research and knowledge is gaining more traction, especially with the current global health crisis. Digital platform organizations bring together diverse market actors for partnership for the creation and distribution of aggregate medical data and find cures for diseases, hence challenging the conventional medical knowledge production and disease control. In this paper, I articulate how such platformization of patient/citizen-led medical research and disease control is organized and sustained through Foucauldian notion of biopower and Rabinow’s concept of biosociality to then draw attention to what I call biosocial surveillance, which is becoming increasingly relevant …

Project Title: Home Birthing: Analyzing The Value Of Home Births To American Mothers, Julia Santini May 2021

Project Title: Home Birthing: Analyzing The Value Of Home Births To American Mothers, Julia Santini

Senior Honors Projects

There were about 3.7 million births in the United States in 2018, and a maternal mortality rate of 17.4 deaths per 100,000 live births (37.3 for non-Hispanic black women). The US also has high rates of birth interventions such as episiotomy and instrumental vaginal births, and increasing rates of cesarean sections, and while these interventions can be life saving, they do not always result in better birth outcomes. When the high US maternal mortality rates are compared to those of peer countries such as Canada and the UK, the data suggests that there is much room for improvement in how …

Bong Joon Ho, Okja (2017): Wounding The Feelings, Nagehan Uzuner Mar 2021

Bong Joon Ho, Okja (2017): Wounding The Feelings, Nagehan Uzuner

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Okja is a cute fictitious pig which is created in the laboratory as a solution for the meat industry to prevent hunger, which is one of the important problems of our contemporary century and the near future of the humanity. This pig-like, depicted as an ecological food source of the industrial society, is commodified for the mediation of the spheres within the society. Okja, as a film, falls within the intersections of food industry, feminism, orientalism, mediatization and globalization concepts. I try to understand and redefine the movie through contradictions such as East-West, women-men, good-evil. The review reexamines multiple interacting …

Hidden Sugar And Its Bitter Obstacles For The Wellbeing Of Consumers, Ai Nhan Ngo

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This research paper explores issues pertaining to, and raises awareness about, high sugar intake among consumers, which causes several consequential health risks. The paper also points out various obstacles preventing consumers from reducing their high sugar consumption. These obstacles come from policymakers, policy influencers, the sugar industry, the food industry, and consumers themselves. For some obstacles, involvement of multiple parties was found. The research also discusses several possible solutions for improving a healthy consumption environment for consumer wellbeing.

Beyond Subculture The Meaning Of Style: Chronicling Directions Of Scholarship On Dress Since Hebdige And Muggleton, Monica Sklar, Jessica Strübel, Katharine Freiberg, Sara Elhabbassi Jan 2021

Beyond Subculture The Meaning Of Style: Chronicling Directions Of Scholarship On Dress Since Hebdige And Muggleton, Monica Sklar, Jessica Strübel, Katharine Freiberg, Sara Elhabbassi

Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Faculty Publications

Youth and music-oriented subcultures use dress to embody lifestyle, ethos, individuality, and showcase their perspectives. This literature review analyzes academic writing on dress in conjunction with subculture that has emerged since Dick Hebdige wrote a defining text, Subculture: The Meaning of Style in 1979 and David Muggleton wrote a reaction book, Subculture: The Postmodern Meaning of Style in 2000. Twenty years later, at the same interval between those volumes, and using Joanne Eicher’s comprehensive definition of “dress,” this article reviews the current topics, methods, theories, and priorities. Findings indicate that academic literature on dress and subculture as joint primary variables …

The Impact Of Vertical Public Health Initiatives On Gendered Familial Care Work: Public Health And Ethical Issues, Zahra Meghani Jan 2021

The Impact Of Vertical Public Health Initiatives On Gendered Familial Care Work: Public Health And Ethical Issues, Zahra Meghani

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Rigorous evaluations of the effects of vertical public health enterprises on the health systems of low-income countries usefully identify the public health and ethical costs of those initiatives. They reveal that such narrowly focused public health ventures undermine the efforts of those countries to establish and maintain adequately resourced and well-developed national health systems, including comprehensive primary care programs. This paper argues that the scope of assessments of vertical public health ventures should be broadened to include gender as an additional axis of analysis. When members of socio-economically marginalized populations are sick with conditions that are not covered by fragmented …

Is Violence, Violence No Matter Where It Strikes? Adjudicated Boys, Thwarted Belongingness, Perceived Burdensomeness, And Acquired Capability For Suicide, Judy Van Wyk

