Security of food supply is one of the greatest problems that Mauritania continues to face. Fisheries development, both artisanal and industrial, has the potential of providing an increased and reliable low-cost source of animal protein and it could also help to alleviate the problems of the agricultural sector. The main focus of this paper will be upon fisheries development in Mauritania and how it may contribute to alleviating malnutrition. The Development Of Hope And Hopelessness: Structural And Functional Aspects, Anthony Scioli

Hopelessness was explored from a developmental perspective. The investigation focused primarily on the relative importance of structural vs. functional variables in determining levels of hopelessness in children and adolescents. The two secondary aims of this study were to further clarify the concept of hopelessness, and to assess the construct validity of the Hopelessness Scale for Children (HSC: Kazdin et al., 1983).

Sixty-four children and adolescents scoring either "high" or "low" on the HSC were interviewed. Thirty-two of the subjects were children, 6-10 years of age. One half of these subjects were clinically involved. The adolescent sample also consisted of thirty-two …

Assessing Beliefs About Depression And Its Treatment, Eliezer Tzvi Margolis

This dissertation is motivated by the clinical problem of determining which of two comparably effective modes of treatment (pharrnacotherapy and psychotherapy) a depressed individual would be most likely to benefit from. A cognitive variable, illness beliefs about depression, is proposed as a promising guide for making such patient-treatment mode matches.

A broad area of literature is reviewed in order to learn how beliefs about depression are and have been conceptualized, and to learn what methods, if any, have been previously used to measure them. This study examines the sociocultural aspects of fishery development in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It is based upon field research conducted through interviews with indigenous fisherfolk, business people, and expatriates. The Marshall Islands were selected because they have a limited economic base, yet have abundant fishery resources which have considerable potential to generate foreign exchange. Many studies focus on the technical aspects of fishery resource development. However, none address the sociocultural factors that influence its success. This thesis demonstrates that several aspects of Marshallese fishing society, some of which correspond to characteristics of the peasantry identified by Rogers …

CDR Hugo William Koehler (1886?-1941), a career officer in the U.S. Navy, was also a prolific writer of letters and despatches. This edited collection of his writings spans the years from 1902 to 1925.

The prologue to the collection describes Koehler’s early life – including speculation that Koehler might have been and illegitimate son of Archduke Rudolph of Austria – as well as Koehler’s education at Harvard and his training at Annapolis.

Koehler’s early naval service included a billet with the Yangtze Patrol in 1911. In 1917 he commanded a sub-chaser squadron in Ireland, where the attended Sinn Fein meetings …
