Preparation Of Fish Protein Concentrate (Fpc) From Shark, Moshin Ali Jan 1972

Preparation Of Fish Protein Concentrate (Fpc) From Shark, Moshin Ali

Open Access Master's Theses

The meat of sharks and other members of the family Elasmobranchii contains urea. Urease, present in fish muscle or released by microbes grown during storage, catalyzes the decomposition of urea to ammonia, which is responsible for off-flavor and odor in products from fish containing urea. Therefore, it is necessary to r~move urea in the preparation of FPC (fish protein concentrate) from shark meat, if the FPC is to be utilized as a highly nutritive animal protein supplement in food to combat human malnutrition in developing and underdeveloped countries.

For the production of urea-free FPC, multistage cross-current solvent extraction, multistage countercurrent …

Land Development Policy On The Local, State, And National Levels: A Case Study Of Narragansett, Rhode Island, Thomas William Fennessey Jan 1972

Land Development Policy On The Local, State, And National Levels: A Case Study Of Narragansett, Rhode Island, Thomas William Fennessey

Open Access Master's Theses

The three primary purposes of this study are: to identify and assess existing land development policies in Narragansett, Rhode Island, to determine any deficiencies in those development policies, and to suggest possible future actions to remedy those deficiencies. Since these policies are not isolated from the dynamics of a growing community, an analysis was also performed of such basic data as land use, population, and housing to predict the effect these variables would have on the town's future development. The interrelationship of these three variables with land use policy was demonstrated.

The major land use policies of the Town were …

Organization And Development Of A Computerized Drug-Drug Interaction File, Charles Daniel Mahoney Jan 1972

Organization And Development Of A Computerized Drug-Drug Interaction File, Charles Daniel Mahoney

Open Access Master's Theses

The project was designed to organize and develop a computerized drug-drug interaction file. The methodology for the organization, storage and retrieval of drug-drug interaction information is discussed. In order to accomplish this objective several requirements were met. They are as follows: (1) Selection and evaluation of clinically significant drug-drug interactions from the scientific literature, (2) Creation of a computerized data bank for drug-drug interactions, and (3) Design and development of a computerized printout which reports the information in concise summaries. The file is designed to be compatible with existing computerized record keeping and drug information systems. In addition, the retrieval …

Biological And Commercial Fisheries Related Research On The Channeled Whelk Busycon Canalculatum (Linne) In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Richard T. Sisson Jan 1972

Biological And Commercial Fisheries Related Research On The Channeled Whelk Busycon Canalculatum (Linne) In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Richard T. Sisson

Open Access Master's Theses

The three year study consisted of two phases. Phase one investigations included movement, growth, age and size determinations, and population structure of areas of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Aspects of the commercial fishery which appeared lacking in data necessary to optimize results from fishing effort were investigated in phase two. Included were market size determination, bait containers, trap designs, and seasonal catch variation by fishermen.

Movement of marked channeled whelks along the bottom of the bay was random and not correlated with other variables such as growth or month of the year. Growth of all returned tagged animals averaged 2.6 …

Brain Sensitivity To Barbiturates And Brain Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, Girish J. Patel Jan 1972

Brain Sensitivity To Barbiturates And Brain Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, Girish J. Patel

Open Access Master's Theses

The correlation between alteration in brain sensitivity to barbiturates and changes in brain gamma-aminobutyric acid levels was investigated. The following conditions were utilized to alter the brain sensitivity of mice or rats to barbiturates, 1) exposure to hypobaric hypoxia, 2) septal lesions, 3) treatment with desipramine, sodium nitrite or pargyline, 4) social deprivation, and 5) abrupt withdrawal following chronic barbiturate or ethanol administration. The first three of these conditions have been known to increase the brain sensitivity to barbiturates, while the last two conditions are known to decrease the sensitivity of brain neurons to barbiturates. The brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric …

Man's Relationship To Nature And Society In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Sherry E. Adams Jan 1972

Man's Relationship To Nature And Society In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Sherry E. Adams

Open Access Master's Theses

Nathaniel Hawthorne's treatment of man’s relationship to nature and society in The Scarlet Letter will be examined in this work. It will be necessary to examine Hawthorne's treatment of the beneficial and detrimental aspects of nature in his famous romance. In addition, a thorough study of Hawthorne's attitude toward the Puritan society will be made. Although Hawthorne deals exclusively with a community of Puritans in The Scarlet Letter, he appears to draw conclusions which would apply to any society at any time. A close analysis of each major character and his relationship to the community in which he lives and …

The Effect Of Modifiers Of Microsomal Electron Transport On Carbon Tetrachloride Hepatoxicity, Kenneth Alfred Suarez Jan 1972

The Effect Of Modifiers Of Microsomal Electron Transport On Carbon Tetrachloride Hepatoxicity, Kenneth Alfred Suarez

Open Access Dissertations

Phenobarbital pretreatment significantly enhanced the rise in SGOT and SGPT immediately following a three-hour exposure of rats to carbon tetrachloride by inhalation. However, these parameters of hepatotoxicity were significantly lower in rats pretreated with 3-methylcholanthrene when compared to rats pretreated with vehicle and exposed to carbon tetrachloride vapor. Levels of hepatic microsomal NADPH cytochrome c reductase and CO-binding pigment were elevated by phenobarbital pretreatment, but 3-methylcholanthrene had no effect on hepatic microsomal NADPH cytochrome c reductase. Although carbon tetrachloride exposure reduced CO-binding pigment content by 61 per cent in phenobarbital pretreated and by 39 per cent in 3-methylcholanthrene pretreated rats, …

Concept Of Adjacency, Kenneth L. Wright Jr. May 1971

Concept Of Adjacency, Kenneth L. Wright Jr.

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Adjacency, as used in the Law of the Sea, implies a defined area beyond the territorial sea applying to the superadjacent waters, the seabedand the subsoil. It also implies a relationship to the land. This paper is an examination of adjacency as a concept with particular emphasis placed on the possibilities of establishing the outer limits of an adjacent area. The concept of adjacency is addressed from historical, oceanographic, biological, geological and legal perspectives. An investigation into the State practice of projecting limited jurisdiction from shore into the sea by Britain and America is made to determine a possible genesis concerning …

Oceanic Disposal Of Radioactive Wastes: Effects And Proposals, Billy M. Ervin Apr 1971

Oceanic Disposal Of Radioactive Wastes: Effects And Proposals, Billy M. Ervin

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

An investigation of the effects of radioactive waste disposal into the oceans pursued by an examination of the hazards involved, the present sources of radioactive wastes and future prospects. The longevity of many radioactive elements, coupled with the awesome consequences to which even a slight miscalculation may lead, are convincing arguments for the most conservative approach to the problem of disposal of radioactive wastes. Present day disposal of radioactive wastes in the oceans, while significant, have not yet had major discernible effects on man or marine life. However, with the worldwide explosion of electrical power demand and the increasing use …