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This study explores treating violence against others as a precursor to self-directed violence. It tests the utility of including violence against others in the measure of acquired capability to test assumptions from the interpersonal theory of violence. Four theoretical hypotheses are assessed that are consistent with the theory: (1) thwarted belongingness (parental abandonment and rejection) and perceived burdensomeness (exposure to parental interpersonal violence and child abuse) independently increase the likelihood of suicidal ideation; (2) the interaction of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness increases the likelihood of suicidal ideation controlling for other pertinent variables; (3) the three-way interaction of thwarted belongingness, …

Use Of Social-Media Networking To Facilitate A Grass-Roots Lionfish Removal Program In The British Virgin Islands, Graham E. Forrester, Kristian B. Dzilenski, David W. Gleeson Jan 2021

Use Of Social-Media Networking To Facilitate A Grass-Roots Lionfish Removal Program In The British Virgin Islands, Graham E. Forrester, Kristian B. Dzilenski, David W. Gleeson

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Volunteers are extensively involved in monitoring and controlling invasive species. Most research has examined volunteer activity in groups organized “top-down”, but we examined a local community-based group removing lionfish in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) with a specific focus on the use of social media by the group. Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois miles, P. lunulate and P. russelii) are invasive in the Western Atlantic Ocean and can impact the composition and function of coral reef communities. In response, resource managers and scientists have organized programs using divers and snorkelers to remove lionfish. In the volunteer-led BVI program, participants searched …

A Review Of Contemporary Techniques For Measuring Ergonomic Wear Comfort Of Protective And Sport Clothing, Yetanawork Teyeme, Benny Malengier, Tamrat Tesfaye, Izabela Ciesielska-Wrobel, Atiyyah Binti Haji Musa, Lieva Van Langenhove

Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Faculty Publications

Protective and sport clothing is governed by protection requirements, performance, and comfort of the user. The comfort and impact performance of protective and sport clothing are typically subjectively measured, and this is a multifactorial and dynamic process. The aim of this review paper is to review the contemporary methodologies and approaches for measuring ergonomic wear comfort, including objective and subjective techniques. Special emphasis is given to the discussion of different methods, such as objective techniques, subjective techniques, and a combination of techniques, as well as a new biomechanical approach called modeling of skin. Literature indicates that there are four main …

The Belt And Road Initiative (Bri): An Intercultural Communication Perspective., Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2021

The Belt And Road Initiative (Bri): An Intercultural Communication Perspective., Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) represents present economic and foreign policy of the People's Republic of China (PRC). However, while the BRI provides the PRC a great potential for its national development, it also causes uncertainty, anxiety, and criticism from other countries. For years, research has been examining the BRI from economic, foreign policy, political, or military perspective, very few of them explore it from the perspective of intercultural communication. Because the BRI itself is a process of intercultural communication, this paper attempts to examine it from five perspectives of intercultural communication, including cultural values, intercultural adaptation, intercultural relationship, …

Integrating The Humanities With Engineering Through A Global Case Study Course, Kirsten A. Davis, Siddhant S. Joshi, Lori Czerwionka, Francisco Montalvo, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Joe Tort, Jennifer Marston William, E. Nauman Jan 2021

Integrating The Humanities With Engineering Through A Global Case Study Course, Kirsten A. Davis, Siddhant S. Joshi, Lori Czerwionka, Francisco Montalvo, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Joe Tort, Jennifer Marston William, E. Nauman

Journal of International Engineering Education

As the world becomes more connected and globalized, the problems that engineers are called upon to solve are increasingly complex and interdependent. Unfortunately, engineering coursework has traditionally focused on abstract and closed-ended problem solving, offering few opportunities for students to develop these skills. In this practice paper, we argue for the importance of integrating the humanities and engineering to understand the multiple and intersecting layers of context in an engineering project. We then describe the Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects course, which we developed to help students acquire this perspective. The course was piloted in Spring 2021 in response to the obstacles …

Socio-Spatial Distances At The Grenfell Mission: The Louise And Edith Hegan Photograph Collection, 1909, Katherine Side Jan 2021

Socio-Spatial Distances At The Grenfell Mission: The Louise And Edith Hegan Photograph Collection, 1909, Katherine Side

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Using select photographs from a 1909 collection taken at a colonial mission in Labrador (Canada), I argue that settlers’ use of the camera and photographs intentionally created socio-spatial distances from colonial subjects. I demonstrate how cameras and photographs re-enacted colonial regimes and pictured gendered and Indigenous bodies in socio-spatial fields to enact proximity as social and physical distance and closeness. The creation of socio-spatial distances is examined through photographs that establish distance between Indigeneity and settlers and emphasize ordered social relations, including visual displays of professional status, but that challenge the superficiality of differences in dress and appearance.

