Word Meanings In Semantic Memory: Separating, Defining And Characteristic Features, Ageliki Nicolopoulou Jan 1977

Word Meanings In Semantic Memory: Separating, Defining And Characteristic Features, Ageliki Nicolopoulou

Open Access Master's Theses

Three experiments were conducted to obtain some empirical generalizations about the structure of semantic memory. In the first experiment subjects were asked to give features for five category names as well as four instances per category. Instances varied on degree of relatedness to the category. In the second experiment subjects were asked to separate the features that they had given into (a) those that were essential for the meaning of a word (defining), and (b) those that were not absolutely necessary for the word (characteristic). In the third experiment a new set of subjects were given the same five category …

Systemic Absorption Of Topically Applied Salicylic Acid, Bruce K. Birmingham Jan 1977

Systemic Absorption Of Topically Applied Salicylic Acid, Bruce K. Birmingham

Open Access Master's Theses

Salicylic acid was applied topically to the skin of rabbits and humans in order to study the pharmacokinetics of percutaneous absorption, and the effects of formulation and application variables on the rate and extent of absorption. Drug samples incorporated into hydrophilic ointment (USP}and hydrophilic ointment containing 10% urea, were applied to the shaved abdominal areas of female New Zealand rabbits for either four or eight hours. Drug samples used for the human studies were taken up in either hydrophilic ointment or in a polyethylene glycol/water solution. Blood samples were drawn from the rabbits over a twenty-four hour period and from …

The Effect Of Caffeine On Cardiac Vulnerability To Tachyarrhythmia In The Rat, Fred A. Rotenberg Jan 1977

The Effect Of Caffeine On Cardiac Vulnerability To Tachyarrhythmia In The Rat, Fred A. Rotenberg

Open Access Master's Theses

Ventricular fibrillation is one of the primary causes of early sudden death associated with myocardial infarction (Lown et al. 1959). Although Bellet et al. 1972) have shown that caffeine infusion increases susceptibility to ventricular fibrillation in the dog, the question of the effect of daily caffeine consumption on cardiac vulnerability remains unanswered. Retrospective clinical studies examining the association of coffee consumption on heart disease cloud the long term effect of caffeine on cardiac vulnerability to arrhythmia in that they are often complicated by differences in each group's level of cigarette smoking, blood pressure, body weight, etc. In this study the …

Chaucer And The Game Of Love: An Analysis Of The Book Of The Duchess, The House Of Fame And The Parliament Of Fowles, Stephen Hyginus Murphy Jan 1977

Chaucer And The Game Of Love: An Analysis Of The Book Of The Duchess, The House Of Fame And The Parliament Of Fowles, Stephen Hyginus Murphy

Open Access Master's Theses

Examining the courtly love tradition as a viable phenomenon in Middle English literature is an extremely fascinating encounter with the pulse of fourteenth-century society. There has been a great deal of scholarly work done on both the meaning of courtly love and Chaucer's use of courtly conventions. The critics who deal with the courtly love tradition can be classified into basically four groups: (1) those who see it as a viable literary tradition; (2) those who view it as a historical fact; (3) those who say it is non-existent; and (4) those who see it as a game. The game …

Studies On The Regulation Of Prolyl Hydroxylase, Clinton Oscar Chichester Jan 1977

Studies On The Regulation Of Prolyl Hydroxylase, Clinton Oscar Chichester

Open Access Master's Theses

The hydroxylation of proline is thought to be one of the critical cellular events necessary for the synthesis and secretion of structural collagen. Using antibody directed against prolyl hydroxylase it has been shown that there is an enzymatically inactive protein related to prolyl hydroxylase in mammalian tissue. This cross-reacting protein is always present in excess relative to active hydroxylase and it is not kriown whether it is a precursor or a degradation product 0£ prolyl hydroxylase. The turnover rates of prolyl hydroxylase and immunologically related protein, CRP, were examined using labeled leucine as precursor or by measuring the decay of …

A Determination Of The Effective Surface Area Of A Subcutaneously Implanted Suspension, Peter James Blanding Jan 1977

A Determination Of The Effective Surface Area Of A Subcutaneously Implanted Suspension, Peter James Blanding