Assessing Indicators And Limitations Of Food Security Objectives In Coral Reef Restoration, Jessica Vandenberg, Austin Humphries, Carlos Garcia-Quijanoa, Amelia Moore, Richard Pollnac, Suparman Abdullah Jan 2021

Assessing Indicators And Limitations Of Food Security Objectives In Coral Reef Restoration, Jessica Vandenberg, Austin Humphries, Carlos Garcia-Quijanoa, Amelia Moore, Richard Pollnac, Suparman Abdullah

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Coral reef restoration is often presented as a marine conservation solution that provides 'win-win' outcomes. However, most studies on reef restoration have focused on the biological success, while little is known about whether social objectives are ever achieved. This study investigates a reef restoration initiative in the Spermonde archipelago, Indonesia, where food security was initially presented as an intended social outcome. We utilised an ethnographic mixed-methods approach to investigate: 1) perceived sociocultural benefits of coral restoration to the local community; 2) impacts of reef restoration on local food security; and 3) local sociocultural barriers and limitations of reef restoration as …

A Marketer’S Symphony: Essays On The Power Of Musical Structure And Its Influence On Consumers With Foundations For Future Research In Audio Sensory Marketing, Shawn P. Scott

Open Access Dissertations

Music surrounds us in our daily lives and lives within us as consumers. It has the power to elicit deep emotions in us. Because of music’s power over people, marketers have used music to enhance and direct an emotional response in consumer behavior for decades. These uses of music ranged from ambient forms of music such as in restaurants, at retail, or in public open spaces to more directed forms of music such as in TV commercials or digital advertisements. Despite this expansive use of music used in marketing, this body of research has tremendous opportunity for further exploration. The …

Fantasizing Reproduction: The Biologization Of The Desire For Progress In Victorian Literature, Xinqiang Chang Jan 2021

Fantasizing Reproduction: The Biologization Of The Desire For Progress In Victorian Literature, Xinqiang Chang

Open Access Dissertations

The preoccupation with reproduction in Victorian literature has, by and large, received little critical attention. This dissertation seeks to contribute to Victorian scholarship and examines the representations of reproduction in Victorian literature in relation to the contemporaneous desire for progress. Adopting a historiographical approach, this dissertation analyzes five Victorian novels: Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, George Eliot’s Middlemarch, George Du Maurier’s Trilby, Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, and Sarah Grand’s The Heavenly Twins. In this dissertation, I demonstrate the different ways in which these Victorian novelists explored, accommodated, and concretized the Victorian desire for and pursuit …

Three Essays On Interactions Between Poverty And Natural Resources, Mattana Wongsirikajorn

Open Access Dissertations

Using natural resources sustainably while reducing poverty is one of the greatest global challenges, especially in developing countries where rural communities rely on natural resources for their livelihood. In this dissertation, I examine the interactions between poverty and natural resource depletions in the coastal communities of Tanzania. Chapter 1 explores the effects of subsidies and social nudges on collective action by resource users and whether extrinsic motivation crowd out intrinsic motivation for those actions. The results from a framed field experiment conducted in coastal communities in Tanzania reveal that while the subsidies and social nudges themselves motivate the resource users …

Student Retention: Bridging Theory, Research, Practice & Policy, Corinne M. Kulesh Jan 2021

Student Retention: Bridging Theory, Research, Practice & Policy, Corinne M. Kulesh

Open Access Dissertations

Institutions of higher education are under a lot of pressure to increase student retention. The focus on student retention supports many goals relating to student success, institutional reputation, rankings, recruitment, performance-based funding, and continued viability. Students, on the other hand, are not so concerned with being retained, but rather whether their experience makes them want to persist toward graduating with a degree at that institution. Additionally, historically-underrepresented students, such as first-generation students and students with low socioeconomic status (SES), are over-represented in the number of students who do not persist, perpetuating achievement and SES gaps. Although institutions tend to be …