Open Access Master's Theses

The effective surf ace area of a parenteral drug in suspension, that which is exposed to body fluids at the injection site, is a major determinant of its in vivo absorption rate. Precise methods o f determining the effective surface area without disturbing the in vivo system have not been developed. A method to estimate the effective surf ace area of a subcutaneously injected suspension based on the urinary excretion of drug from solid disk implants of known surface area is presented. Standard curves for the mean surf ace area of from two to four subcutaneously implanted cylindrical disks of …

Investigations Of The Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis (Walbaum), Overwintering In The Upper Petaquamscutt River Estuary, John F. O'Brien Jan 1977

Investigations Of The Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis (Walbaum), Overwintering In The Upper Petaquamscutt River Estuary, John F. O'Brien

Open Access Master's Theses

The upper Pettaquamscutt River Estuary contains a unique overwintering population of striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum). During the winters of 1974 and 1975, experimental gillnets were used to sample this population. Catch data was examined in relaiton to abundance and distribution. Length, weight, and sex of individuals were recorded and ovaries were examined. Ichthyoplankton samples taken in the area during May and June of 1974 were examined for evidence of successful striped bass spawning.

A limited number of striped bass were gillnetted from the sample area. Nine were netted during 1974 and eleven during 1975. Ice limited sampling during the …

The Transport And Fate Of Hydrocarbons In Benthic Environments, Paul David Boehm Jan 1977

The Transport And Fate Of Hydrocarbons In Benthic Environments, Paul David Boehm

Open Access Dissertations

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sea water solubilizes certain classes of hydrocarbons (Boehm, 1973). Several chemical and biological consequences of this solubilization phenomenon were explored, Experiments on the solubility behavior of No. 2 fuel oil showed that hydrocarbons can be dispersed in water in a soluble, a solubilized (colloidal micelles), and a particulate (accommodated) state. A fractionation of hydrocarbon mixtures (e.g., fuel oil) in sea water occurs due to the differences in the solubility behavior of the various classes of hydrocarbons within the mixture.

Just as DOM promotes saturated hydrocarbon solubility, (i.e., the passage of a filter), solubilization by DOM …

Atmospheric Pathways Of The Phosphorus Cycle, William F. Graham Jan 1977

Atmospheric Pathways Of The Phosphorus Cycle, William F. Graham

Open Access Dissertations

The flow of particulate phosphorus through the atmosphere has been studied: The goal of the work was to deduce the magnitude and direction of the fluxes of phosphorus through the atmosphere and to identify the sources of this phosphorus. Samples of atmospheric particulate matter were collected at urban, rural, and remote continental sites, at remote island sites, and on ship-board over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans Samples of precipitation and. dry fallout were collected at sampling sites at Narragansett, R.I. and Bermuda. Total phosphorus was determined on both the samples of atmospheric particulate matter and the deposition samples. In addition, …

An Empirical Investigation Of An Existential Theory As It Appears To The Elderly: The Will To Live, Ann M. Varna Garis

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the Will to Live concept as it applies to the elderly. This was accomplished by exploring the relationship among the variables of Purpose in Life; Locus of Control; Depression; and a self-rating Will to Live scale. These are variables which, according to the literature, could be expected to be major components of the Will to Live concept. The subjects for this study were 63 volunteers, ranging in age from 60 to 95, taken from different housing settings, nursing homes; apartments for the elderly; and private homes in the community. In order …

Evolution Of The Us-Ussr Draft Convention On The Prohibition Of Military Or Any Other Hostile Use Of Environmental Modification Techniques: New International Environmental Law, Howard L. April

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

One cannot pick up a newspaper or news magazine at this time in early 1976 without reading about possible threats to the environment such as Concorde SST's potential impact on the ozone layer or the possibility that the fluorocarbon propellants in aerosol cans will deplete the ozone layer. In February 1976, Secretary of Transportation Coleman in announcing his decision to permit the Concorde to land at Dulles Airport outside of Washington, D.C. and at JFK Airport in New York considered that the impact of the 16 months of test flights on the stratosphere would be miniscule and the speculation of …
